Another Review of 3.18, 'Bloodline'-Faux Pause

      Email Post       3/30/2011 03:53:00 PM

"OK, this is...seriously messed up." - Alternate Charlie Francis(AKA 'Scarlie') in "Bloodline"

Some episodes of Fringe are more compelling than others, and , more messed up. And while some Fringe episodes are more messed up, they are still very much in order. Even though episode 3.18, titled, 'Bloodline' takes place Over There, it fits into that category.

'Bloodline' is not just an episode about more consequences for Fauxlivia, who just 10 episodes prior swaggered back into her own Fringe headquarters "just like nothing ever happened." It's also an episode about enlightenment and emotionality for Special Agent Lincoln Lee, about Lincoln and Scarlie recognizing the synchronicity of FauxLivia's return and AltBroyles' disappearance, and about who is further off the deep end-Walternate, or our Walter? It's also an episode about the relationship between FauxLivia and her mother, Marilyn, and about just how concerned our favorite alt cab driver, Henry, has been about our favorite blond FBI agent.

Fringe Discuss: What will FauxLivia Name Her Baby Boy?

      Email Post       3/30/2011 08:00:00 AM

Welcome to another Wednesday, Fringe fans, and that means it's time for another round of Fringe Discuss.

Well, FauxLivia just delivered a son, fathered by Peter Bishop. She's admitted that she hasn't thought of anything beyond whether or not she could carry a baby to term, yet in the last scene of "Bloodline" he's bundled in her arms.

So this week's question is: What do you think FauxLivia will name her baby boy?

I would love to hear what all of you think about this so please post your comments and opinions below! Please feel free to post any wild ideas you have but PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY SPOILERS!

And since this is a very open-ended discussion question, this week's poll is about which couple you would like to see (other than Peter & Olivia). Update: I've changed to poll to allow multiple selections.

Which couples would you like to see on Fringe?

Fringe's Future: Walternate's Plan, Olivia as Bell, More With the show officially renewed, what can we expect heading towards the season finale? US, March 29, 2011 by Eric Goldman

On Friday, I posted Part 1 of my chat with Fringe showrunners Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman, who I spoke to shortly after the great news came out that the series was renewed for Season 4. Where the first part of our conversation was more specifically about the renewal and the factors that go into analyzing TV viewership these days, this second part is more about the show's current storylines. Read on for some hints at what's to come, in the wake of this past Friday's "Bloodline" episode.

We pick up with the three of us in the midst of discussing Anna Torv and all she's been asked to do on the show of late.
Wyman: Look at what she did with [William] Bell! It's astounding. And we've got to tell you, that's all her. She interpreted that character the way it was and for us, in our wildest dreams… It's just transcended all our expectations.

IGN: It's such a fun, interesting choice. When you decided Olivia would be taken over by William Bell, did you tell Anna at all, "We'd like you to act like Leonard Nimoy," or was it not quite that specific?

'Fringe' renewed: Can fan passion trump ratings? By Henry Hanks, CNN March 28, 2011 6:15 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Not so long ago, TV shows like "Firefly," "Wonderfalls," "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and "Dollhouse" were mourned by science fiction fans as having been canceled before their time, due -- as it always is -- to low ratings.

Another thing each had in common: They aired on Fox on Friday nights.

So observers of the TV world were surprised Thursday to learn of the network's renewal of the series "Fringe" for a full fourth season after two months in a Friday timeslot.

Adding to the surprise: It was picked up in March, much earlier than many other shows with "on the bubble" status -- an equal chance of cancellation or renewal -- would traditionally find out their fates. (One week earlier, NBC renewed two of its "on the bubble" series with a passionate fanbase: "Community" and "Parks and Recreation.")

Fans and many TV critics feared that the show's cancellation was imminent when it was moved from a Thursday slot to Friday. Despite encouraging words from Fox, fans rallied support for the show on social media, and star Joshua Jackson even got involved, reminding the "Fringe" faithful not to rest on their laurels.

