Fringe FAIL: Kirk Acevedo not FIRED, was "let go"

      Email Post       5/22/2009 08:50:00 AM

After the backlash from fans yesterday, CO-showrunner Jeff Pinkner did a little bit of damage control, and issued a statement to TV Guide regarding the status of Kirk Acevedo on Fringe:
“Like all things on Fringe, there is more to this story than meets the eye.” In fact Pinkner not only confirms to TV Guide Magazine that Acevedo “was not fired,” he hints that we’ll see more Agent Francis in season 2. Literally.

“We have already seen two of him on the show,” teases Pinkner. “We have already met the second Charlie. He had a scar on his face.”
Notice Pinkner doesn't actually say we'll see Charlie next season, he just "hints" at it (at least according to TV Guide). In fact, as of yesterday, I hear there were discussions on how Charlie could be written out of the story.

What's the real story? Pinkner is right about one thing, there is more to this story than meets the eye.

I contacted Fox and WB, and as per usual SOP, they declined to comment. However, my inside source did verify that Kirk's Facebook page was legitimate, and had this to say:
Kirk wasn't 100% happy with the way he was used on the show and was somewhat vocal about it.
Lee Hernandez of Latina.com was able to contact Kirk directly, and got a little clarification on his original statement:
"It’s called not picking up my option. But at the end of the day, you got fired!"
So technically, he wasn't fired - he was "let go" (or "made redundant" for our UK fans :). You say potato and I say potahto - the bottom line is that he won't be a regular on the show anymore.

A lot of this has to do with saving money. Kirk had a prety minor role on the show, but from what I hear, he was makin getting paid more that Anna Torv! So while I am a huge fan of Kirk (we even share the same last name!), if they needed to cut the cast budget (maybe to accommodate Nimoy), I can understand why this happened.

The good news, if we read between the lines (and maybe because of all this coverage), is that there's a good chance that we'll see Charlie again - if everyone can kiss and makeup.

Fringe FAIL: Kirk Acevedo Fired!

      Email Post       5/20/2009 01:54:00 PM

Kirk Acevedo announced on his facebook page today that he was "fired" from Fringe:

WELL BOYS AND GIRLS THEY DONE DID YER BOY WRONG! THEY FIRED ME OFF OF FRINGE, AND I'VE NEVER BEEN FIRED IN MY LIFE!!!!

While this is not "officially" official, I have confirmed this with an inside source. Details are scarce at this point, but Kirk is likely another victim of the WB's cost-cutting measures. The move to Canada has caused quite a shake up on the show, with numerous behind-the-scenes people leaving as well. More info to come...

Fringe Moving To Thursday Nights This Fall

      Email Post       5/18/2009 01:05:00 PM

Fox announced their Fall 2009/ Spring 2010 schedule at yesterday's "upfront", and Fringe will be moving to Thursday nights, following Bones.

The good news is that it moves Fringe out of American Idol's wake, meaning no more cut off endings. The bad news of course, is that it won't get the ratings boost from AI (although Bones is no slouch), and it will step into the heavyweight ring, and could potentially be up against Grey's Anatomy, CSI, The Office, and/or 30 Rock.

The new Fringe ARG site Fox.com/Fringe/ThereIsMore was updated today, and the leaf symbol has now been activated.

Clicking on the leaf reveals a torn William Bell biography page.

William Bell, CEO & Chairman of Massive Dynamic - Since founding the company in 1992, William Bell has played a key role in every aspect of the business, from R&D to marketing. His personal vision continues to guide the firm's progress, and his ongoing research constantly yields new innovations and product lines. A seven-time honoree in Business Leaders Journal's list of The description of William Bell is the same as what can be found at on the MassiveDynamic website, however, MassiveDynamic.com has not yet been updated with a current picture.

Fringebusters 120: Science of There's More Than One Of Everything

      Email Post       5/13/2009 05:44:00 PM

For each episode of Fringe, Popular Mechanics asks experts to analyzes the science of Fringe, and separate the science fact from the science fiction.

For "The Road Not Taken," PM brings in Michio Kaku, physicist and author of Physics of the Impossible, to discuss Alternate Reality theory. According to Kaku:
There are numerous theories in physic that pertain to the existence of parallel universes—and Fringe is combining two of these theories. The first, called the "Many Worlds Theory," is widely accepted by theoretical physicists. "The universe splits every time a decision is made," Kaku explains. "One tiny quantum event could separate us from another reality." In "M-theory," on the other hand, our universe is an expanding membrane, sort of like a bubble—and there could be other bubbles out there. "These other universes, these bubbles, most of them are probably dead universes, so we don't have to worry about them,"

Walter's Lab Notes: There's More Than One Of Everything

      Email Post       5/13/2009 05:19:00 PM

Walter's Lab Notes from There's More Than One Of EverythingWalter's Lab Notes from There's More Than One Of Everything include the missing ZFT chapter of ethics, and a drawing from a young Peter Bishop, depicting some sort of experiment with William "Belly" Bell, and what looks a cow...?

