'Fringe' star Joshua Jackson relegated to sidelines while costar Anna Torv takes center stage

Despite all the creepy enigmas that surround Fox's sci-fi drama "Fringe," it's no great mystery as to what the secret is behind the show's appeal.

It's the chemistry among FBI agent Oliva Dunham (Anna Torv), her love interest Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) and his eccentric scientist father, Walter (John Noble).

So what on Earth - this or any alternate one - were the show's brain-trust thinking when they wrote one of the show's main characters, Peter, out as he sacrificed himself to save this world and an alternate universe from destroying each other at the end of last season's finale?

Fringe Easter Eggs: Alias Scanner

It’s A Parallel Life! Or: Welcome To Bishopsville

Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?
- Clarence, Angel, 2nd Class

I know what it's like to have a hole in my life. It's been there as long as I can remember.
- Olivia Dunham, Fringe Division

"Neither Here Nor There" is a title that evokes a few things. First and foremost, the strange here/not here existence of Peter Bishop; the fact that the present timelines have changed; and perhaps most importantly, the little piece of real estate that now exists beneath the Statue of Liberty. Right now, the show's reality is like a Venn Diagram - the two spheres that threatened to smash into each other have now partly merged and that merged sliver is, quite literally, neither here nor there. It's a bridge that owes allegiance to neither side. While watching the episode I was frequently reminded of another story whose bridge was crucial to its story: It's A Wonderful Life.

Observiews 4.01 Neither Here Nor There

      Email Post       9/29/2011 03:03:00 AM

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense :)

This season, as far as Observiews go, is going to be a little more challenging. Fringe is not available on Hulu (1 day after air date) anymore, so I’m relying on screencaps from FringeFiles.com. I did tape it and will use some of mine but the quality is not that good. So please be patient.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong:). I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews.

I want to start where I left off at the end of last season. If you remember, Peter went in the machine to save both universes. By doing so, he wrote himself out of existence and we were left with our mouths open, at least I was. So…

1.01 "Pilot"

Olivia: “I just want to go back to before.” Broyles: “Dunham, I don’t think you can.”

Well, in a sense we are but it’s slightly different. Let me do a recap before we delve into details.

Q&A WITH FRINGE STAR JOSH JACKSON

      Email Post       9/28/2011 09:17:00 PM

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011
By Brandy Phillips

We had an opportunity to ask FRINGE star Josh Jackson a few questions about his role as a writer on the new digital comic series BEYOND THE FRINGE, here’s what he had to say:

THE SOURCE: How did you get involved with this project?
JOSH JACKSON: I’m not sure who above my pay grade made the choice to ask me but, I was brought in when our producers where looking for writers for the new run of Fringe comics.

TS: Are you a big comics reader or fan?
JJ:
Like just about every guy my age comics were a huge part of growing up. I have probably spent thousands of hours debating ‘who would win’ and ‘which powers kick ass more’ But lately I tend to read longer form graphic novels.

TS: What has it been like for you to write a comic, do you enjoy the process?
JJ:
Writing in comic form is totally different from standard script writing. Thankfully I had a couple helpers to get me used to writing panel by panel instead of scene by scene.

TS: What can we expect from “Beyond the Fringe”?
JJ:
From my portion of it, I hope that it will fill in a piece of Peters’ story in a satisfying way.

TS: How does the comic tie to season four of the show?
JJ:
You’ll have to read ‘em and find out!

Fringe Discuss: Who Would You Like To See Return On Fringe?

Welcome back to our weekly feature here at Fringe Television called "Fringe Discuss",where we throw out a Fringe-related topic and eagerly aniticipate your feedback.

This week's topic is inspired from Michael Aussiello's 9/27 post at tvline.com (NOTE: You do NOT have to go look at that spoilery post to participate in this discussion.)

In this new reality, where Peter doesn’t (quite) exist, events have played out differently in both universes, and some characters who had died in the Blue/Red universes may still be alive in this new Orange universe.

Discussion Question: Any thoughts on which character may not be dead in the re-set timeline?

Please give us your opinions in the comments below. As always we ask that you respect everyone's opinion, and keep your posts clean.

