FringeBusters 208: August

      Email Post       11/24/2009 12:16:00 AM

Fringe Photos: For each episode of Fringe, Popular Mechanics asks experts to analyzes the science of Fringe, and separate the science fact from the science fiction.

For "August," PM consults etymologist Rex Curry about deciphering ancient codes and symbols to see how (and if) it can be done.
Fringe got its facts right: Language does require repetition, and cracking complex codes requires some sort of key that compares codes to another language. For now, it seems that Astrid and her Fringe compatriots are out of luck when it comes to unlocking the mysteries inside the Observer's notebook.

Fans on Fringe 1

      Email Post       11/24/2009 12:14:00 AM

As someone who spends a lot of time in the FringeTelevision chat room I've had the privilege of listening to a lot of theories and opinions. I've seen everything from predictions that "Peter is dead" to "Olivia was a test subject of William Bell" come true. Talking with some of the chat room participants after the episode this is what I was able to dig up:

Stoyline Pacing
When asked about the current pacing of the Fringe storyline, the feeling seems to be that it is progressing a little slowly. A lot of standalone episodes paired with only minor developments of the meta-plot are making fans chomp at the bit for more plot development. Last episode "August" was encouraging however, with the feeling that the dry spell may finally be over. To quote FrankSwanzo when asked about pacing: "For this season? Poorly, Ive felt that the first 4 episodes should have been sped up a little, and now with episode 8 we're finally getting some movement."

With the next episode "Snakehead" looking to be another standalone, I'm concerned that the tipping point and rush towards the finale that the fans are hoping for may not come until after Christmas holidays.

As a stark contrast, when asked about the pacing of "August" everyone responded positively: "t was fast! I mean I looked over at the clock and saw it was 9:40 and I was shocked. I wish the episodes were longer, but fast is good I guess... it means it keeps you on your seat and not bored," said Vinylfreak89. Continuing this trend, Jennifer (Observer101) said: "A lot better, filled with mythology and a very fast moving, action pace. The kinds of episodes I look forward to."

Character Development
Character development seems to be one of the strong points of the Fringe writers. Always revealing just enough to make the characters feel human and fully realized, they never spill the beans and leave us with nothing to spend the week questioning. Those fans I spoke to appear to really appreciate the new developments, even if they're wondering where the new Agent from episode 1 of this season went to.

"They're doing a great job of getting characters out of their shells that they were put in to last season. I was really glad to see Walter and Peter move this season, and I think that along with Astrid getting out of the lab are really big developments," commented Vinylfreak89. Frank Swanzo agreed, wanting to see Astrid and Broyles get more screen time.

Meanwhile, Olivia's abilities have not manifested since she reappeared in her normal reality. Observer101 says: "The writers' have done a great job with finding the balance of it but I do feel like they need to focus more on Olivia. We were left hanging about her abilities and I for one want to find out more."

Favorite Scene in episode "August"
One of the more popular scenes with those I chatted with concerning their favorite scene in August was Walter meeting with with Observer we're now calling August. Walter's fear of Peter being taken from him once again shows us actor John Noble's incredible ability to make such a wacky character (the shows obvious comic relief) also become one of its most human. You can't help but feel that Walter is really the soul of the show.

FrankSwanzo took a different tack, "Why the girl was important after all. Because she was involved with the Death of 'One of Us'".

When asked about their favorite scene in fringe to date, those I spoke with were all drawn to Olivia's meeting in the twin towers. For Vinylfreak89, just seeing the twin towers had impact, showing him just how different this other reality could be. For FrankSwanzo it was William's warning to Olivia about physics that took the cake, while to Observer101 the meeting was a hint about why Broyles chose Olivia to be part of the Fringe Division.

Observations of Observers
If you're like me, then finding the Observer in an episode reminds you of the frustrating "Where's Waldo?" books that haunted your childhood. A great many people are seen to pop in to the chat room after an episode just to ask "Did anyone spot the Observer?". For those I spoke to after August aired, one of the key values of the chat room is when someone points out the Observer having been found, allowing us to all hit the rewind button and see him for ourselves. For those without a DVR/PVR, you're in luck. Dennis always seems to find him and post him up on the Easter Eggs portion of this site.

Quoting Vinylfreak89: "I'm horribly unobservant. The chat room is nice and helpful though I sure spotted him this episode though. Several times!!"

