Fringe Observiews 4.14 The End Of All Things

      Email Post       3/02/2012 10:17:00 AM

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

Screen caps from this episode are taken from fringefiles.com. Dialog is from fringepedia.net/transcripts.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…

4.01 Neither Here Nor There
OLIVIA: “Well, sometimes answers lead to more questions.”

Uh, you can say that again.

Glyphs spelled: UNITE
As in Olivia and Peter unite? As in timelines unite?

The Observers are throughout the episode
I will get back to them as they appear.

Last week’s episode ended with both Nina and Olivia held captive.
As we open this week’s we find Peter and Lincoln in Olivia’s apartment, looking for anything that could tell them what happened to her. And is Lincoln jealous?
AGENT LEE: “Right, he [Walter] thinks that you've been somehow projecting your Olivia onto her, that she's assuming the memories and personality of the Olivia from your timeline.”
PETER: “Is any of this relevant right now?”
AGENT LEE: “It is to me. She's my partner. And if that's true, think about what you're doing to her. Unintentionally or not, you are robbing her of her identity, her life. She is not your Olivia, Peter.”
PETER: “And what if she is?” I guess we’ll get back to that later.
AGENT LEE: “You know that's impossible. Yet you still let her continue working the case, knowing that she was under your influence, that she wasn't herself. I don't know you that well, but I'd like to think you weren't ignoring her safety for personal reasons…”

And Peter seems to ignore Lincoln but he found a camera.
Olivia had been watched as we know from 4.07 Wallflower. Leland (now that we know his name) was making sure the camera worked.
I thought it interesting that the camera Peter found is in a totally different spot than from where Leland had worked on it in the previous picture.
Continuity mistake or was the camera moved as to not cause suspicion?

Meanwhile

NINA SHARP: “Well, they came for me in the middle of the night, when I was asleep. They grabbed me. Before they put the bag over my head, I saw her stepping out of the shadows behind them. It was me, Olive. I mean, she looked exactly like me.”
OLIVIA: “So it wasn't you that I saw in your office a few weeks ago? You didn't come to my apartment to help me when I was sick?”
NINA SHARP: “No, I’m sorry, sweetheart. I wish I could say that it was. I've been so worried about you. You know, all the time they've held me here, he still hasn't told me what he's after.”

That’s actually true in a sense, Olivia. You have not seen this Nina at your house or the office.

Let’s just call her fake Nina for now,
is who did show up at Olivia’s apartment to witness the dosing with Cortexiphan in 4.07 Wallflower. And as I said in one of my theories from last week, I also believe she went and replaced the Cortexiphan at MD.

When Olivia was sick in 4.10 Forced Perception and she told Nina about the migraines, Nina looked puzzled
and it makes sense now because she really had no idea what was happening. I also believe all the times Olivia went to see Nina at the office, she spoke with the real Nina.

Enter David Robert Jones!
DAVID JONES: “Olivia Dunham. I've waited so very long to meet you.”
OLIVIA: “Actually, we've already met.”
1.07 In Which We Meet Mr. Jones: “What a pleasure this is.”
DAVID JONES: “You have me at a bit of a disadvantage.”
OLIVIA: “I watched you die. And I'm looking forward to seeing you do that again.”
1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything.
Jones was trying to cross over to kill Bell. After Olivia was not successful with shooting him (because using Walter’s device made him special) Peter plugged the portal, cutting Jones in half.

LELAND SPIVEY: “Maybe confusion's an unforeseen side effect.”
DAVID JONES: “I'm a bit confused myself. She's not the first to say that to me.”
4.09 Enemy Of My Enemy
PETER: “When you were crossing out of your universe into this one. You created a - a doorway, a portal. I’m the man who closed it on you. It cut you right in half.”

OLIVIA: “A side effect from what? What does he mean?” Jones is of course talking about the migraines. Olivia: “What the hell did you do to me?”
DAVID JONES: “Nothing... that wasn't already done to you a long time ago.
But then... you were just a child. Doctor Bishop's notes from the Cortexiphan Trial were quite clear. The subjects' abilities were triggered by sparks of intense emotions, hmm?”