NOTE:This is NOT the place to discuss spoilers! Comments containing true spoilers will be deleted. We have a great place to discuss spoilers called "Fringe Spoilers, " which you can get to by clicking on its tab at the top of the page.

Anna Torv talks Fringe, says she is unsure about film spin-off

As sci-fi series Fringe returns to Sky1 tonight for a fourth season, Australian actress Anna Torv has spoken about working on the show and how her character differs from The X Files’ Dana Scully

Torv, 33, was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is now based in Vancouver. She rose to prominence in TV series The Secret Life Of Us, Mistresses and The Pacific and since 2008 has played FBI agent Olivia Dunham in Fringe.

Here she talks about meeting Fringe producer JJ Abrams on the set of his Star Trek movie and whether she would like to see the series make the transition to the big screen.

'Ask Matt' Addresses A Confused Fringe Fan

      Email Post       9/26/2011 04:34:00 PM

Question: I love Fringe and have been watching it faithfully from the beginning. I know you are a big fan as well. However, after watching the first episode without Peter, I have to admit to being thoroughly or almost thoroughly confused. I realize this is kind of playing out in a sort of It's a Wonderful Life way — Walter has difficulty staying grounded at all without Peter being there, etc. But other than understanding that, I didn't get what was happening with faux Olivia (is that what we called her and is she being kept confined somewhere?), and I thought Agent Lincoln Lee (now with glasses) had a double in the alternate universe as well, but am not sure. Any help or explanation is appreciated. If a fan like me is confused, I'm wondering about others who haven't seen the show at all? — Faye

Matt Roush: This Friday's episode, which I'll preview in my weekend guide later this week, should give you a better sense of how the two worlds (and the various doppelgangers) are co-existing. And yes, alt-Lincoln was well established last season before we met "our" version, who I liked very much. But there's no question that Fringe isn't the easiest show to make sense of, so to address your last question, I think Fox and the producers have pretty much given up on the idea of growing the audience. (That's why Friday is as habitable a perch as the show can expect.)

No worries, Faye, and fellow Fringe fans. You know you can ask your questions here at Fringe Television.

Rough-Edged Reset

Neither Here, Nor There

Fringe is back for a fourth season, stoked with a full head of story telling steam. Thanks to the mind breaking removal of Peter from not just a timeline, but existence itself, at the climatic end of Season 3.  Fox fanned those flames even higher with an excellent off season promotional campaign that peaked just before the Season 4 premiere creating a buzz with the slogan, ‘Where is Peter Bishop?’

And the Fringe showrunners continue to demonstrate they are not afraid to break with convention. We are treated to our initial glimpse of a Captain Kirk - Tholian Webbing style, Peter Bishop in the very first scene.

“I know what it’s like to have a hole in my life. It’s been there as long as I can remember.”

I always get nervous returning to a show after a long hiatus. Especially a show like Fringe, which produces precisely the type of massive theorizing that I am so resistant to, post-Lost. Will I be pilloried if I don’t spend paragraphs meditating on the significance of the yellow/amber/orange credits? Will I miss a massive “clue,” get it all wrong, and have a bizarre idiosyncratic reaction that no one else can agree with or even understand?

FRINGE: Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman on the Season Premiere and What’s to Come
September 24, 2011 by Marisa Roffman

Now that both coasts have seen the FRINGE season premiere, what did you guys think?

There was some major groundwork laid for what could be coming up this season, an act of rebellion, a new enemy and some pretty new credits for the show.

As you may have suspected, I had a few questions after I viewed the episode, so I grilled FRINGE executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman to see what they were willing to share…

The Observer makes the choice to once again go against what he’s been told to do in regards to the Bishops. How will that play out and what will the consequences be for him going forward?
Jeff Pinkner: Well obviously we can’t tell you that!

You could tease…
JP: You picked the [right] word. As [J.H. Wyman] alluded earlier, a lot of our storytelling lives in consequences, so there certainly will be some.

Fringe Season 4 Premier Press Kit

      Email Post       9/23/2011 11:38:00 AM

Yesterday I received the Fringe press kit for the Fringe Season 4 premier. Inside the envelope was a letter from Peter Bishop, a "Save Peter" t-shirt, and a DVD with the first two episodes of Fringe Season 4.