Fringe Fan Theories:
  1. Observer101: "My main theory is about why Broyles sent Olivia, out of every other agent back in the Pilot to the warehouse. I think that everyone except for Olivia and Peter are in the loop about Olivia and what she can do. Maybe Nina told Broyles of Olivia from what Bell told her. That's why he sent her to the warehouse."

    Corbin:
"What do you think is really going on with Nina and Broyles?"

    Observer101:
"That's a good question - I'll take a stab in the dark and say that maybe they have been placed there to help Olivia get ready. They are slowly feeding her answers to her questions without giving too much away at once."
  2. fringeobsessed: Observer's seem to latch on to a specific "observee".
  3. fringeobsessed: The Observer's gun only fires for special people like Peter.
  4. Raytia: Observer's may be behind more of the Green Green Green Red events, as they appeared to use it as a code to speak to the assassin.
  5. Knower: The Observers can see all of time in our universe...they see it as a complete unit, non linearly.

Historical Photos from the Fringe episode August

Here are the three historical photos shown in the Fringe episode August (They were also in the Fox press kit for August).

The first image is a photo of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, which was taken just minutes before they were assassinated, which eventually led to the start of World War I.

The second image is a painting of Marie Antoinette being taken to her execution during the French Revolution.

The third image is an engraving by Paul Revere titled "The Bloody Massacre", which depicts the events of the Boston Massacre of 1770.

If you looked closely at the photos, you should be able to see the Observer in each one, implying that their observations have been going on for a very long time.

As a bonus, I researched these three photos and found the originals:

Episode Review: August

      Email Post       11/19/2009 10:02:00 PM

After three standalone episodes, Fox promised a return to Fringe's core mythology this week with a much-hyped Observer-centric storyline. The episode itself was certainly thin on the "answers" and "revelations" promised by promos and press releases, but August proved to be one of the show's best outings ever, regardless.

Pinkner and Wyman gave our new Observer a great defining moment in this ep's teaser, when we see his reaction to the war veteran's gift. The emotion in his eyes was a stark contrast to what we're used to seeing from our old pal, September. And while we all knew from the promos that he was helping Christine Hollis instead of kidnapping her, it was still a great twist that August's motives were so personal. Which raises a few questions.
First, why are the Observers immune to emotion? September seemed concerned when August uttered the word "feeling". And further, what happened to August that transformed him into something more human? We know he witnessed Christine's parents' death, and that her noble suffering inspired compassion in August's cold Observer heart, but surely every Observer has witnessed a host of traumatic events without shedding a tear.
And while the narrative was certainly compelling--and while August and Christine certainly stole the show from our series regulars--we're really left with more questions than answers at the end of the night. The Massive Dynamic geek's Observer-talk was well-delivered, but didn't we already know that there was more than one Observer, that they show up for important events in history, and that their appearances have been increasing exponentially in recent months? The episode's reveals seemed more designed to fill in new viewers than anything else. Those of us following the show from Season 1 are still left wondering: why are they here? What are they looking for? Where do they fit in relation to Fringe's other mythological entities, like the shapeshifting hybrids, the alternate reality, the Last Great Storm, and William Bell?
I guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks for clues to those mysteries, since Snakehead looks like another standalone. At least the monster of the week looks like a Ceti eel!

Other Thoughts
-Would the Observers really need to speak out loud to each other?
-August's bullet-grab = awesome.
-Could the casting department have picked someone more threatening to play the Observer's hitman? Even Walter could outrun that guy. He reminded me of a segway cop.
-I loved that Christine Hollis was an MFA student like myself. The actress also did a great job conveying simultaneous fear and gratitude.
-How ridiculous was that Ford Taurus product placement?!
-Is the He-Saved-Us-From-Drowning story just Walter's cover for September's help in stealing Peter from the Alternate Reality?

10 Things You Need To Know About Fringe

      Email Post       11/19/2009 07:28:00 PM

If you're new to the world of Fringe, this video will tell you what you need to know:
  1. The pattern is a series of disturbing unexplained events happening around the world which is being investigated by the fringe division of the FBI.
  2. The main fringe division consists of Phillip Broyles, Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop, Dr. Walter Bishop and Astrid Farnsworth.
  3. Walter spent seventeen years in a mental institution.
  4. Walter's former lab partner, William Bell, founded Massive Dynamic: a multi-billion dollar global corporation and the military's largest contractor. Nina Sharp is the chief operating officer of massive dynamic.
  5. The Observer is a mysterious figure who has been seen at events connected to the pattern throughout history.
  6. The Observer saved Walter and Peter's life years ago when they were in a car accident.
  7. Walter and William Bell have in the past opened a hole into an alternate universe, which may have inadvertently started the pattern.
  8. Peter died when he was seven. He doesn't know this and Walter holds a secret as to whom Peter really is.
  9. As a child, Olivia was tested on by Walter & Bell with a drug called Cortexiphan. Since then she has had special abilities that allow her to see into the other side.
  10. Olivia was pulled into the alternate universe by William Bell, who is apparently stuck there. He warned that a war is coming between the two realities.

