On June 26th, 2013 The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films held the 39th Annual Saturn Awards.
I was reading through the history of the Saturn Awards and at one point they were actually broadcast. It's too bad they have not done that in a while. It was so worth it being in the ballroom and watching the whole ceremony.

Fringe's EW Interview at SDCC 2012

It's been a busy day in social media and at the San Diego Comic Con for Fringe, and here's a fun interview filmed today with Anna Torv, John Noble, Joshua Jackson, and Lance Reddick by Entertainment Weekly.

Lance Reddick has certainly made a name for himself playing mysterious and even occasionally frightening characters on such shows as "The Wire," "Lost," and currently "Fringe," where he stars as Special Agent Broyles in one universe and Colonel Broyles in the other. Recently, though, we had an opportunity to see a completely new side of the actor courtesy of a new Funny or Die clip that features him as a shockingly inappropriate manager of a toy store. (If you haven't seen the video yet, you can to the left -- with a wwarning for language)

We recently had a chance to talk with the actor about taking on a more humorous role, the future of his Fox series, and how "The Wire" has managed to gain in popularity following the show's end.


Matt Carter: So you've been known through 'Lost' and 'Fringe' for playing some very mysterious characters -- so how did this whole idea [of doing something different] for the Funny or Die skit come about?

Lance Reddick: Honestly, I've been wanting to do some comedy for quite a while. I've done some comedy for the stage, but since I started to do a lot of television about 12 years ago I haven't done as much. But I love doing it.
[My involvement came thanks to] Chad Kultgen, the guy who wrote it. He was approached by Funny or Die to do it, and he was a huge fan of 'The Wire' so if he was going to do it he wanted to do it with me ... I had never met Matt before, and really the only thing he had sent me was the opening monologue. I was flipped -- I was like 'this is hysterical. I want to do this.'

So how long did it take you to shoot this?We started filming around 11 in the morning and we finished around 4. It was one of those things where they said 'whenever you have a break in your schedule, we'll set it up.' So when I happened to have about a week off from 'Fringe' -- my shooting schedule between episodes just so happened to fall like that -- I had my manager call them and we put it together.

So is this something that you could see yourself doing more of in the future?
Absolutely! I never thought of myself of being thought of as one type until 'The Wire,' and I always did stuff that was different. Granted, much of the stuff I did before that was still really intense (laughs), but it was still really different.

When you look back at 'Fringe' now versus where it was three and a half seasons ago, it's become one of the most complicated shows out there in between the alternate universes and what's happening with Peter right now. When you were starting out on the show, did you ever see any of this coming? Did [the producers] give you some sort of roadmap?
No. As a matter of fact, I think the show took a bit of a turn in the second season. I honestly don't think they were necessarily going to build alternate universes from the beginning. If they were, they just didn't tell me -- which is also possible. My character changed quite a bit from the first season to the second season -- honestly I feel like he became a lot less mysterious. So in the middle of the second season, you kind of knew that he was a good guy.
So in the second season we had the alternate [Colonel] Broyles, and then he died [in the] third season. And now he's back.

One of the things I wanted to specifically ask you about during season three. What was it like to have to play [Agent] Broyles looking at Colonel Broyles' dead body?
It was really surreal. I went in the day that we shot [the scene]-- and even though I went in and did the life mask and all that stuff -- until the day that we shot it I hadn't seen [the finished product] ... it was freaky. I wish I had a more eloquent way of putting it. It was almost like an out of body experience. You know when something happens that is so bizarre or so horrifying that your nervous system just short-circuits and disconnects? It was like that.
On the other hand, it's a great thing to play. (Laughs.)

Fringe's Peter has returned!

After Olivia (Anna Torv) and Walter (John Noble) both realized they were having visions of the same strange man, they set out to discover his identity. Considering that Peter (Joshua Jackson) took the form of a bright blue blob of energy -- a side effect of trying to cross into the timeline -- he found them first. After observing The Energy Blob absorbing all things metal, they mistakenly assumed that it was actually a rogue cortexiphan patient Olivia had previously encountered who had the ability to project himself . Although they hunted down the subject in question, turns out he wasn't responsible for The Blob, but could destroy it.

Fortunately, realizing it was literally the man of her dreams, Olivia stopped the patient in time, though he still seemingly provided enough juice for Peter to reappear in corporeal form at Reiden Lake, the site of over-there Peter's death when he was a boy.

So, Peter is back — but no one remembers him, as showcased when Olivia said, "Who are you?" Who is he indeed? Since this is the convoluted world of Fringe, we need to get acquainted with this new Peter, so we've compiled the five things to know about him and the reality he's facing now that he's returned:

1. Peter 2.0 is definitely an upgrade: Peter is technically the same man we've come to know and love, but he isn't the man we first met. "Because the guy that we met in the beginning of Fringe had no desire to be there, and slowly but surely got warped into this, as John and I described it, fanboy," Jackson previously told us. "In the course of doing that, he kind of went from being the impetuous teenager of the show to kind of sulking in the corner, to actually being a man. And the guy who would come back to the show after having sacrificed himself for the love of his family is a different man. I think he's grown up a lot. I think a different guy comes back than the guy that left."

2. There will be trust issues: They may not know him, but Peter still retains all of his memories of them, which will cause the Fringe Division to put him on lockdown. "When he shows up claiming all these things and knowing all these things, it's really freaky," Lance Reddick says. "Broyles' attitude is that it's possible what he's saying is true, but the last place I'm going to do is to believe him... at least at first. It has to reach a point where there's so much validity to the information that he has and the way that he helps, that over time, he's given more and more trust and more and more freedom to operate, work and help."

It's Always Sunny On Fringe

Fringe's Lance Reddick made a guest appearance on the FX TV show "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" as jazz club owner Reggie.

Reddick is himself a jazz musician when he's not playing an FBI agent on TV.

Also, Zap2it recently got a chance to speak with legendary comedic actor Danny DeVito about "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." He made a really interesting comparison for "Sunny" vs. "Taxi," the show he was famous for in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

"It's like... have you ever watched 'Fringe?' says DeVito. "It's like another universe. It's like the same thing, in a way, because ['Sunny' has] really good writing and we had great writing on 'Taxi.' We had a great cast on 'Taxi' and we have a great cast on Sunny. And we have people who really care about each other, but it's just an alternate universe. It's like a kind of a different milieu. A different whole zeitgeist, what goes on there."

Fringe When it comes to the fallout of the finale, I’m the first to admit I’ve been focused on the Peter puzzle and the fun of now having double the Walters and Olivias in our midst. But what about Broyles? Does he now get two Fringe divisions to lord over, bickering doppelgangers and all? Lance Reddick suspects as much. “I think the challenge for Broyles is going to be balancing his relationship with his own Fringe division and the other one – the whole, ‘Who’s in charge?’ kind of thing,” he tells TVLine. But yes, Reddick also is fixated on He Who Never Existed. “I just want to find out what’s going on with Peter,” he shares. “But I’ll find out when everybody else does!”
