A Russian scientist in 1920s Europe tries to create “an army of ape warriors” -- first by artificially inseminating a female chimp with human sperm, then, when that doesn’t work, by reversing the process, implanting ape sperm into a young Russian woman.

Is there any surprise that the person telling us this gruesome and remarkably true tale is John Noble, the star of “Fringe?”

“It was a primitive attempt at genetic manipulation,” says Noble, who plays genius Walter Bishop on the Fox drama and is also hosting “Dark Matters: Twisted But True,” which premieres Wednesday.


WEIRD BUT TRUE: Noble weighs in..
“We’re far more sophisticated these days in terms of our understanding of the human genome. At the time those experiments were done, they didn’t have that knowledge, so they were just trying to cross whatever they could. It raises the question -- why would you want to do it?”

For each of the show’s six hourlong episodes, Noble brings us three true tales of science gone awry, including a scientist who transplanted the head of one monkey onto another, and a woman who was attacked by her own hands.

The show employs re-creations over Noble’s narrative, and hopes to prompt the viewer to contemplate science’s dilemmas.

“The question is, is there anything we shouldn’t approach? Probably not,” says Noble, whose “Fringe” character discovered an alternative universe thanks to the use of LSD. “There was absolutely nothing wrong with what Einstein did: He found a way to allow other scientists to split the atom, and it was a wonderful, exciting time. How perfect is this: Science Channel is teaming with Fringe star John Noble to host a show about, yup, real-life bizarre experiments.

In Dark Matters, Noble explores the most unusual scientific research ever conducted — including head transplantation studies, actual zombie investigations (!) and attempts to cross-breed humans and those damn dirty apes (trailer below).

“The stories we share in Dark Matters are as outlandish as a great sci-fi script or as disturbing as a classic horror tale — the only difference is that they’re all true,” Noble said. “The series offers a glimpse into the dark side of science, as well as human nature.”
The show will use reenactments and CGI to tell the true stories of sometimes ethically challenged experiments throughout history.

“Dark Matters offers a fascinating insight into moments of scientific history where individuals went to extreme measures to achieve a breakthrough,” said Debbie Adler Myers, general manager and executive vp of Science. “It’s impossible to turn away from these true stories that you always assumed were just outlandish urban legends. This is real science — just the dark side of it, featuring brilliant minds who eventually took a dramatic turn. Dark Matters has an initial series order of six episodes and debuts Aug. 31 at 10 p.m.

How Would The Actor's Strike Affect Fringe?

It's only been a few months since the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike ended, and now an actor's strike looms over Hollywood. In a nutshell, actors want what the writers got - a piece of the internet pie.

Fringe has a lot to lose if there is a strike:

[Networks] are puzzled over how to proceed with fall season promotions. Fox, for one, was planning to blow the doors out with barrages of Fringe buzz, but may hold back if the show's early-July production start is in jeopardy.

Fox has given Fringe a superstar schedule with a House lead-in this fall, and an American Idol lead-in this spring, but strike delay could throw everything off. House already has some episodes "in the can", ironically thanks to the WGA strike.

Comic-con would also be affected by a strike, preventing movie stars from attending and giving autographs. So while we might not get an Anna Torv or Joshua Jackson appearance in San Diego next month, JJ Abrams would still be there promoting Fringe (but not Star Trek since Paramount has already pulled out).

Fortunately, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have already come to a tentative agreement and will vote on July 7^th, which is expected to pass. While the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has not been able to reach an agreement, and their contract expires on Monday, June 30^th, they would need a 75% approval vote to strike, which is unlikely.

Where to begin? I should probably start with who I am (but I'll keep it short). I had a real blast blogging about another JJ Abrams project, Cloverfield. I enjoyed it so much that, for a time, it became all consuming. As Cloverfield began to wind down I came to the conclusion that my time was best spent all consumed (read: I find what I want to do when I all growed up). With that decided, the only thing left to do was to find a new project worthy of my obsession. That particular quest was short-lived since soon after I started looking I came across this Wired article about Fringe. I was intrigued, and as I dug deeper into the story, I discovered that Fringe was exactly what I was looking for. A show that's been described as a cross between X-Files, LOST and House, and with an overarching mythology to boot. Yeah, it was safe to say I'd found my new reason for being and the seed for fringetv was sown.

Fringe TV is designed to have something for everyone, or alternatively, everything a fan of Fringe could want. But mostly, it is designed to be a collaborative site because in my experience, those are the best kind.