I watched both episodes last night, and they are excellent! Episode #401"Neither Here Nor There" really sets up the new season, and episode #402 "One Night in October" is a great "mythalone" that gives a hint to how the rest of the season will play out.

The letter from Peter Bishop introduces the episodes, and gives some assurance that the question "Where Is Peter Bishop?" will be answered soon.

You can read the entire letter after the break.

'Fringe' Joshua Jackson interview: 'I'm excited about Peter's return'
Friday, September 23 2011, 4:25am EDT
By Morgan Jeffery, TV Reporter

Where is Peter Bishop? The location of Fringe's roguish hero may be a mystery, but luckily, his real-life counterpart Joshua Jackson is a little easier to track down! The new season of Fringe begins tonight on Fox - and will debut in the UK next week - so we caught up with Josh to chat about Peter's disappearance, those Observer theories and what we can expect from season four!

Your character 'disappeared' in the Fringe finale at the end of the third series. How surprised were you when you read the script?
"I helped to build the ending to season three, so I wasn't surprised by it at all. I thought it was important to go to that level because it's the fulfilment of the myth – and that's exactly where we were heading with the story. It's the logical and necessary final point to Peter's storyline, so I thought it was important that we went to that epic level. I'm glad we achieved it. I'm glad that's where we ended at the end of the last season."

It sounds like you're pretty proud of the finale…
"You know what? I think Fringe always does well with its finales, but I'm incredibly proud of the last one. The most iconic image of Fringe was probably the end of the finale to the first season when you saw the World Trade Center – but last season's finale is also up there. Not to toot my own horn, but I hope that this cliffhanger had a lot of people talking about the show. It got a lot of people thinking."

How proud of the show are you in general?

"I'm incredibly proud, especially when it comes to the storytelling. We've taken this show to places that people would never have expected – and I love that. I think that's really good storytelling. Last year, we used the alternate universe to open up the Olivia character and revealed who she is by seeing her opposite.

"In season two, we got to see Walter become a human being again by having a relationship with his son. At the end of season three, Peter became a man. And part of his becoming a man was making a sacrifice. The sacrifice that he had to make was his existence for the lives and happiness of the people that he loved. There is no more noble sacrifice that you can make. That was epic."

Did you think that the character of Peter had come full circle by the end of the last season?
"That's exactly what I felt. When we introduced Peter in season one, he was a guy who cared about nothing. He lived a nihilistic life with no close friends, but you see a completely different person if you move forward three years."

How would you describe him at the end of the third season?
"When you move forward three years, that same guy decides that it's his fate and his destiny to get into that machine and disappear. That's a major progression for a character. He decides to conspire with his own father to make himself not exist so that the people he loves can have a chance to live. That is a very noble sacrifice, and it's not anything the guy would have considered doing three years ago. To me, that's a full stop to Peter. That's the end of this character progression. He can't go any further than that, can he?"

What can you tell us about Peter's return to Fringe in the new season of the show?
"I'm not allowed to give anything away about the new season of Fringe, but I can tell you that I was extremely excited to see what avenue the writers wanted to take in how they bring Peter back."

Before you saw any scripts to the new season, did you have any idea how they would achieve his return?
"I thought about it a lot, and I considered the possibility that Peter could come back as a guardian angel protecting the people that he has made this great sacrifice for. There's another version where he could be an Observer. Well, if he steps outside of the timeline, the only characters that we've introduced into our universe that can do that are the Observers..."

You'd have to shave your head if you became an Observer…
"I'd love that. You know what? I thought the Observer idea was super cool – but you'll just have to watch and see if that's the direction we go."

Can't you even tell us a little secret about the new season?
"I can tell you that everything that we knew with the end of season three is still valid without Peter, but that's it. I'll also tell you that I was equally as curious to see how I get reintegrated into the show for the fourth season. I don't want to sound selfish, but that's something I was very eager to discover. Very eager indeed."

Fringe returns to Fox tonight at 9/8c and airs in the UK from September 28 on Sky1.