    Fringe Ratings: What Me Worry?

          Email Post       11/17/2009 12:42:00 PM

Fringe getting canceled? That's just crazy talk...
There has been a lot of FUD spread around lately concerning Fringe's ratings. Situated in one of the most competitive time slots this fall, ratings have been predictably low. However, Fringe has two things going for it that may allay some fears.

First, in the same time slot, Fringe has improved ratings over what was in the same spot last year. Secondly, with all the cost cutting measures employed by WB in moving the show to Canada and cast and crew redundancy, it is in a much better place to survive lower numbers.

Entertainment Weekly spoke with JJ Abrams, who says the show is not in any immediate danger, and that FOX remains committed to the show.
“The mood on set and in the writer’s room is as good as the ratings are bad, which is to say, wonderful,” Abrams tells me. “Luckily, Fox has been insanely supportive, for which we are deeply grateful.”

Abrams is encouraged by the show’s “strong” DVR numbers as well as the glowing reviews from critics. “But given that we’re on one of the hardest [nights] on television, we’re just focusing on making the best show we possibly can,” he says. “What else can we do?”
Like most things in life, nothing is safe forever, so the LA Times has a list of five things that could help Fringe - more answers, more character development (e.g. Astrid, Bell, Nina), more bad guys, less loose ends, and maybe the most important of all - move the show to a different day.

Fox is a little ham-stringed by not having a 10:00pm primetime slot, so the options for moving the show are limited. Of course it could move back to "reality" Tuesdays, but then there's the American Idol problem in January.

What do you think? Are you worried about Fringe? What would do to improve the ratings?

Observers Spotted At NFL Packers/Cowboys Game

          Email Post       11/16/2009 01:59:00 PM

TWO observers were spotted at Sunday's Greenbay vs. Dallas NFL game on FOX, officially marking the start of Observer Week for Fringe.

The local Wisconsin Fox affiliate WLUK even ran a news piece on the sighting:

    Fringe Observer Week

          Email Post       11/16/2009 01:33:00 PM

Variety is reporting that Fox has launched a major campaign this week to promote the Observer-centric Fringe episode "August":
"Observer Week," as the campaign is dubbed internally, includes placing multiple actors playing "observers" in the crowd at live Fox telecasts -- Sunday's NFL game, as well as an episode of "So You Think You Can Dance."

Fox did something similar last year on programs such as "American Idol" and NASCAR.

Fox will also send out street teams dressed as the observer (dark suits, bald heads, carrying briefcases) to various spots in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Chicago. The characters will pass out Tabasco sauce (a nod to the fact that "Fringe's" observers like spicy food).

Fast-pausing DVR users may also notice subliminal shots of "Fringe's" observers popping up in primetime via hidden images in the net's night opens, as well as via seven-frame graphics flashed throughout the evening.

"The hope is we get a few more viewers watching the show live," Earley said. "Or at least watching it within three days of air. The show is too good, and we want to continue to support it."

The Easter-egg approach of the campaign also plays well with the fans of mythology-based shows like "Fringe," he said.

If you live in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Chicago, Be sure to keep your eye out (and your camera ready.) Please send us an email if you live in any of these areas and would like to see the Observer in person, or to report any Observer sightings you may find.

Fringe Episode Review: Of Human Action

          Email Post       11/14/2009 04:16:00 PM

    Fringe Photos:

The episode starts out with Tyler Carson, a fifteen year old boy that has been kidnapped by two men, that are using mind control to hold him hostage and killing anyone that gets in the way. When the Fringe team arrives we learn Tyler’s father, James Carson works for the Aerospace division of Massive Dynamic.

