Fringe Review 301: Olivia

      Email Post       9/30/2010 02:54:00 AM

“You can’t just keep running.”

The Season Two finale left us with Peter and Walter back Over Here, accompanied by a woman alternately called Boliva, Oliviate, or Fauxlivia. Our Olivia (now with auburn hair) is stuck Over There as a pawn in Walternate game/war/vendetta. This episode’s focus on Over There, and on Olivia’s experiences, was exactly as creepy, disorienting, and disturbing as it should have been.

Five reasons we love Fringe's alternate universe

      Email Post       9/29/2010 07:48:00 AM

by Samuel Roberts

Season three of Fringe returns in just over a week – Eric Stoltz in Back To The Future, anyone?
With Fringe’s third season beginning on 23 September in the United States, we felt compelled to remind you why the series’ alternate universe – which will be featured bi-weekly in the first half of the season – is such an interesting contrast to our own:

1. I’m seeing double!

There’s something extremely fun about the fact that several of the characters have doubles, most notably B-Olivia and Walternate, while Charlie lingers on in the alternative universe. Mainly, though, I just enjoyed this daft – but, undeniably cool – showdown between our Olivia Dunham and her sassier, fringe-bearing alternate:

2. The historical differences

JFK is still alive? Nixon’s head is on coins? The White House was destroyed, but the World Trade Center still stands? Every time a single one of these details was mentioned in the latter half of Fringe’s second season, I couldn’t help but get a little more invested in the story. Hopefully, the producers will have more of these ideas in store for us when the third season begins.

3. Movie titles

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I kind of want to see Superman Vs Batman and Indiana Jones And The Hex Of The Hydra, both of which are currently in theatres in the Fringe universe. This altogether neat touch is exactly why Fringe’s alternate universe is so cool – it works on multiple levels, from characterisation to the pop culture references.

4. The New York skyline

Zeppelins over New York in 2010? Love it. Fringe’s art direction went crazy in the second season, painting a picture of what an alternate universe should look like – close-to-home, but creatively inspired. I can’t wait to get a further glance at it over the course of the third year.

5. Fringe division is an army

Vans? They have Fringe vans? Broyles has a control room? Bloody hell! Fringe seems to have far more backing from the government on the other side, due to the fact that the entire world is falling apart over there (a result of Walter Bishop’s amoral dabbling with the universe). As a result, the division probably has its own stationery, and they’re obviously well known by the public.

Joshua Jackson Talks Olivia, Peter, and daddy issues plus induldges our inner 'Dawson's Creek' geek

      Email Post       9/25/2010 12:37:00 PM

By Carina Adly MacKenzie

September 23, 2010 11:26 AM ET
We have a confession to make.

We love "Fringe's" Joshua Jackson. From "The Mighty Ducks" to that awful werewolf movie, our admiration has never faltered.

When Zap2it was invited on an exclusive visit to the "Fringe" set, we had no choice but to admit to Jackson that we still crack open our "Dawson's Creek" DVDs on an embarrassingly regular basis.

"Well, I apologize for the fifth season, but other than that, I think we're okay," he teases. We also had to ask him about his recent adventures at Pacey Con, the all-Pacey all the time alternative to Comic Con -- and we teased him a little bit about his unique creek wardrobe.

Once we got our fill of Capeside nostalgia, we jumped right into the "Fringe" universe. The show's September 23 premiere (on FOX at 9 p.m.) is aptly titled "Olivia."

"Season 3 so far has been the season of Olivia," says Jackson, who was working on Episode 5 at the time of the interview. "We have almost what amounts to two shows. We have the over there side, as they're dealing with their version of the Fringe incidents, and the over here side, where we're dealing with ours. I don't write the show, but I know there's inevitably going to be a crunch as we sort of figure out the Olivia question."

Because of the focus on Olivia (Anna Torv) and her alternate, Jackson has found himself with a little bit more time on his hands. "I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm probably the last man smiling on set. It's Friday, I've got two hours of work today, so while I don't get the cool thing of playing two versions of my own character, I do get the even cooler thing of doing eight days of Fringe and eight days off."

Though he's enjoyed spending time with girlfriend Diane Krueger -- and some of his high school buddies, since Vancouver is his hometown -- it doesn't mean Jackson hasn't put some thought into who Peter might have been in an alternate universe.

"I'd like him to be a healthy upstanding citizen," Joshua jokes. "I think if we did the alternate Peter what would've been cool would've been to do the version where the illness sort of crippled him, and instead of being the guy who ran away outside, he would've run away inside. He would sort of be the boy in the bubble. But we'll never know!"

As many fans would agree, Jackson's favorite part of the show is the interaction between Peter and Walter (John Noble). "As if one set of parents wasn't enough of a pain in the a**," he laughs. "We haven't really gotten into it yet, but I'm hoping we get into it heavily, because for me, that's the most interesting stuff that I get to do here. All the Sci-Fi is, fun but it's just big and out there. At the center of it all you have this kick-a** heroine, you know, this woman against all odds, who just is always driving, driving, driving. And then the backdrop to her investigations is this father son dynamic, which is unusual to put into a science fiction show."