Complete List of Ari Margolis' Summer 'Fringe Song Of The Day'

      Email Post       9/22/2011 11:54:00 AM

I've posted before here at Fringe Television how lucky we are that Fringe Media Master, Ari Margolis, is also a great friend to Fringe fans.

Ari started posting a Fringe Song Of The Day(SOTD)on his Twitter account in May and he kept it up the entire summer, which made the summer hiatus that much more fun, and feel a bit shorter.

Ari even took fan SOTD requests and posted them, and solicited at least 3 from
Fringe cast member Jasika Nicole who plays both Astrid Farnsworth's on the TV series.

Check out the entire list of Ari's picks for 'Fringe Song Of The Day' by clicking here.
Enjoy! And go to Ari's Twitter account at @jonxproductions and thank him for an awesome
job.

Fringe Season 4 Conference Call with Joel Wyman and Jeff Pinkner

Fringe S4 Conference Call w/ Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman by FringeTelevision

I had the unique and awesome opportunity to be included on today's conference call with executive producers Joel Wyman and Jeff Pinkner that took place at 2PM Eastern today.

Joel and Jeff were in great spirits. First, they reassured everyone that Joshua Jackson's character was not permanently gone. "We would never do that."

They also said "Peter's part of the DNA of the show," and "the previous three years did indeed happen." Joel and Jeff said they would be frustrated if a show they watched did that, and it's not part of their storytelling method to let that happen.

Then out of the blue, Jeff Pinkner started talking about the incredible "Where Is Peter Bishop" fanvid and how much they appreciated it.

The Question Asked Around the World: An Interview with the #WhereisPeterBishop? Fan Video Editor

      Email Post       9/21/2011 05:30:00 PM

I once remarked that one of the best things about FRINGE is that the show inspires creativity in the fanbase. We're a passionate bunch, and use many outlets to express our affection for our special show. Fans create art of all kinds, write fan-fiction, blog, create pod-casts, and make videos about FRINGE. It is done purely for love of an amazing show, but sometimes something special catches the eyes of many.

What started as a fan-project for Zoey M. became something more. It ended up becoming an extraordinary journey for her and fellow Cortexifans around the world.

Word about the #WhereIsPeterBishop video project was spread throughout Twitter, Tumblr, forums, and various FRINGE Facebook fan groups. The request was simple - fan picture submissions from as many different places/landmarks as possible, featuring the message, "Where Is Peter Bishop?" We all knew it was going to be something special, but no one expected the high-level attention that her labor of love would receive.

The FOX online promotion head for FRINGE, Ari Margolis, even became involved by taking #WIPB pictures of John Noble, Jasika Nicole and he-whose-character-does-not exist-but-will, Joshua Jackson. But everyone was surprised when they read this Give Me My Remote interview with FRINGE producers Joel Wyman and Jeff Pinkner:

FRINGE: Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman on ‘Neither Here Nor There,’ Fan Support, Alt-Nina, and More
September 20, 2011 by Marisa Roffman

After having arguably the biggest cliffhanger of the season — no, seriously, where the heck did Peter Bishop go?! — FRINGE is finally back this week with new episodes! (I won’t judge you if you do a happy dance. Swear.)

And while it would be way too spoilery to do a traditional “You Ask, I Answer” for the first two hours of the season, I think I found a solution you guys will be a little happier with: teases straight from FRINGE executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman!

I spoke with Pinkner and Wyman earlier today, and they spoke about about their very big premiere, the fan support, alt-Nina, season 4, and more…

Whoa! Chuck, Supernatural and Fringe Prove to have More Fall TV Buzz...

Whoa! Chuck, Supernatural and Fringe Prove to have More Fall TV Buzz than Glee, The Playboy Club, Charlie’s Angels

Posted by: Jessica Rae

You’ll be surprised at what Chuck season 5 (Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Joshua Gomez) , Supernatural season 7 (Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalacki) and Fringe season 4 (Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv) have in common. According to Banyan Branch, a leading full-service social media agency, these are the top three TV shows receiving buzz online, especially when it comes to social media. Do TV fans matter more than ever? Damn right they do. And the results will surprise even the most loyal of TV watchers.