3.15 Subject 13
WALTER: “William, I need your help. I have reason to believe Subject 13, Olivia Dunham, has been able to cross over to the other side. But I believe that young Olivia may need to be in some kind of heightened emotional state to access her ability. I'm compiling some recordings on my new betamax. Perhaps you'll be able to see something I cannot.”

Damn you Walter, why did you write things down?

So Jones thinks by torturing Nina he would activate Olivia’s abilities.
Mwahaha! Is he in for a treat!

Apparently December and the rest of the gang are not happy with September’s actions.
It reminded me of 2.15 Peter when the Observers stood together and 2.08 August as they discussed mistakes that were made.

In the meantime Nina is being questioned by Broyles. He answers her question whether he knows if Olivia is alright with the same question directed at Nina.
NINA: “How can you ask me that? I raised Olivia as if she was my own daughter.”

I still wonder if and what the Nina in our timeline meant when she said that to Olivia in 1.01 The Pilot.
NINA: “You should know what you're getting into, Agent Dunham. I would say this to my own daughter: "Be careful and good luck."”

NINA: “Phillip, you know me. Do you honestly believe that I’ve been dosing Olivia with Cortexiphan, that I could have had anything to do with her disappearance?”

This is not the first time Nina was accused of being responsible for Olivia’s disappearance. And wouldn’t you know it, it also had something to do with David Robert Jones.
1.10 Safe
NINA: "Phillip! That’s enough. Now you know how I feel about Agent Dunham. Why would I want any harm to come to her? Now, what do we know about who may have taken her? – And why?"
-David Robert Jones had Olivia taken by Mitchell Loeb to find out if she was given Cortexiphan.

As the conversation between Nina and Broyles continues, we discover that there might be two Ninas’ and one of them is not a shapeshifter because the other one would be dead.  We also discover that the real Nina is the one showing Walter and Lincoln the Cortexiphan and as I said earlier the fake Nina went and replaced it.

Back at the lab.
I absolutely love Walter food. I will have to try “sprinkled toast” pretty soon.

Peter is hoping to find something on the chip from the camera in Olivia’s apartment. But the chances are very slim according to Walter.
PETER: “Thanks for the encouragement, Walter.”
Walter has such a great way to be uplifting. He did the same to Astrid in 3.06 6955 kHz when she couldn’t decipher the code. WALTER: “But you can't. That's your problem.”
ASTRID: “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

WALTER: “I warned you not to succumb to temptation, Peter.
Whatever consciousness Olivia appears to be manifesting now, she is not who you think she is.”
PETER: “You don't know that.”

It seems like we’ve been in this situation before. 3.08 Entrada
WALTER: “And I have no idea how to bring our Olivia back. It's all because of that temptress. She tricked my son with her carnal manipulations and he fell right into her vagenda.”

When Walter was talking about a “palimpsest”, I asked myself the same question Astrid voiced.
WALTER: “A manuscript page from a scroll or book from which the text has been scraped off, which means it can be used again.”

Back at the torture chamber Leland takes Nina with him as Jones stays with Olivia.
Jones gives Olivia a better view of where Nina was taken.
OLIVIA: “Oh, my God.”

Maybe this is a weird callback but it reminded me of when she saw the bomb in 1.14 Ability. Her reaction was the same.
He even brought the box.
He wants her to turn the lights on.
OLIVIA: “We did something like this before. You were trying to activate my ability to cross between universes. And since you seem perfectly capable of doing that yourself, what is this about?”

In 1.14 Ability he wanted her to turn the lights off to defuse the bomb.
DAVID JONES: “Whatever you know, Miss Dunham, whatever you think you know of your abilities, I assure you... your potential is... far greater.”
If it’s not her ability to cross over that he needs, what then? These are her other powers that we know of so far:
Super hearing 2.02 Night Of Desirable Objects (or was that just residual from crossing over?)
Photographic memory as Fauxlivia points out in 3.02 The Box (I believe that ability was developed because of the Cortexiphan trials and because she was predisposed)
Telekinesis as demonstrated in 1.14 Ability, bending things with her mind in 3.21 The Last Sam Weiss, turning off the machine in the other universe from this universe and moving objects with her mind as demonstrated in 3.22 The Day We Died.
Pyrokinesis as Leland had to experience later in this episode.