The show's ratings started out on par with what they were on Thursday but then started to drop, eventually hitting a series low six days before it was renewed, which begs the question: Did fan support and other factors count for more than the show's raw viewership?

Fox's news release announcing the pick-up of the show, about a war between an alternate universe and our own, certainly gave the fans plenty of credit.
"The series' ingenious producers, amazingly talented cast and crew, as well as some of the most passionate and loyal fans on the planet, made this fourth-season pickup possible," said the network's entertainment president, Kevin Reilly.

"Ultimately, I think Fox is making a decision not based purely on ratings but based on (fan) commitment and dedication," said Jovana Grbic, editor and creative director of ScriptPhD.com, who is contributing a chapter to an upcoming book examining the science behind the series. "This is an unprecedented level of support for a show with a small but dedicated fanbase, something that sci-fi in particular has had a very difficult time attaining on network television."

Dennis Acevedo, creator of FringeTelevision.com, attributes it to DVR viewing, especially considering its current timeslot. "It consistently ranks as one of the highest shows in DVR viewing," he said. "And people who like it really like it."

Acevedo quoted a recent interview on TheDailyBeast.com in which Executive Producer Joel Wyman said, "Not everybody likes licorice, but people who like licorice really like licorice. We're happy being that."

But is being "licorice" really all it takes to make a show successful today?

" 'Fringe's' ratings looked very decent for a Friday," said Robert Seidman, who follows TV viewership very closely as co-founder of TVBytheNumbers.com and found the renewal's timing "a little odd."

"The ratings that matter most are ones nobody sees, the 'C3' rating that measure commercial viewing live plus three days of DVR viewing," he said. "All that DVR viewing is great for Fox's PR department, but it doesn't add much extra advertising revenue."

Indeed, the anonymous Twitter user who claims to work for Fox, known as the Masked Scheduler, recently tweeted about an improvement in "Fringe's" ratings the night after its renewal: "Supporting shows by viewing live helps more than u know."

Another possible factor: Science fiction shows typically bring in audiences with higher household incomes. "Seeing that kind of data was what got me interested in doing the website to begin with," Seidman said. "However, that data does not flow freely at all."

So, despite the advent of DVRs and full episodes streaming online, have there been any other major changes since the days of "Firefly" that would add more weight to the passion of a show's fanbase?

"There are now more people watching cable instead of broadcast. The broadcast ratings are lower now than they were when 'Firefly' was on," Seidman said, meaning that some shows do, in fact, stay on the air with ratings that might have gotten them canceled in years past.

As for whether fan efforts can consistently make the difference between cancellation and renewal -- in the way it seemed for shows like "Chuck" and "Jericho" in the past -- Seidman said, "It can't hurt, but I'm not really sold on that. I am sold to some degree: Fans' passion about a show does register with the networks. But I don't think that's enough to save a show if the ratings aren't any good."

No matter the reason, fans understand just how fortunate they are to have the show last this long.

"As a sci-fi fan, expert and writer, the renewal and network backing pleases me because it sends a message to writers and developers of future science fiction television that there is a place for intricate, intelligent shows with a multilayered plot on network television, that the risks are worth taking, and that networks are beginning to recognize the value of the niche as a fan base," Grbic said.

"I think Fringe is just a really unique situation. It's been this experimental show at Fox since the beginning," Acevedo said. "And so far, it's gotten through everything thrown at it."

Connections: Cosmic & Cabbie

Quickly now – just finished a Snoopy Happy Dance Marathon upon the news that not only has FOX renewed Fringe for a fourth season but also for a full twenty-two episode order! WooT!

Congrats to the cast and crew!

Bloodline has to be one of the most layered episodes of Fringe. There is so much going on below the surface here that it would take a major thesis to cover them all.

Fauxlivia Encounters A Buddha In The Road!