Jackson has plenty to say about Peter and Olivia's love life, but he says he finds the ever-evolving relationship between Peter and Walter to be the most interesting part of the show. "It's just a ton of fun to me. There's an infinite amount of stuff to play, John Noble is phenomenal, and I got all of my romantic angsty bulls*** out of the way years ago."

Hey now. We liked that romantic angsty stuff, Pacey Witter.

"Some of it was bulls***," Jackson teases good-naturedly. "But it was glorious bulls***."

We'll take it.

Why You Should Be Watching the Doubly Delicious 'Fringe'

      Email Post       9/24/2010 09:42:00 PM

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 23rd 2010 3:00PM

Reviews of new shows are full of hedges and what-ifs. Unless we're sent multiple episodes of a new show, critics can't always tell when iffy programs have the potential to become pretty good or even wonderful.

No hedging here: 'Fringe,' which begins its third season at 9PM ET Thursday, has evolved into a terrific show. Now that the Fox drama is consistently telling enjoyably complex and emotionally compelling stories, I'd hate it if 'Fringe' got lost in the fall shuffle.

So I'll start off by begging you to watch 'Fringe,' pretty please, and then I'll share some non-spoilery thoughts about the first two episodes of the third season below.

The third-season premiere doesn't start off with some giant disaster -- 'Fringe' has, thank goodness, moved away from the bombastic storytelling that afflicted its first season in particular. Still, 'Olivia' and 'The Box' are very entertaining hours. And if you're worried about catching up to where things stand on the show, Thursday's episode does a good job of recapping where the characters are and explaining where Season 3 will start from. (A slightly spoilery explainer clip is here, and you can also watch several season 2 episodes, including the two-part finale, here.)

Overall, season 3 appears to be building on what worked really well in season 2, and now the show has taken the character who was the least interesting when 'Fringe' began and made her and her dilemmas very intriguing indeed.

In the middle of its second season, 'Fringe' began focusing intently on two things -- first, on the parallel universe called 'Over There'; and second, on the relationships among FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), eccentric scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his acerbic son, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson).

Those twin engines drive Season 3, and they intersect and blend to the point that 'Fringe' feels like an atmospheric chamber piece. It still has action and suspense and all that good stuff, but themes of identity, loyalty, hubris, deception and missed opportunities reverberate through the show like intersecting melodies in a well-crafted musical composition.

The most resonant horrors on the show these days aren't giant bacteria or menacing mutants. Perhaps 'Fringe,' which began as (and still sometimes is) a show about FBI agents investigating weird phenomena, will engage in those kinds of monster-of-the-week stories in future, but those episodes are rarely examples of 'Fringe' at its best.

No, the most effective horrors involve betrayals that are perpetrated on the characters, sometimes by the people they love most. Over There's troubles -- and there are many -- were caused by Walter's desire to find and save a copy of his son, because in this universe, his son died. The fallout from that tragic choice and the characters' tentative steps toward intimacy and trust have given the proceedings much more meaningful stakes.

If I have one fear, it's that 'Fringe' will be forced (possibly by a nervous network) to stray too far from its mythology-driven stories, which are much more memorable than the standalone outings. It's still possible for the show to falter, but given how good the second half of season 2 and the start of season 3 are, I'm giving the show the benefit of the doubt.

What's especially impressive in Season 3 is how cogently and clearly events in the two different universes are handled. It's not hard to tell which is which and it's not hard to follow how the two worlds are connected, and those connections have only deepened the mythology in pleasing ways.

Thursday's episode spends time with "our" Olivia, who is stranded Over There (and 'The Wire's' Andre Royo does great work in a supporting role). Next week's hour focuses on Over There's even more driven version of Olivia, who has taken up residence in Walter and Peter's world and has a very definite agenda.

It's nice to see a parallel universe that is, for once, not an excuse for a show's cast to overact and ham it up. If anything, Over There is quieter but it's also more unsettling and even subtly menacing.

The directors of the show do a terrific job of making Over There feel different, via odd angles and a color palette that somehow seems a little off. But the dilemmas there, as in the "regular" universe, hinge on tangled relationships and difficult memories. And it's even more clear that Walter's choices had awful repercussions Over There, which is on a war footing mostly thanks to his hubris.

The two universes offer Noble, in particular, many opportunities to display his continually amazing range. Over There's "Walternate" is a commanding, efficient leader -- the man that Walter might have been had he not been consumed by personal tragedies and his own ambition.

And Torv, given the opportunity to play two different Olivias, both of whom are faced with interesting dilemmas and challenges, rises to the occasion. For the longest time, I couldn't see why 'Fringe' had cast Torv, but now that the actress has a lot to play in two juicy roles, every scene with Olivia or "Bolivia" (as the writers apparently call her) is charged with new tension. She manages to make the two characters different, even in their gestures, and I have to say that I'm a fan of the red hair she sports Over There.