Fringe Photos: The next scene was interesting in that it is Walter’s first actual contact with Massive Dynamic. He hasn’t seen or heard from Bell in decades but just being in the building, his presence is heavily felt. Early on we gain references and parallels to Peter’s childhood and Walter raising him. It’s the father of the kidnapped boy that says, “What I do here, it's -- it's my life. It's the only -- Tyler's mother died when he was just a boy. And now if -- if I lose him, I don't know what I'd do.” I imagine Walter was much the same way in that his work was his life. Certainly we know Peter was sick and it was his work that he tried using to save him and eventually used to bring the alter-version of him to this world. Though we don’t know much about Peter’s own mother, we do learn that Bell had been the one to introduce them at Neruobiology Conference in Berlin.

Click here to read the rest of the review...

The episode continues with a convenience store robbery and finally a ransom call from the kidnappers demanding two million dollars. Nina Sharp states that “Massive Dynamic will cover any ransom.” At this point to me, the alarm bells were going off. How many businesses would eagerly offer two million dollars to cover a ransom demand. That’s awfully generous. It’s Olivia that doesn’t buy the fact the kidnappers are after money and believe it’s a distraction for something bigger.

Fringe Photos: Walter determines the cause of the mind control is an auditory signal and white noise should be able to protect oneself with headphones and the constant pulsating noise. I do love how Walter seemed to save everything of Peter’s, including a teddy bear that emits the sound of the womb—in essence, white noise. Were those teddy bears even around when Peter was born?

The boy isn’t with the kidnappers and Peter leaves Walter to chase the money only to find himself suddenly under the control of the fifteen year old boy. It was the kidnappers that had actually been kidnapped. Imagine trying to explain that to the police and FBI.

Fringe Photos: The intensity of the episode seems to pick up now as Peter is under the boys control and when he tries to fight it, the boy just becomes reckless, swerving them through traffic, about ready to kill them. Peter gives in, willingly driving the car, learning quickly Tyler can control all or part of him. Peter tries to get inside his head, deflate the situation. It’s Peter that says, “Do you really think that you're the first kid whose father didn't think he was good enough, or smart enough? Take a number.”

We find out it’s up to Walter to disable Tyler as the cocktail he’s taken from Massive Dynamic, the hormones, and his ADD medication have given him the ability of mind control. Walter can’t seem to work, worried about losing his son again and it is Nina that finally is able to get through to him.

Fringe Photos: The search continues and we learn Tyler was lied to about his mother and it was his desire to find her, to be a family that started this whole charade. When they meet up with her, Tyler tells her he wants to go away with her, anywhere. When Seth, her new husband, sees Tyler and asks what’s going on, Tyler loses it and forces Peter against his will to pull the gun. Broyles sees the situation from outside the window and goes into the house. Broyles uses the stun gun to disable Tyler’s ability but in his effort finds himself shot by Peter, in the arm—due to Tyler’s ability. It doesn’t end just yet as Tyler forces Peter back to the road and we find Olivia, Astrid, and Walter trying to get close enough to disrupt Tyler’s brainwaves. Peter sees it working beside him and knowing he might not have much time crashes his father’s car into a telephone pole. Thankfully Peter is okay and the boy though unconscious is also given a sedative to keep his power disabled.

Fringe Photos: In the final scene, we see Nina typing on an old computer a letter to Bell that Tyler #3 displayed the ability of mind control and before they grew aware of his ability had searched out his surrogate mother. Suddenly it all makes sense. This was another experiment by Massive Dynamic.

I think this episode worked well in both a stand-alone and bigger overall story-arc. Nina writes to Bell in regards of the “Penrose-Carson experiments” and for those that have followed the show, may remember Penrose from early season one. I believe the episodes with character driven stories, where their emotions tie in and relate to the cases leave us feeling much more satisfied and invested as viewers.

    Fringe Press Kit: August

          Email Post       11/14/2009 03:55:00 PM

Yesterday I received the FOX press kit for the Fringe episode August. It was a medium sized box with a poster of the Observer (it's one of the August promotional photos) on the front.

Inside the box was a bottle of Tabasco pepper sauce, a page of Observer writing, three historical photos, and the DVD for the episode August.

On the back of the Tabasco sauce was a custom Fringe label with the saying "Observers Are Here", which can also been seen in the opening title sequence.

The letter contains the same strange writing seen in the Observer's notebook from The Arrival.

I'm not sure if these are just random characters, or there is actually a decipherable code, but I do see some repeating characters, so it may not actually be the most complicated code Astrid has ever seen.

I'm sure there are some supreme code crackers out there (e.g. Julian Sanchez), so if anyone figures it out, let me know.