Fringe is very much a show of 'why.' The other elements of story telling; how, who, what, where, and when are given to us, in that trademark Fringian Freaky Format that shows the viewer the story in either the most graphic or dramatic way possible. Or with the two mixed together if the occasion calls for it. Often those mechanics are used to manipulate the viewer's thoughts one way while the real 'why' of those scenes is often more complicated than expected. Bloodline is a text book case.

“Nothing is set in stone.”

It would be easy to dismiss this episode as nothing more than “advancing the plot,” whatever that utterly meaningless phrase means. To do so, however, would be to ignore the lovely character moments, structural risks, and tantalizing hints of “Bloodline.”

FRINGE: ‘Bloodline’ Teases, Plus EPs Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman Talk Peter’s Choice and the Other Universe
March 25, 2011 by Marisa Roffman

FRINGE fans, tonight’s hour is a big one.

Originally, I had planned on answering some fan questions about the episode, but as I watched what went down, I quickly realized there was no way to do that without potentially spoiling too much. And you know what? I don’t want to spoil you guys. This show is too darn good to have the twists and turns — and there are quite a few — spoiled.

However, I am willing to tease a few things about “Bloodline”…

- Tonight’s hour is set solely “over there.”

- Last month, FRINGE executive producer J.H. Wyman teased, “An insight about this is that this isn’t going to be a normal pregnancy [for Fauxlivia] that you see, either. And the pregnancy is [going to evolve] in a FRINGE way that you don’t comprehend yet. It’s not going to be your traditional love triangle, ‘I’m pregnant and having a baby’ story. It’s going to be FRINGE-ified.” Fans will learn a lot more about what he meant in “Bloodline.”

- If you don’t love Lincoln after tonight’s episode…well, I’m not even sure what to say to you.

- Two characters are in legitimate life-or-death danger.

Okay, so those were semi-vague teases. But trust me, you don’t want this hour spoiled. The good news? We’ll be able to discuss “Bloodline” the moment the episode finishes on the east coast, so make sure to check back with Give Me My Remote at 10:01 PM so we can talk about what went down.

The better news? I have some more of my interview with FRINGE executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman that seemed rather appropriate to post now, given yesterday’s season four pickup (yay!) and tonight’s new episode…

Anna Torv Fringe (Friday, 9/8c, Fox)
This entire season has been a tour de force for Anna Torv. Doing double duty as dueling Olivias from parallel warring universes, she most recently spent an episode channeling her inner Spock — aka Leonard Nimoy — as the ghostly soul of William Bell inhabited her body for a very clever outing. (In the climax, the dormant Olivia resurfaced briefly, freaking out Peter and the viewing audience.) This week, we're back in alt-world, as the pregnant Alt-livia faces mortal danger from several fronts. It's a very harrowing hour, deserving a far larger audience than it's likely to get, tucked away on Fridays. Fox, stand by this show!

Fringe Discuss: How Will Season 3 End?

      Email Post       3/23/2011 11:08:00 AM

Welcome to another Wednesday, Fringe fans, and that means it's time for another round of Fringe Discuss.

We recently learned the titles of episodes 321 and 322, and they have created quite the buzz.

Episode 321 is titled "The Last Sam Weiss," and episode 322 is titled "The Day We Died."

So this week's discussion question is:

What do you think is going to happen in the last two episodes of Season 3, based on the just-released episode titles?

I would LOVE to hear everyone's take on this, so please comment below. Feel free to post any wild theories or educated guesses you might have, but NO ACTUAL SPOILERS.

Please remember that everyone has a right to their opinion no matter how far 'out there' it is (remember we're talking about Fringe here!).

And since this is a very open-ended question, this week's poll will be on the upcoming episode "Bloodline". Who is your favorite character from "Over There"? I have purposely left out Peter, although technically he is "The Man From The Other Side", and I also left out Colonel Broyles since he was killed in "Entrada".

Who is your favorite Red-Universe character?

Fringe Exclusive: Remaining Schedule For Season 3

      Email Post       3/22/2011 03:00:00 PM

We just got word from FOX on the schedule for the remaining season 3 episodes of Fringe.