Fall TV 2011 Surprises:

•The top three shows currently receiving buzz online are Chuck, Supernatural and Fringe
•Newcomers and returning favorites such as Glee, The Playboy Club and Charlie’s Angels have generated almost *no* online excitement
•Even more surprising, online chatter for Glee, a show that has received an extraordinary of media attention during its first two seasons, has been fairly negative and conversation has pointed to the failure of the show’s promotion during the NFL games this past weekend.
Additional takeaways:

•Banyan Branch’s research indicates that the top three shows are using a variety of media outlets and their own Twitter properties for promotion, with popular sites like E!, Entertainment Weekly and People sharing exclusive content, season trailers and sneak peeks with Twitter followers.
•Supernatural is exploring GetGlue, a service similar to FourSquare, but instead of checking into physical locations, you check in to TV shows you’re watching, books you’re reading or music you’re listening to. (GetGlue seems very popular with people on Twitter.)
•Social viewing parties are emerging. Unofficial viewing parties are held via Twitter simply by fans using a pre-designated hashtag to have conversations with each other (Editor’s note: Such as #TVD but more specific like #TVDS3 for The Vampire Diaries season 3 conversations.)
•A shift is occurring in how fans communicate with shows as they start to get access to some of their favorite characters on their favorite television shows—this communication is a privilege they’re coveting! For TV shows, it’s a great way to identify influencers and build relationships, opening the door for turning a loyal fan into a brand advocate. As shows compete to stay on the air, regular engagement with fans on Twitter is an essential way to keep the buzz going. (Editor’s Note: I am more excited when I get to tweet with a TV show star than when I’m conducting an official interview with one on the phone. This is because on Twitter they aren’t scheduled to talk with me.)

'Fringe':Seth Gabel talks Lincoln Lee, Season 4

‘Fringe’: Seth Gabel talks Lincoln Lee, Season 4September 19, 2011 9:00 am

"Fringe" returns Friday night after a summer of hanging questions. Has Peter Bishop been erased from history? How will the two universes’ Fringe teams interact? Whatever happened to Amy Jessup, that new FBI agent they introduced awhile back? If any show is good at keeping its secrets, it’s "Fringe." Though one welcome spoiler did slip out over the summer months: Seth Gabel is moving from guest star to cast member in time for Season 4. That means we’ll be seeing more of Gabel’s character, Lincoln Lee.

When I chatted with Gabel about the promotion, I asked if it came with any hazing. Did John Noble make him do key stands? Clean his trainer? “It’s actually the opposite.” Gabel laughed. “John is a very protective person. He realized I was stepping into a new situation; he took a parental approach. Actually, I had to show him after a while that I was OK. When we went to Comic-Con he was introducing me to people saying, ‘This is Seth. He plays Lincoln Lee.’ I had to let him know I could handle it.”

Fans of "Fringe" know exactly who Lincoln Lee is. Besides having one of the coolest names in television, Lincoln is also a key member of the other universe’s Fringe team, which made him very prominent last season. It's been a big leap for a character who was originally planned for a one-episode gig. “My first introduction to the show was very unpredictable as far as how I’d be involved in the future of the story. I was just signed on for one guest episode. It was very open-ended on whether or not I’d even survive, but as we were shooting it, Akiva Goldsman, who was the writer and director of that episode, kept on putting in little hints that my character would be much more involved in the show. I started to get very excited, but I had to wait a whole summer if, in fact, I’d be back.”

Fringe Season 3 Blu-ray Unboxing

      Email Post       9/20/2011 08:10:00 PM

Fringe Season 3 is out today on Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray is available at Amazon for $44.99, and the DVD is $36.99. Both qualify for free shipping.

Best Buy has an exclusive "lenticular" cover (seen below) that shows the Blue or Red universe depending on how you look. However, they are priced $10 more than Amazon, but you do get a $10 Best Buy gift card with purchase.