Walter's notes explain the presence of the blueprints in previous Lab Notes - together they form a golden spiral, and at the center something is hidden - a hole in the universe?

Also in the notes:
  • The first quote "all mankind is of one author..." is from English poet John Donne's Meditation XVII, where the famous quote "No man is an island" comes from
  • The second quote is from The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, a "roman à clef" about mental illness
  • The third quote is from The Bells by Edgar Allen Poe.
  • S. S. Kresge refers to Sebastian Spering Kresge, a philanthropist best know for founding KMart. Kresge has many buildings named after him, including the Kresge building at Harvard, where Walter's Lab is located is in its basement.
  • The final quote "No, 'tis not so deep as a well.." one of the final lines of Mercurtio from Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo And Juliet.
All of Walter's Lab Notes from Season 1 can now also be found at FringeFiles.com

Fringe Episode Review: Season 1 Finale

      Email Post       5/13/2009 05:15:00 PM

Wow. What a way to end Fringe's sensational first season. In the tradition of the best television finales, There's More Than One Of Everything wrapped up a few mysteries, but asked twice as many questions. Major praise to Fringe vets Brad Anderson, Akiva Goldsman, Bryan Burk, Jeff Pinkner, and JH Wyman for crafting a real thriller, as well as the entire cast and crew (that poor, New York crew...) for a stellar first season. When's the last time a series was this promising after a single season?
"Jones always felt that he was special..."
I doubt I'm the only fan who will sorely miss Jared Harris' delightfully villainous David Robert Jones next season, but at least he went out with a bang. The finale revealed that Jones was one of Massive Dynamic's first employees, that he looked up to Bell as a kind of father figure, and that his wreckless bioterrorism has been an attempt to prove his worthiness to Bell.

Of course, this tells us more about William Bell than it does about Jones. Up until last week, we'd been led to believe Dr. Bell was the Big Bad in charge of ZFT, but now it looks like Jones took things into his own hands. Walter and Nina might be right about Bell's benevolence, despite the mountainous evidence to the contrary.

"I lost something very precious to me..."
Well we can finally put the clone theories to bed. Turns out the Peter we know isn't from our world. Peter Prime died in 1985, so Walter crossed over to steal a different Peter from the AR (alternate reality). The obvious question: is AR-Walter searching for his own Peter? Could that be the doppelganger we saw in St. Claire's?

Also, how did Peter die? Walter's often referred to Peter's childhood sickness, so I suppose we can assume that did it, but was his sickness a result of something Walter did? Or a result of Peter's specialness?

"William Bell is not in this world."
How mind-blowing was this? Nina's lines weren't the most tactful, but the concept is killer. The narrative possibilities in upcoming seasons are...endless! According to the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics (which Walter describes in The Road Not Taken), there isn't just one alternate reality, but an infinite number of them, based on every single causal possibility in space-time.

Which makes you wonder. What's so special about the AR Bell's hanging out in? Is it even the same one Olivia was glimpsing last week? I doubt it. And most importantly, is it the reality that the ZFT manifesto warns against? Our enemy in a trans-reality war?

I don't think so, but let's hear your theories in the comments. After all, the date on Bell's New York Post was May 12, 2009, and the ZFT manifesto warns against a reality "who's history is slightly advanced from our own.: My guess is that Bell's using this particular AR to accomplish something that will help us in the coming war against a different AR: the AR of the Observers.

Stray Thoughts
  • Best Walterism of the Night: Wait...there weren't really any good ones this week!
  • I absolutely loved Mr. Jones in this ep. He looked like a Batman supervillain.
  • Given Walter's amnesia in this ep and others, is it possible someone deliberately tried to erase parts of his memory? Or do we chalk it all up to madness?
  • Charlie's hat was great, as was his dogged pragmatism during all this alternate-reality talk.
  • Nondescript black vans are always a bad omen, kids.
  • Poor Boston. May 12th, and it's still the dead of winter! I know, I know...they shot this months ago.
  • Anna was really beautiful this ep. Not that she isn't every week!
  • President Kennedy's alive! Along with Len Bias! Yet the stock market is closed, and the White House was apparently destroyed. Are we to assume that Flight 93 hit its target in Bell's AR, but the planes headed for the WTC didn't? Could the Pattern experiments we saw on airplaines this season have been trial runs for preventing the Twin Towers' destruction in Bell's AR? I'm really stretching now...
  • I could feel JJ cringing at the expositionary dialogue in this ep to catch up new viewers! A necessary evil.
  • Give Michael Giacchino an Emmy for this score.
  • Leonard Nimoy sure looked happy!