First the bad news: After this week's 'over-there' episode "Bloodline", there will be two weeks of reruns.

Hmmm. Seems like it would have made more sense to show reruns when you were up against the NCAA playoffs...

It also means we don't get a new episode on April 1st. :(

The good news is, once Fringe returns with new episodes on April 15, we will run the last four episodes of the season straight through to the season finale on May 6th.

Here is the remaining schedule:

3/25 - Bloodline (#318)
4/01 - The Firefly (#310 repeat)
4/08 - Reciprocity (#311 repeat)
4/15 - Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (#319)*
4/22 - 6:02 AM EST (#320) ***
4/29 - The Last Sam Weiss (#321) **
5/06 - The Day We Died (#322 Season Finale!) **

* According to SpoilerTV
** According to TV Line
** According to J.H. Wyman

These dates have been added to the FringeTelevision Google calendar.

UPDATE: According to The Futon Critic, Fringe will continue to air repeats all summer in the "Saturday Night Fringe" timeslot, Saturdays at 11:00PM.

The Theme of the Week is fate. The question of the week is trickier—how much fate happens despite (or because of) our heroes’ actions, and how much does William Bell make happen? Is he really the focus of all this synchronicity?

The Sprint "Fringe Now" page of the Fox website has a new "Alternate Universe Article", which shows a news article from the Red universe, on one of those ubiquitous Motorola XOOM type devices.

The article is titled "Megaseas - Air pressure was compromised by unknown sources.":
Early this morning on Megaseas' weekly luxury tour of the submerged Island of Oahu, air pressure was compromised by unknown causes. The submarine had to make an emergency surfacing and all passengers were evacuated. This is the first time since 1978 that the famous two-day voyage had to suspend operations mid-tour..

First of all, the "Submerged Island of Oahu"? We know from the transcript of the Fringe episode Jacksonville, that people still live in Hawaii, so the whole state isn't missing. According to the alternate universe map of the US, half of California is also missing. Global warming, or giant quake?

Also, what caused the emergency in 1978? Did it have anything to do with Peter being born the same year?

Fringe Ratings & March Madness

The ratings for Fringe have been holding steady. Even after a one-week break, "Os" kept up the 1.5 rating steak alive.

Tonight however, Fringe faces new competition in the form of college basketball - specifically the second day of the second round of the NCAA Div 1 Championship Tournament, aka March Madness.Normally, networks show reruns during popular sporting events like this, but there were plenty of new episodes yesterday, and Fringe will be new tonight.

There are four games that start around 7:00 and could overlap the start of Fringe: Kansas vs. Boston U., North Carolina vs. Longsland, Purdue vs. St. Peter’s, Xavier vs. Marquette, and four other games that could start after those games end: UNL vs. Illinois, Washington vs. Georgia, Georgetown vs. VCU, Syracuse vs. Indiana St.

If you don't care about sports, or college basketball in particular, then carry on watching Fringe LIVE tonight! If you are watching the games, but also want to watch Fringe, the easiest solution, if you have a DVR, would be to watch the early game, watch Fringe when that ends (possibly even live), then watch the late game on delay. However, I know some sports fans will only watch games live. How are you going to handle this?

Are you watching Fringe or March Madness?

TVLine Exclusive: Anna Torv Shares Her Take On a Very Spocking Twist

      Email Post       3/18/2011 01:06:00 PM

TV Line has an exclusive interview with Anna Torv where she discusses the difficulty of playing a William Bell-inhabited Olivia:
Anna Torv herself was agog when she first learned of the twist – one that forced into her repertoire a third Fringe characterization. “This is not one I had been asking for!” the actress admits with a laugh. “I was in shock for the first day, and then I think I hyperventilated, and then I called John Noble to say, ‘Can you please help me?’”

Torv’s reasons for turning to Walter’s portrayer were twofold. “When you are about to do something you’re kind of freaked out about, you want to be able to look up and know there’s a safe place to go to – and it’s there in John’s eyes,” she explains. And because Noble was in most of Leonard Nimoy’s scenes as “Belly,” Torv says, “I wanted to know what that relationship was like.”