The 22 episodes are spread over four blu-ray discs, and contains 3 hours of bonus material, including the Blu-ray exclusive "Glimmer to the Other Side". Here is a full summary of the extras from Blu-Ray.com:
The 4-disc Blu-ray release of Fringe: The Complete Third Season isn't exhaustive -- two audio commentaries and an hour of extras doesn't amount to much -- but it does feature a first for a Warner television release: a Maximum Episode Mode Picture-in-Picture experience. Sure, it's only available for one episode, but if future Warner releases follow suit (particularly if more episodes are explored per season), TV fans are in for a real treat.
  • Audio Commentaries: Two audio commentaries are available: "The Plateau" on Disc One, with executive producer Jeff Pinkner, writer/co-executive producer Monica Owusu-Breen and editor Timothy A. Good, and "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide" on Disc Four, with producer Tanya Swerling, editor Luyen Vu and visual effects supervisor Jay Worth. Both tracks are informative, I'll give them that, but the cast is sorely missed. And with twenty-two episodes spread across four discs, a whopping two crew commentaries just doesn't cut it.
  • Maximum Episode Mode: Glimmer to the Other Side (Disc 3, HD, 46 minutes): Executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman host this single-episode twist on Warner's Maximum Movie Mode formula, and it's a blast; such a blast that it's a shame more episodes don't feature a MEM track. What awaits those who venture into Episode 16, "OS," with the Maximum Episode Mode engaged? Interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, optional production featurettes, special effects breakdowns and more, all courtesy of a dynamic Picture-in-Picture window that sometimes houses the MEM content and sometimes houses the episode itself (so the MEM content can have more room to breathe). It's hands down the best feature in the set.
  • Duality of Worlds (Disc 4, HD, 30 minutes): Explore Walternate's universe in four production featurettes: "The Other You," "Visualizing an Alternate World," "A Machine of Destiny" and "The Psychology of Duality."
  • Constructing an Extra-Sensory Soundscape (Disc 4, HD, 7 minutes): How does the Fringe creative team tamper with your psyche? Through sound effects, music cues and other sonic sleight of hand.
  • Secrets of Fringe: The First People (Disc 4, HD, 2 minutes): An all-too-brief Q&A session with Jeff Pinkner and Jay Worth about The First People and their place in the series.
  • Gag Reel (Disc 4, HD, 3 minutes): Simple, funny and to the point. Just how I like my outtakes.
  • Animating "The Lysergic Acid Diethylamide" (Disc 4, HD, 8 minutes): A look at Episode 19's jump-the-shark animated sequences and the deadlines that propelled it.
  • Network Promos (Disc 4, HD, 6 minutes): Three lengthy promos round out the package.
  • BD-Live Functionality

Fringe Summer Rewatch: #322 "The Day We Died"

      Email Post       9/20/2011 06:43:00 AM

Join us for our Fringe Summer re-watch, where we review every episode of Fringe during the summer hiatus. Comments are welcome as we dig into the connections made over three seasons.

Editor's Note:This is the last installment of our 'Fringe Summer Rewatch' program that began 65 episodes ago in July.

I would like to thank Dennis, the owner of the Fringe Television site, for thoroughly supporting this endeavor.

I want to thank Ari Margolis, the man in LA behind all the excellent Fringe promos since last year, who kept us enthusiastic with his daily Fringe posts on Twitter, especially his creation-the 'Fringe Song Of the Day.'

Most importantly, I thank my writing staff who donated their time and talents:

Aimee Long, birdandbear, Dani, David Wu, Dixie, oranfly, sam spade, and Xindilini.

So here we are, wrapping up our Summer Rewatch with the mind blowing Season Three finale. Fringe has been building to this since an Observer left a drawing on a bar stool, and now at last we'll have our answers to the season's burning questions: What does the machine do? What's going to happen to Peter if he gets in it? And of course, we'll be left with a whole new set of questions. Naturally.

Do you know what it's like... to wake up and just for a moment... think that everything is as it was? And then to realize it's not... that the nightmare you had was real. - Secretary Bishop

The Day We Died picks up right where the previous episode left us. In the final heart-pounding moments of The Last Sam Weiss, Peter stepped into the machine, taking the last step on the long path toward his destiny, and carrying the hope of a world on his shoulders. His body convulsing with the energy coursing through it, he made his choice: when it came down to us or them, Peter chose his adopted world over his natural one.