So same question: What does Jones want from Olivia?

Olivia is trying to turn the lights on.
But even with the sparks flying, torturing Nina,
nothing happens.
Think, Dunhamnator!

OLIVIA: “I can't. Please stop. I ca -- I just can't right now. I'm - I’m tired, and I just need rest.”
There you go, buying time.

Back at the lab, Astrid and Peter are still trying to get info from the chip when all of a sudden both Astrid and Walter have to go pee?
So (here is me making a fool out of myself because I haven’t looked at anything else posted anywhere since the episode aired) was this the clue?
4.13 A Better Human Being
OLIVIA: “I just gotta go pee.”

WALTER: “Clearly he [Leland] works for that harridan Nina.”
PETER: “It's who Nina's working for that worries me. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out -- why would Nina be dosing Olivia with Cortexiphan? But then it occurred to me. The only person who's ever done anything like that, at least in my timeline, was David Robert Jones. Maybe he's trying to do the same thing again.”
Uh, Peter must be talking about the tests because I’m pretty sure I would remember if Jones ever dosed Olivia with Cortexiphan.

WALTER: “Do what?”
PETER: “Activate Olivia.”
WALTER: “For what purpose?”
PETER: “I don't know. We could never figure it out. But maybe it's for the same reasons now.”
THE OBSERVER: “Yes. His goal is the same.”
I also really want to know what that goal is!

PETER: “What do you know about David Robert Jones? What do you know about Olivia?”
THE OBSERVER: “She needs you.”

Loved Walter’s guessing about the Observer’s physiology, if he has lungs and that Walter had no reason to doubt himself since Peter told him in his timeline that their physiology is the same as humans.

Lincoln calls and tells them that the Nina they are questioning is not cooperating.

Olivia and Nina are back together in the holding cell.
Olivia asks Nina to help activate her that her abilities only work when her emotions are in a heightened state.
Shouldn’t Nina know that?

Nina shares the story of how Olivia and Rachel came to live with her so Olivia can make a connection because the Cortexiphan is blocking that right now.

Or at least that’s what Olivia says. Has this been a trap for Nina all along? Did Olivia suspect something already?

OLIVIA: “And I kept calling you ‘Ms Sharp’.”
NINA SHARP: “Yes, you did. That's true. And I told you that you didn't need to worry, that we were a family now... and that whatever happened, we had each other. And we'd be okay. And I - I kissed you on the forehead. I kissed you good night, and you called me "Nina"... that was the first time you'd ever done that.”
OLIVIA: “I can only remember pieces... Just fragments. It's like looking at a photo album of somebody else's life. This isn't going to work. I don't want them to keep hurting you, but... the only person that this has ever worked with is Peter.”
NINA SHARP: “Peter Bishop?”
OLIVIA: “The Cortexiphan, my abilities-- it's only ever worked when I've been around him.”

Olivia knew then that something was wrong. I believe she gave up Peter’s name because she knows it works with him. And that was the only way to escape. At least that’s what she knows from the memories she has in her head right now.

And as on queue Nina fakes to be sick. They get her out and she reports to Jones.
Let’s call her “Meana” from now on, shall we. So was she really tortured or did she just act?

Back in the lab, Broyles shares that the Observer came to Olivia in the opera house (4.08 Back To Where You’ve Never Been), telling her that she had to die.
The only way to find out where Olivia was is through the Observer’s mind.
So Walter prepares the mind-melt cocktail.
Just like in 1.01 The Pilot when Olivia entered John Scott’s mind.
Peter is being prepared.
And as Walter said to Olivia in 1.01 The Pilot: “And this will rip open your consciousness.”
So Peter is ready to enter the Observer’s mind
just like Olivia did with John in 1.01 The Pilot.
I think I finally realized the reason it says Mr. X and not September on there.
Our team doesn't actually know the Observer’s name. Peter finds out later.

This whole scene “in the sky” was done so beautifully that no matter how I present it here, I won’t be able to do it justice.