Now that Olivia is in an alien world and a Bolivia with ambiguous loyalties is here, every scene with those characters has an additional weight and tension. To say more would be to give away too much, but in these two hours, at least, there are layers of meaning, suspense and drama that I never thought 'Fringe' would have.

The pilot for 'Fringe' never hinted at these developments. But the magic of TV is that having faith sometimes pays off.

Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman on the writing and evolution of Fringe

      Email Post       9/23/2010 02:24:00 PM

Ed Gross of ComicBookMovie.com has an exclusive interview with Fringe executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman on the writing and evolution of the series. One of the important elements of the Fringe storytelling is the evolution of the "Myth-alone" - a hybrid of a stand-alone episode and a mythology episode:
J.H. WYMAN: So near the end of last season we coined a term called a “myth-alone.” It sounds crazy, but it makes perfect sense. “White Tulip” is a perfect example of a myth-alone – you're watching a compelling story, and it’s FRINGE-like, and you'll get the benefit of that creepiness, and that's a far out idea – but you're also going to have the through-lines of the mythology of Walter dealing with the secret of Peter. The response for those kinds of episodes was really overwhelming from our fans, and that was a large get for us as far as a realization.

JEFF PINKNER: With myth-alones we're advancing our characters’ journey while every episode has a beginning, a middle and an end, so if you only watch one out of every five episodes, you can enjoy the case and you know enough about the characters to know, in a couple of minutes, where they are, and get sucked into their internal drama. For the more regular fans of the show, the narrative is constantly evolving while they're seeing the little story of the week.

  • In the Lab: John Noble and prop master Rob Smith take viewers on a tour of the Fringe Lab set and show off the gizmos and gadgets therein.
  • Unusual Side Effects: Watch the cast giggle and snicker through a familiar mix of miscues and bumbled lines. You can see the Fringe season 2 gag reel here.

BTW, did anyone else have any trouble finding the Fringe Season 2 Blu-rays/DVDs? The first store I went to (Walmart) only carried the DVDs - and they were sold out! The second store I tried (Best Buy) didn't have the Blu-rays on display with the new releases, or in the regular TV section.

Did you buy you Fringe Season 2 yet? If so, which version did you buy?

Which version of Fringe Season 2 did you buy (or plan to buy)?

What AreThe Ten Most Anticipated Returning Fall Shows?

      Email Post       9/09/2010 10:58:00 AM

What Are the 10 Most Anticipated Returning Fall Shows?

NCIS, Fringe and Glee are the most hotly anticipated returning fall shows, according to TVGuide.com's TV Team research panel.

Fall TV: Get scoop on all your favorite returning shows

The shows were the top picks in a survey conducted Aug. 9-15 that included 3,547 of the approximately 10,000 members of the research panel.

NCIS, which ended last season with Gibbs' father being targeted by a drug cartel, tops the list for the second year in a row. Fringe's finale introduced the idea that this season will take place in two different universes, and Glee ended with Sue Sylvester being impressed enough with the Gleeks' moxie to keep glee club around.

Check out the premiere dates for new and returning fall shows

The 10 most anticipated shows are:

1. NCIS (CBS)
2. Fringe (Fox)
3. Glee (Fox)
4. Castle (ABC)
5. Bones (Fox)
6. Chuck (NBC)
7. The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
8. Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
9. Supernatural (CW)
10. Dexter (Showtime)

Scoring well but not quite making the top 10 were CBS' The Good Wife, ABC's Modern Family, the CW's The Vampire Diaries, Fox's House and FX's Sons of Anarchy.

Are these the shows you can't wait to see? Share your picks in the comments below!

Fringe "Pimp My App" Contest Extended

      Email Post       9/03/2010 08:27:00 AM

The deadline for the Fringe "Pimp My App!" has been extended until 6:00 pm PDT on Monday, September 6th.

Here's the direct word from AppNation:
OK, you have 3 (!) extra days to work on your app for Fox Television and "Fringe". With the Holiday Weekend approaching, we figure the boys and girls down at Fox won't be reviewing the apps until Tuesday morning anyway so your new deadline is Monday evening, September 6th at 6pm Pacific Time, and not a moment later!!! You've got 3 extra days so pimp those apps and no late entries will be accepted. No exceptions!

We will also have very specific uploading instructions for your submissions over the weekend so keep an eye out for that as well.

We are all excited to see what you all have come up with and I know Fox is as well. And don't forget those 10G's on the line! Hack on!
Good news if you haven't quite finished (or started) your Fringe app! Remember, there's $10,000 up for grabs, so take this extra time to really show them what you got!

Fringe Season 3 QR Codes

      Email Post       9/02/2010 09:06:00 PM

On the bottom of the Fringe season 3 poster (and on the tail end of recent Fringe commercials), there is a strange looking "Fox Code". This QR Code is a type of bar code "for smartphones", that can be read by a QR Code app on your phone (or by using a QR Code website). The code reveals a website - in this case a new Fringe mobile website at http://m.fox.com/qr/fr.

There are some videos, photos, and cast info, but nothing you can't find on the Fox.com/Fringe site or on FringeTelevision.com. However, maybe once Season 3 starts there will be more going on here...