  • David Robert Jones' role in the grand scheme of things will become much clearer.

  • Dunham will make a discovery that changes our perspective on the Pattern.

New Viral Website For Fringe - There Is More

      Email Post       5/11/2009 09:48:00 PM

A new mysterious glowing yellow dot has appeared on Fox's Official Fringe website, down towards the bottom next to the BIOS section. Hovering over the yellow dot will open up the "wormhole" to a new video and viral site. I've hidden rest of this post if you'd like to check it out yourself first, then come back here and...

Hovering over the yellow dot play a small video montage with a voice over of William Bell:
“Is the incident contained?”
“Yes Dr. Bell.”
“How bad?”
“Bad!”
At the end of the video there is a hand holding a large coin. After the video plays, click the yellow area again, and a new site will open up - Fox.com/fringe/ThereIsMore.

There are eight sections to the site, each represented by braille code, which translates to numbers from the Fibonacci sequence - 144, 89, 55, 34, 21, 13, 8, & 5. Clicking on each of the numbers displays different Fringe symbols: Embryo Apple, Delta Leaf, Six-fingered Hand, Phi Frog, Wing Daisy, Golden-Spiral Seahorse, Bones Butterfly, and Phi Sheep Horn.

The only glyph that is currently active is the Apple, which will display the golden spirals when you hover over it, and if you click it, it will displays a Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin (and the braille for "return"). Clicking the coin plays a quote from Nicholas Boone (seen in Midnight) saying: "How Far Would You Go?"

One other fun thing to look at is when you click on 89 (braille #2), listen very closely and you can hear a strange voice. The voice, if played backwards says "Expand Your Consciousness"

You can hear the original and reversed sound below.

Original:

Reversed:

BTW, for those that haven't been here from the beginning, the site is a rehash of the original Fringe viral site initially at ImagineTheImpossibilities.com (which currently holds the CASE 0091 website) In fact, digging through the flash files reveals a bunch of legacy stuff from the old site, e.g. the old Fringe viral radio ads. I suspect they will replace all the old content as they activate each new glyph in the coming days...

JJ Abrams Interview

      Email Post       5/11/2009 03:09:00 PM

The King of Media himself, JJ Abrams, spoke with a handful of journalists (including one of our own) on Friday about Fringe. Specifically, this week's finale and what to expect in Season 2 (no specific spoilers). Here's the audio from the call:

We got to ask two questions, including one of your own! Here's the transcript from our part of the call:

(At the 10:30 mark)
Adam Morgan
All of your projects feature very strong-willed, independent females like Olivia Dunham. Who or what is your inspiration for those characters?
JJ AbramsI would like to think that I've been luck enough to work on projects that have strong-willed characters who happen to be male or female, and in the case of characters like Kate or Sydney Bristow, and certainly Olivia Dunham, those are females that hopefully pop because they are interesting and strong-willed, but I could also point to certain male characters that have the same things. I guess the answer is that I don't really try to write characters that are strong women, I just try to write, when I can, strong characters, and if they happen to be women, they happen to be women.

And in my life, I've got the most spectacular wife in Katie McGrath. She is probably the strongest and best influence on me that I've ever had. And I would say that it's no coincidence that it was after I met her that I wrote Felicity, mostly because she reminded me to write about stuff that I actually care about again. It had been a while. But her strength, and her amazing ability to not only immediately understand right and wrong, but she's amazingly capable of articulating that position. And she's very socially active and politically minded, and fights the good fight, and she's someone who is definitely an inspiration, who happens to be a woman.
(At the 25:10 mark)

Adam Morgan
By the way, I saw Trek last night, and I'm going again tonight. I loved it.
JJ AbramsGod bless you, sir. Thank you very much.
Adam Morgan
Anyway, now that we've seen Charlie and Broyles in this alternate reality, do you think we might run into, say, a still-breathing John Scott over there?
JJ Abrams
I would say that it would be very difficult now that "John Scott's" show got picked up.
Adam Morgan
Ooo, that's right.
JJ Abrams
But having said that, I'm very excited that it got picked up. And I do think that there will be some very interesting things happening, given this "other place" that you're referring to. And again, that's part of the fun of the show, and I hope one of the aspects of the show that makes it incredibly unique. Meaning, my favorite kinds of ideas are the things that we work on that make me think, "there's no other show on television that could do that wierd thing." That's my favorite kind of an idea. And I just think that if you don't go for those, then the show becomes increasingly mundane and disposable. But the more you can do some of those things, even if they don't work, to try and do those things that feel specifically "that show." Anyway, there are some things with that "other place" that I think will feel uniquely "Fringe."