Because she is Australian and already affecting an American accent for her portrayal of Olivia/”Bolivia,” Torv studied tapes of Nimoy’s Fringe work as well as consulted with the show’s dialect coach. Ultimately, though, she had to just jump in with both feet. “I’m no good at doing voices, mimicking people, so once I realized, ‘S—t, I can’t do this,’ you just take a deep breath and go for it.”

Bell’s most unexpected and equally unorthodox “return” promises to have a significant impact on the “machine” storyline that has Peter fretting over his fate as well as that of this universe. As Torv notes, the late genius “has a lot of information that we don’t have, so he’s an awesome resource for the team. And for Walter to have someone to work with is another [advantage].” Or could it be a liability…?
She also touches on the topic of Peter:
And as one might imagine, Olivia’s “possession” puts a pin in her nascent romance with Peter. “Well, yeah,” Torv confirms with a laugh. “I don’t think Peter is going to want to go to bed with William Bell!”

In other words, it’s business as usual for that oft-interrupted relationship. “Every time they sort of get it together,” Torv says, “something gets in the way.”
Torv also discusses the introduction of the Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) in the Blue universe, and how she will handle future twists. You can read the rest of the article at TVLine.com.

'Fringe' execs 'positive about renewal'

Jeff Pinkner Joel Wyman Fringe

The executive producers of Fringe have claimed that they are feeling positive about the show's chances of renewal.

Jeff Pinkner told The Daily Beast that Fox continues to support the sci-fi drama, despite moving it to an unpopular Friday night slot.

"Creatively, Fox has been unbelievably supportive," he insisted. "We have exceeded their expectations on Friday nights."

He added: "Having said that, who knows what the future brings? But, all the signs we're getting are incredibly positive… that we have several seasons of storytelling left."

Co-producer Joel Wyman also suggested that he and Pinkner had never expected Fringe to appeal to a mass audience.

"We knew when we set out that this would not be a massive, popular appeal show, because it's a show that requires you to sit forward and not sit back while you're watching," he suggested. "It's a show that demands attention and thought and rewards it."

The pair previously admitted that they are unconcerned about the show's ratings. The most recent episode attracted 3.76m viewers on Friday night.

Fringe continues on Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

Fringe Sneak Peek #2 317: "Stowaway"

      Email Post       3/17/2011 03:52:00 PM

Thanks to TVline.com, here is a new sneak peek for tomorrow's episode "Stowaway".

Plus, Anna Torv gave them her opinion about her "new" role:
The actress — who has already been tasked this season with juggling the dual roles of Olivia and Fauxlivia — recently admitted to TVLine’s Matt Mitovich that adding a third personality to her repertoire “was not [a challenge] that I had been asking for!”

The fact that the new role involved channeling a sci-fi legend by the name of Leonard Nimoy made it all the more intimidating. “I was in shock for the first day,” Torv confesses. “I think I hyperventilated — and then I called John Noble [Walter] to say, ‘Can you please help me?’ I wanted to know what he thought, and what that [Walter/William] relationship was like. Plus, John is such a sweetheart, a lovely person to ask.”

Fringe Easter Egg Roundup for "Os"

      Email Post       3/17/2011 03:10:00 AM

Here are some recurring "Easter egg" screen shots from the Fringe episode "Os":

The Observer can be spotted near the Massachusetts Metal Depository, observing the crime scene amongst the crowd. You can see him clearly walking up to the scene (with umbrella!) in this promotional photo.

Hidden Glyphs: I did not see any hidden glyphs in this episode. If you find any in the "Os" screenshots, let  us know!

