TVLine Exclusive: Anna Torv Shares Her Take On a Very Spocking Twist

      Email Post       3/18/2011 01:06:00 PM

TV Line has an exclusive interview with Anna Torv where she discusses the difficulty of playing a William Bell-inhabited Olivia:
Anna Torv herself was agog when she first learned of the twist – one that forced into her repertoire a third Fringe characterization. “This is not one I had been asking for!” the actress admits with a laugh. “I was in shock for the first day, and then I think I hyperventilated, and then I called John Noble to say, ‘Can you please help me?’”

Torv’s reasons for turning to Walter’s portrayer were twofold. “When you are about to do something you’re kind of freaked out about, you want to be able to look up and know there’s a safe place to go to – and it’s there in John’s eyes,” she explains. And because Noble was in most of Leonard Nimoy’s scenes as “Belly,” Torv says, “I wanted to know what that relationship was like.”

Because she is Australian and already affecting an American accent for her portrayal of Olivia/”Bolivia,” Torv studied tapes of Nimoy’s Fringe work as well as consulted with the show’s dialect coach. Ultimately, though, she had to just jump in with both feet. “I’m no good at doing voices, mimicking people, so once I realized, ‘S—t, I can’t do this,’ you just take a deep breath and go for it.”

Bell’s most unexpected and equally unorthodox “return” promises to have a significant impact on the “machine” storyline that has Peter fretting over his fate as well as that of this universe. As Torv notes, the late genius “has a lot of information that we don’t have, so he’s an awesome resource for the team. And for Walter to have someone to work with is another [advantage].” Or could it be a liability…?
She also touches on the topic of Peter:
And as one might imagine, Olivia’s “possession” puts a pin in her nascent romance with Peter. “Well, yeah,” Torv confirms with a laugh. “I don’t think Peter is going to want to go to bed with William Bell!”

In other words, it’s business as usual for that oft-interrupted relationship. “Every time they sort of get it together,” Torv says, “something gets in the way.”
Torv also discusses the introduction of the Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) in the Blue universe, and how she will handle future twists. You can read the rest of the article at

That's really strange thing to say 45.

Because , i was thinking that your love for josh which driving you not the hate of Anna , ... the one who is loving someone or who ever .. can not hate any one else i think . now we are talking about real persons not a character in a show .

after all , no one can deny how amazing Anna in acting and even if she will do more characters in this show .. it's not going to surprise us , because she is a miracle actress and has the ability to do what ever IMO .

It's nice to see how the actors/actress are taking their roles and how they are working very hard to revive the black and white which the writers wrote .

The best part for Peter was when he with his father at the lab working for science , not at field , because he is not an FBI agent and he was helping the FBI as a civilian consultant but not a agent , I wish that he will remain as that , Peter's character is very sensible and we are waiting more from him .. but first we would like to trust him more .

See , no hate no dislike .. the opposite our love for him which drive us to criticize him .

Peace 45 .

I have no idea, what 45 has said, so I don't know, what you're talking about Real1, but you said something that bothers me, namely the role you want for Peter.

While I agree, that he's not an FBI agent, Peter is not a character, that can be confined to a lab for long. The producers described him as a man, who can do anything and everything, because of his genius intellect and because of his nomadic life, before he joined the FBI as a consultant. That's why he has a wide range of abilities, that come to the fore, when necessary.

Don't get me wrong, I do agree, that his relationship with Walter is by far the best in the show. I would have preferred, that they focused on this relationship and that Peter had found a beautiful and wonderful woman for himself. However, the writers decided to hook him up with Olivia and to have him as his partner, so they are just using one of his talents for now. Maybe in the future, he'll be more often in the lab. I hope so, because scientists are hot and his little secret lab was one of the best things for me this season.

I think Anna Torv is amazing. It's awesome when shows really stretch their actors--makes it more interesting for us as fans. I especially love that she went to John Noble for advice. He's wonderful and has been for ages. What a great opportunity for younger actors like Anna and Josh to learn!

I'd like to invite any and all readers here to check out our Fringe WatchParty tonight! We're a new startup Website that lets fans watch their favorite show together. We are just starting up with Fringe and I'd really like to let everyone see how dedicated Fringe fans are! Thanks, and I hope to see you there!

To Anon :

From "Pilot"

Olivia : His name is Peter Bishop. He's a high-school drop-out, IQ at 190, just 50 points north of genius. Misfit, nomad. Hasn't kept a job longer than two months. He's been a wild land fireman, cargo pilot and briefly a college chemistry professor. He falsified a degree from MIT. He even managed to get a few papers published before he was found out. Sounds like a massive pain in the ass.

From "The Same Old Story"

NINA: Yes, Peter Bishop, whose history of questionable business practices verge on fraud, yet you propose giving him access to information that, if made public, would cause mass panic.

From "Olivia. In The Lab. With The Revolver."

PETER: Right. You know, this past year, this is the longest I've ever stayed in one place. So this thing that we have, you, me, Walter, this... this... uh, little family unit that we've got going... I don't want to do anything to jeopardize that.

So , don't get me wrong either , I care about Peter's character too , but still he is just as a lost man .... and i truly liking him with Walter at the lab but not at the field , I don't know it's just my point to view and how i did take his character but Peter s3 .. is different for me .

Sorry to bother you ...I didn't mean to bother any one , but maybe i have a different thinking that's all :)

and for 45 ... just forget about what she/he said .
and you are welcome :)

Thanks for clarifying, Real1. I also stated my preferences, basically agreeing with you, but I think that Peter should have been a free agent, not working with Olivia or Walter, except occasionally. He doesn't belong in a lab either, because he has always looked for action, even though not always legal.

However, they had to make him Olivia's partner, because otherwise there would be no love story between Peter and Olivia. She doesn't fall in love with men, that aren't her work partners.

Commenting on Anna Torv said, of course, there will be obstacles. It's a TV show and that's a rule.

And I have to comment on the picture Dennis included with this post: There's our "Alice" looking through the looking glass, a woman who previously had a cup of tea(probably spiked with "soul magnets") with Dr. Bell, the "Mad Hatter" in this tale, and now the effects of said tea are effecting her.

You are very cute Anon :)

I think that Olivia falls to Peter since the mid of S1 and while he is not her partner .. Charli was . The love story was there and not necessary to be by partner thingi IMO .

You can find in s1 and s2 how Peter was caring about Olivia and how Olivia was caring about him and Walter but she is afraid from start any thing .. and Peter was step by step approaching to her .

I love them together :) i can't deny that .