Two new pieces of the Fibonacci spiral this week, plus some other goodies:
  • Walter reasserts that it was William Bell who wrote the Manifesto (the typewriter was better-suited to his long fingers).
  • He compares the Chapter of Ethics to the Gospel of Judas again, convinced that it will prove Bell innocent.
  • He alludes to mythological "firestarters," such as Prometheus, Mixcoatl, Surt, and Vulcan.
  • He deplores himself for being unable to answer Olivia's questions in the coffee shop, and vows to jump-start his memory using his old record collection.
  • Walter prefers Chicago over Delta Blues!

Fringe Episode Review: The Road Not Taken

      Email Post       5/09/2009 12:26:00 AM

Sorry for the delay on this review, but May (like December), is when all things happen at once.

Since Fringe returned on April 7th with Inner Child, we've gotten one great ep after another, and the roller coaster continued this week with The Road Not Taken, a brilliant serial-procedural hybrid that featured several compelling mysteries, Emmy-worthy performances, and some real pay-offs for devoted fans. Oh, and some shameless cross-promotion for a little movie that came out this week.

"Blonde girl about 5'7. Really well-done. Melted fillings."
Spontaneous human combustion? Nah. That was The X-Files. This is Fringe.
So Susan Pratt and Nancy Lewis were part of the same Cortexiphan trials as Olivia and Nick Drake. It looks like Cortexiphan affects more than just perception! Sure, Liv can see into alternate realities, but she, along with this week's twins, can also excite molecules until they conflagrate. What other kinds of mind-tricks are ZFT recruits capable of? And why did William Bell think these super soldiers were necessary to win the imminent inter-reality war?

"Each choice we make creates a new reality."
Walter confirmed it: Fringe doesn't just take place in our own universe, but in the meta-universe. The world we've occupied since the Pilot is only one path of causality, out of an infinite number of possible timelines, akin to Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics.

The narrative implications are endless. Is there an alternate Boston where John Scott is still alive? Where Peter and Walter weren't rescued from drowning by the Observer? Where history as we know it is remarkably different? That certainly seems to be the case with the reality Olivia glimpses in The Road Not Taken. Here's everything I noticed about it:

Dell is still a ubiquitous computer manufacturer. Everyone wears kevlar. Things are...bluer. There seems to be no trash pickup. Lots of graffiti. Lots of smoke and fire. The FBI communicates via red bat-phones. Kirk Acevedo is mean. And scarred. And giving shoot-to-kill orders. The city of Boston is being both evacuated and quaratined (which seems a contradiction).

My biggest question about Olivia's visions: is this reality the one with whom ZFT prophecizes a war? The one they created super soldiers to fight? If so, I'm confused. Where do the Observers fit in? And what's so special about this particular alternate reality, when there are an infinite number of them in the meta-universal manifold?

"William Bell is not the enemy."
Look out, we've got another Ambiguously Powerful Figure from JJ Abrams, the same man who brought us Arvin Sloane and Benjamin Linus. All of Season 1, the writers have establish Bell as a morally corrupt Man Behind the Curtain of Massive Dynamic, the Pattern, and now ZFT. But in The Road Not Taken, both Nina Sharp and Walter defend Bell's character, assuring viewers that he's been misrepresented.

Who do we trust? Will the apocryphal Chapter of Ethics really prove Bell's innocence? I have a feeling Bell's intentions may be benevolent, but his means, unethical. Maybe we'll find out in next week's finale. And if Bell's not evil, who's responsible for ripping out the Chapter of Ethics and corrupting ZFT? Mr. Jones?

Stray Thoughts
  • Best Walterism of the Night: "When he was five, he built me a popsicle napkin-holder. Dreadful design. Utterly useless."
  • How slick is Lance Reddick? The man could kill someone with a glance.
  • Interesting cameo from Clint Howard. I imagine Akiva Goldsman talked him into it. Did this shameless Trek plug bother anyone?
  • How many of you cheered when Sanford Harris went up in flames?
  • Blair Brown was awesome as Nina Sharp in this ep, and I think John Noble deserves an Emmy for this performance. The coffee-shop scene particularly.
  • Nina seems to be limping all of a sudden. Just how much of her is robotic, do you think?
  • Nice to see Astrid out of the lab! Get that girl a gun next season.
  • I liked the return of the light box. Here's hoping we see ZFT Test #2 next year.

Could Fringe Be An Emmy Contender?

Could Fringe Be An Emmy Contender? The LA Times' awards blog "The Envelope", has an interesting article discussing the possibilities of Fringe joining "the Emmy Mainstream". It's certainly not unprecedented, with other "genre" shows such as LOST and X-Files taking home Emmys in the past.

The deadline for nominations is not until May 31, and the Fringe season finale which airs next Tuesday could be the best episode yet.

According to Jason Hughes of TV Squad: "Fringe is one of the best hours on television right now, and it could well be poised to be one of the all-time greats!"

What do you think about an Emmy (or two or three) for Fringe? Outstanding Drama Series? John Noble for best supporting Actor?