Next Episode Clue: The Fringe episode "Subject 13" contained two posters of the periodic table of elements, the standard Mendeleev model, and the much newer Circular model (we won't mention the fact that both versions are too modern for 1985...). In either poster, you can see the symbol for Osmium - "Os", the titular element of the episode:
KRICK: I work in aeronautics. A few months ago, I was contracted to develop a new alloy for military aircraft-- A metal dense enough to keep pilots safe from ground fire, but still allow for flight. I wasn't having much success. And then I combined two elements. Rare elements.
WALTER: Osmium and lutetium.
KRICK: And that's when it happened. I'd combined two of the densest elements on earth, and somehow the result was a new molecule... A molecule lighter than air.

Fringe Discuss: Olivia Dunham Possesed By William Bell

      Email Post       3/16/2011 10:08:00 AM

Welcome to Wednesday, Fringe fans. It's time for our second installment of Fringe Discuss, where we take a look at one hot topic and have you weigh in on your thoughts.

This week's discussion topic:

Olivia Dunham is apparently now possesed by William Bell's conciousness. How do you feel about that? Is it a fun thing, or a bad thing? Is it consistent with things in this series, or too far out there?

There are some fans who have recently verbalized on the internet that they are upset by this development, and yet other fans think it's fun.

Please share your thoughts on this, and remember, it's healthy in Fringe to disagree.

Just be considerate of your fellow fans and please keep your language civil.

How do you feel about the "Soul Magnet" story line?

Episode Review-'Os'

      Email Post       3/16/2011 09:15:00 AM

"What if I fail?"
"You won't fail, Walter."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because you can't."

This is a bridging episode between where Fringe was and where it's heading, and the stakes have never been higher for our favorite mad scientist, Walter Bishop.

Like many in the series so far this is mainly a relationship episode, mostly about that bittersweet relationship that can exist between a father and son.

I always loved Greek mythology as a kid, so in the fourth scene, Walter's immediate reference to Icarus' flying to close to the sun and falling to the earth made me smile. It also made me alert. It wasn't just the famous Daedalus and Icarus father and son story we were talking about here, but most likely the foreshadowing of another father losing a son.(Yikes!)In a quick recap, Daedalus the designing father and his son, Icarus, were trapped in a labyrinth on the island of Crete by an evil king(long story). Daedalus came up with the idea of crafting a set of wings out of feathers and wax with which he and his son could escape. Before they did, Daedalus warned Icarus not to get too close to the ocean lest his wings get wet and malfunction, and not to get too close to the sun, lest the wax of his wings melt and he fall into the sea. Unfortunately, Icarus got carried away by the magnificence of flight and flew too close to the sun. The wax holding his wings together melted, and Icarus plummeted into the sea and drowned. There's no hard proof yet but I can't shake the feeling that this is foreshadowing of the fate of Peter Bishop sometime in the future of the series, not exactly in the manner of this myth, but similarly none the less.

Fringe Now: Alternate Universe Articles - Darpa

      Email Post       3/14/2011 01:15:00 AM

The Sprint "Fringe Now" page of the Fox website has a new "Alternate Universe Article", which shows a news article from the Red universe, on one of those ubiquitous Motorola XOOM type devices.

The article is titled "DARPA - The agency is offering a reward for any information leading to the cloak's recovery.":
DARPA again requests help from all citizens. Any information regarding the misplaced experimental invisibility cloak should be directed to the Department of Defense citizen's hotline. The agency is offering a reward for any information leading to the cloak's recovery.
DARPA stands for the "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency", which is a real agency in this universe that is responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. It looks like in the Red-verse, they had already developed an invisibility cloak, while it is still in the research stages here in the Blue-verse.

For more information on DARPA, visit DARPA.mil.

Fringe Review: Os

      Email Post       3/12/2011 03:51:00 PM

“It’s about trust. So it’s a great game, if two people are playing.”

For the past five episodes or so, I’ve had the same thought after each airing: How many viewers will call this the last straw, the final push, the reason to rant and rave and, ultimately, walk away? Fringe continues to push us past our comfort zone, not just in terms of scientific possibilities but also in the intersection between the personal and the scientific, with interesting results.