The beginning of all things…
THE OBSERVER: “I am called "September"
but that is a code designation given to members of our scientific team…We are you-- we're human... Many generations after your lifetime. We are one of countless possible futures for humanity. Our technology has uniquely afforded us the ability to travel within and outside of time so that we may observe our beginnings.”
“It was my attempt to rectify the mistake I made. Your real father...
Developing the cure that would have saved your life but in my desire to witness the moment, I inadvertently distracted him from discovering it.” (2.15 Peter)
“You are important. It was why I could not allow you to drown at the bottom of Reiden Lake…
why it was necessary to allow the other Dr. Bishop to cure you instead. (2.15 Peter)
Despite my efforts to set things right, these actions only culminated in further corruption of the timeline.
(left to right: 3.22 The Day We Died, 2.22 Over There Part 2, 3.21 The Last Sam Weiss)

The war between the two universes drastically altered destinies and brought about a child that was not meant to be. (3.20 6:02 AM EST)
He was born to the wrong Olivia Dunham due to a series of circumstances that never should have happened. This event... would have irrevocably altered everything that was to come.”
PETER: “Henry. I have a son.”
THE OBSERVER: “Had. When you made the sacrifice to step into that machine, you were not the only one who ceased to exist. So would he. I believed at the time that would be the end of it. I cannot explain, but it is clear that I was wrong. You have managed to return in physical form. I suspect...
This will provide an opportunity for you to put things right. She is the one...  The Olivia Dunham from whom your shared future was meant to spring. This must be, and everything will be as it was intended (3.19 LSD). You must find a way... they are coming.”
PETER: “I'm not doing anything till you tell me where to find Olivia—“
THE OBSERVER: “For that, you have only to go home.”
PETER: “I know that I have to go home. I know I have to get back to my timeline, but I'm talking about this Olivia in this timeline.”
THE OBSERVER: “Go home.”
As the Observer told Peter to go home I was thinking back to 3.06 6955 kHz.
Projection Peter had appeared to Olivia who was still stuck on the other side.
PETER: “You have to get out of here… It's not safe for you here anymore, Olivia. You have to go home.”
And then of course Peter woke up.

First you see him,
and then you don’t.
Just as he appeared in the lab, so he disappeared. The knocked over table is what I take as a sign that September is still alive.

PETER: “He just kept on saying how I needed to get back to my timeline and my Olivia.”
AGENT LEE: “Your Olivia and our Olivia? I thought they were one and the same to you.”
Well?

The Observer had told Peter to “go home”. Peter decided to go to his house to see if Olivia is there. But bad boy Leland was waiting for him instead.
They take Peter to where Olivia is held. The lights in the hallway flicker to the same beat as in
1.01 The Pilot when Olivia and John look through the trash.
They also flicker like that in 3.14 6B as Olivia is trying to convince Alice to let go.

So Jones’s incentive this time is Peter. But Olivia was hoping for that.
So Olivia starts turning lights on. And then some.

DAVID JONES: “Impressive. What are you doing, Olivia?”
OLIVIA: “I'm doing what you wanted. I'm turning on the lights.”
Which falls in to the category of” be careful what you wish for”!

NINA SHARP: “What? No, Olivia, don't.”
OLIVIA: “You're not Nina.”
NINA SHARP: “What are you talking about?”
OLIVIA: “My high-school graduation -- you told me that now I was an adult. I was no longer allowed to call you 'Ms Sharp'. That was the first time I called you 'Nina'.”
You go, girl!

But she doesn’t stop there.
Leland’s gonna get it.
No one messes with the Dunhamnator!

Olivia pretty weak after that display goes and rescues Peter.

PETER: “Olivia. How did you do that? How did you know how to concentrate your power?”
OLIVIA: “Well, I, uh -- I didn't. I just know that... when I was a little girl, I did something similar, and that if they brought you to me, then you might give me what I needed to do it again. Okay. Come on.”

Is it the memory from 2.14 Jacksonville
or the memory from 3.15 Subject 13 she was referring to?

As they chase after Jones and “Meana”, Olivia is having a seizure.
She’s never had a seizure before after displaying her powers. But I was thinking back to 3.19 LSD when she was occupied by Bell, she had one also.

Anyway, Jones has an escape plan. He opens a portal.
It’s kind of funny that there is an “exit” sign right above where it opened.