Fringe Summer Rewatch: #321 "The Last Sam Weiss"

Join us for our Fringe Summer re-watch, where we review every episode of Fringe during the summer hiatus. Comments are welcome as we dig into the connections made over three seasons.

As the summer rewatch draws to a close, I’m happy that my final post will be for The Last Sam Weiss, as this is one of my top five Fringe episodes. As a great fan of the Fringe mythos, I was thrilled to finally have some answers to many questions that have been posed, even as far back as season one.  However, this episode has a special place in my heart because this is a big turning point in the extraordinary journey of the Fringe family. There are two epic love stories in Fringe, which is one of the main reasons I’ve enjoyed the show for so much in three seasons. The show has a great depth of heart.

Walter learns to let go - to step back and allow Peter to do what he must, even though the odds of him surviving are slim. Because "he is a man protecting his world." Olivia becomes empowered, and learns to accept that she really is extraordinary. Peter does what he must to help protect the ones he loves.

After an electrifying false start in 6:02 A.M. EST, we’ve almost reached the moment of truth. Peter and Olivia literally staring down the machine. But first, there was the little matter of a slightly-toasted and unconscious Peter, along with Olivia’s journey with Sam Weiss to uncover the secrets of the machine, and how he was given “knowledge” about the machine. Plus, Walter and Astrid tried to determine how to slow down the damage occurring in our world long enough to buy Olivia some time.

Fringe Summer Rewatch: #320 "6:02 AM EST"

      Email Post       9/18/2011 01:00:00 AM

The destruction had begun...
Join us for our Fringe Summer re-watch, where we review every episode of Fringe during the summer hiatus. Comments are welcome as we dig into the connections made over three seasons.

Until I watched the episode again, I would not have notice the parallel scenes for the two Walter Bishops. One is sacrificing his son to save his dying world. So was the other one. The only difference is the Walter we are more familiar with rather not. Ironically, both men in their darkest moments seek God's forgiveness.

Over there, we see the Secretary contemplate the consequences of activating the machine.
Oppenheimer saved us too. But at what cost? He couldn't bear the nightmares... the screams of all the innocents he had killed. "Now, I am become death, the Destroyer of Worlds." Only in our case, that really is true. We destroyed their world to save ours. May God have mercy on us.

Over here, Walter prays for a miracle.
I asked you for a sign, and you sent it to me. A white tulip. And I was so grateful. Since then, in moments of deep despair, I have found solace in believing that you had forgiven me. I was willing to let him go. I was willing to let Peter die. I've changed. That should matter. God, I know my crimes are unforgivable. So punish me. Do what you want to me. But I beg you, spare our world.
There was no turning back when the machine was turned on. Little did the Secretary know that he had set in motion a course of events that would ultimately cause the destruction of his own world in one possible future.

Fringe Summer Rewatch:#319 "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide"

      Email Post       9/17/2011 12:01:00 AM

Join us for our Fringe Summer re-watch, where we review every episode of Fringe during the summer hiatus. Comments are welcome as we dig into the connections made over three seasons.

Episode 319, entitled "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide," which will be referred to from here on out as "LSD," is a real trip. Literally! This "little family unit" as Peter calls the 3 of them in episode 216: himself, Walter, and Olivia, really go places in this episode, all while seated in the triangle seen in the above photo. (We know Fringe creator JJ Abrams loves triangles, but it's interesting to see one literally here.)

A Little History On Lysergic Acid Diethylamide(LSD)
First synthesized by Albert Hofmann in 1938 this drug was used to treat psychiatric disorders.
It is from the ergot family. Ergot is a fungus that grows on grains, most commonly on rye. Sandoz Pharmaceuticals introduced a prescription form of it called Delysid, in 1947, and it was very promising in the medical world.

Interestingly, the CIA thought it might be helpful in chemical warfare and mind control in the 1950's and gave it to soldiers and civilians as part of the 'MKULTRA Program'(remember I mentioned that in my commentary on "Of Human Action"?)
Apparently it was used widely for recreational purposes in the 1960's which led to a political uprising and then its restriction. Today there a few groups who still study its medical applications in controlled trials.