“Meana” has already stepped through as Peter and Olivia catch up with them.
DAVID JONES: “That was quite a display you put on in there, Miss Dunham. Your love for this man must be something quite profound.”

Of course when Olivia is asking him to step away from the portal he just keeps walking. So she shoots him right through the Adams apple.
The last time Olivia mad a shot like that was in 3.12 Concentrate And Ask Again.
And of course this scene of shooting Jones in front of a portal resembles 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything.
And unfortunately, just like then, that is not stopping Jones.
DAVID JONES: “Good-bye for now, Agent Dunham. It would seem there are some fringe benefits to having one's body reassemble at an atomic level.”
DAVID JONES: “The teleporter, it may be killing me, but in the meantime, it's made me something rather special. You see, your bullets just go right through me.” (1.20 There is More Than One Of Everything)
Ha, I had to laugh when I heard him say “fringe benefits”. Fringe is everywhere, even on your W-2.
As they leave, Olivia becomes dizzy again.
OLIVIA: “It's okay. I'm feeling better now. I guess all the energy that I expended did a number on my nervous system.”
This end scene reminded me a lot of 3.09 Marionette. This time the roles are reversed though.
Peter suggests that it might be him causing the seizures.

PETER: “I saw her. I saw my Olivia -- the one that I am supposed to be with, the only one that I'm supposed to be with.”
OLIVIA: “Peter, I don't understand what's happening to me any more than you do. But that doesn't change what I do know, what you know -- that if you look at me -- if you -- if you look -- if you look into my eyes, then you can see that I am her.”
PETER: No. No, you have her memories, or you have my memories of her. You're a projection or -- I don't know what. But when I looked into your eyes, what I saw was what I wanted to see. I know she's out there... my Olivia, in my timeline, waiting for me. And I let myself forget that, so I’m sorry, Olivia.
And I'll be sure that Walter can fix you up somehow and give you back your life. But for right now, I think it's better if I just stay away.
3.08 Entrada bidding farewell to Fauxlivia.
OLIVIA: “Okay, Peter, I – I - I'm in love with you, and I - I can't just -- just turn that off now. I don't want to lose you. W - where are you going?”
PETER: “Home. I have to go home.”

2.10 Grey Matters
OLIVIA:  “So all we have is more questions.”
BROYLES: “I suspect that's the way this is going to be. The more answers we get, the more questions they'll lead to.”
OLIVIA: “We didn't get any answers.”
BROYLES: “Sure we did.”

We learned who the Observer’s are.
We learned what happened to Henry.
We learned more about Olivia’s powers.

But we still don’t know

Who shot September? Why is Peter important? What does Jones want from Olivia? What happened to September? Why did “Meana” have a robotic arm, or was that just an act as well? Olivia has photographic memory (Cortexiphan or not), was she just pretending not remembering?
And I’m sure I’m forgetting more questions.

And the biggest one of all:
Yes or no?

Shout out to all the cast but especially Josh and Anna. I've seen the episode 10 times and am still glued to the TV. Their emotions were right on.

Fringe returns March 23rd!

Cortexifan: (or anyone)
Do you happen to know the episode origin (if any) of the shot of Olivia when September is saying "She is the one... The Olivia Dunham from whom your shared future was meant to spring."? It's the shot just above where you placed this quote and is during Peter's Observer mind trip. Could be a clue or maybe just another misdirection (been a lot of those lately). Thanks again.

milostanfield,
I'm sorry I forgot to give the reference. It's the end of 3.19 LSD where she draws Mr. X.

Very good and complete this work cortexifan, thank you. I read with great attention all that his account, and I am becoming more convinced: somehow the whole story of Fringe, is being retold. In the first season, the key person was Olivia. She was the one who decided, guided the actions formed the Fringe team, said "yes" to love Peter, exceeded universes to pick it up, and so on. Now, Peter is, Olivia, as before. Peter now runs the actions he has the action initiatives, now is he who saves Olivia, Peter decisions now are adopted without many questions. Again, Peter now, Olivia is as before. Even in love, the roles were reversed. Now the love affair between the two depends on the "yes", Peter! I'm watching Fringe now, as if everything that is happening now, is a kind of "how would that be if we reverse the situation?". The concept of a palimpsest?! Based on everything that has been presented in Fringe, now it all seems very rich, very new, just, very interesting in these current events in the Fringe universe, no doubt.

Thoughts:

- Now we have two Nina Sharp. One toward the William Bell, and other, more active, on the side of Mr. Jones;

- I see "multiple" Olivias. The amberOlivia, the Fauxlivia and Olivia "now". This Olivia "now", should be more "leader", that amberOlivia, I think." And, as things are changing, the Faulivia may become Fauxlivia "now" that "had", or "has" a child with Peter (pure conjecture);

- Also see the "home" Peter, "returning" to it gradually. He definitely is in its "home", just not aware of the above, though;

- Peter, learned, through September, about having a child with Fauxlivia, and this should promote some changes in his behavior in relation to it, I see. Take care, Olivia ...

The observer just said that Peter had a baby with the wrong Olivia not that amberolivia is the wrong one. The Olivia that Peter has to have a baby with has to be with a Olivia that can cross universes and has cortexaphan related abilities because that baby will be able to time travel, cross universes and have other abilities like teleconthesis (season 3 finale Olivia had that)....and we see where this is going....Peter and cortexaphan blue olivia will produce a baby that is the observer or something like that. The observers could be descendents from blue Henry not red Henry.

Peter was just written very badly this episode. Not sticking up for himself with Walter and Lincoln, not asking the simple question of the observer if this was his timeline, if this was his olivia, what DRJ wants or plans?

All important questions that were missed because the writers are playing this out to the series finale.

Here's something I never understood... if Peter was meant to survive why didn't september instead of not saving him from drowning just didn't interrupt Walternative in the first place?

FilippoCova said...

I think that olivia is the peter's one because peter was able to return in physical form and he did it in this time line to fix mistakes of past,as september said, so when he came back he did in the correct time line but he refuse to belive that the olivia stands in front of him is his olivia

Cortexifan, I've been reading your observiews and they are always wonderful, pretty heavy in details. Thanks!.

In regards to this: "She’s never had a seizure before after displaying her powers. But I was thinking back to 3.19 LSD when she was occupied by Bell, she had one also."

I think we could add these ones as well:

"1.13 The Transformation" after she shared consciousness with John (bra & panties tank)

"1.17 Bad Dreams" when she was inside Nick Lane's mind and Peter had to helped her calm down.

"2.04 Momentum Deferred" after crossing universes she got loads of information entering her brain at once (only the momentum was displaced)

I believe that Olivia's overlapped memories are being scratch when in contact with Peter, and that's why she had that seizure at the near end. Because her brain is being re-written in a second (flashes) and she's adjusting to them.

But I have to disagree with Olivia, when she says that her abilities have only worked when Peter is around. What about the pyrokinesis when she was little; crossing over is something she has been doing alone; also when she had that super audio amplifier after crossing universes; and in the future, when she controlled her telekinesis on a full scale. Just a thought.

I think as Zepp mentioned above, that Olivia is the key from the beginning, she is the outcome that scientist like Walter, Bell and Jones have been looking for, hoping to find the "perfect creation". From the beginning she found the way to get Walter and Peter together to find her answers, and now she is gonna be the one who unites them again with her bond to Peter. I think we are going to see some Dunhamnator action for the rest of the season (hopefully because Peter alone could find his way back to the bathroom at this point).

I think Olivia's abilities worked when she was a kid when a boy she was emotionally connected to seemed to be injured or hurt or something along those lines. Now in this universe or timeline the only person who she is close or emotionally close to is Peter, well close to since her memories have come back. So there is that, I suppose and also all the other cortexaphan kids who shared the same experiences with her. There is a bond and so that is why they were able to cross, I think Peter needs to be gone....not much of an arc for him.

I think that there is only 'One timeline' although now and then Peter talks about the 'timeline' as if the people he is with are not the ones from his memories. The truth of the matter is that since there is only one timeline then the people he is with are the same as from his memories the difference is that they have a different past. Once he realises this, then he can continue with his life and let go of this ridiculous idea that they is actually two time-lines as the series suggest now and then. The series it seems they have not made up their minds whether or not there are Two or just One timeline. Please someone explain this.