Fringe Photos: The most interesting part of the kit is the "historical" photos. You may recognize the first one from the August preview. I won't explain what is going on in the photos, but it should be fairly obvious if you look closely. Because these photos are a little spoilery, I have put the scans over in the Fringe Spoilers section.

You can see photos of other Fringe press kits here.

    Fringe Photos:
Two weeks ago a lucky Houston FOX affiliate, Ruben Dominguez, got to interview members of the Fringe cast on the set in Vancouver, Canada.

From the brief article it sounds like Ruben had a good time meeting John Noble, Jasika Nicole, Anna Torv, and Joshua Jackson.

According to Domiguez, the last interview, with Joshua Jackson almost did not happen due to the fact that "everyone on the set have had the H1N1 swine flu." Joshua Jackson told Dominguez "he took all the meds he could and fought through as many scenes as he could."

Dominguez also reports that Jackson went to an all-night pharmacy and bought Vitamin B12 injectable and syringes "to inject himself so he could make it to the set the next day."

Wow. We hope that everyone on the Fringe set in Vancouver recovers to their full capacity as quickly as possible!

    Fringe Episode Review: Earthling

    Fringe Photos:
Let me start by telling you how surprised I was that my DVR a week ago said Fringe would be on---and on the actual day it was to air, the guide for the HD feed said MLB World Series. Oddly enough the standard feed still said Fringe. I had found out that morning the show would be airing, thankfully news travels fast on the internet. Though not fast enough for everyone, as chatter was made that many who don’t watch it live, seemed to miss out on watching it on their DVR.

Fringe Photos: So the episode, definitely a stand-alone monster of the week type story. I for one was impressed with the special effects. I don’t believe special effects need to make the show but I liked how it was done. Watching the wife’s hand at the beginning touch her husband and watching his body fall apart while turning to ash in her fingers. It was also one of the first times I could recall a special effect not making me grimace from the gore.

Fringe Photos: Broyles has a softer side. I rather liked the beginning, seeing him interacting with the young boy at the restaurant. We know from last season he was married and has children. It’s clear from this scene he’s not just the tough, no-nonsense guy we’re used to seeing. He likes kids, not a huge surprise but the rather warm interaction was what caught us off guard. It stood out to me and no wonder since we find out this case was the same one that tore apart his marriage and ultimately ended it.

Russian Fringe Science. Now there is an interesting thought. Even Walter says “I’m always amazed at their advancements. Even 40 years ago.” It’s possible we haven’t seen the end of this. Though I don’t imagine it’ll be anytime soon, it could always be a theme revisited, perhaps in season three.

Fringe Photos: In Earthling, we find out the cosmonaut brought home an organism with him from space and it was his brother that stole the comatose cosmonaut from a Russian secret quarantine facility. We’re left wondering how his brother knew what was happening to the cosmonaut and how he would have abducted him from any type of secret facility. So much for it being a secret and for the brother believing he died in space. We learn that the organism needs radiation in order to survive and in stealing that radiation from people, it in essence turns them to dust after passing through them. I find it interesting their physical form doesn’t change until something touches them (a hand, a fly, air from the fan). I suppose it makes for nicer special effects then just letting them turn to a pile of ash at the moment of transfer.

Fringe Photos: I also find it strange that the surveillance at the hospital picked up the shadow organism. Why is it that surveillance video could see it but no one else in all that time at the hospital had witnessed it. Also if he’d been working at the hospital for years, why had there been no incidents? We saw the batteries that the brother was hooking up to the cosmonaut after he took him from the hospital and brought him to a hotel room. Was he getting enough radiation at the hospital and finally he needed more? How many coma patients get regular doses of radiation? Yes the cosmonaut was in a coma but why not focus on a cancer ward where radiation would probably be in higher doses more often? Perhaps that would have been the shadows next move.

Fringe Photos: In the end, in order to stop the organism that has become one with the cosmonaut, it is Broyles that is forced to shoot him--as the brother that kidnapped the cosmonaut is now dead--and he does so without a second thought. This certainly gives us a glimpse that there is perhaps a darker side to Broyles. Is it because this case has haunted him for the last four years or was he just doing what was entirely necessary to stop more lives from being lost? Fringe Division returned the cosmonauts body in a lead case to the Russians and we find out in the very last scene that in fact, a shot to the head, did not kill a comatose cosmonaut or the entity. Confusing, much? Just a little. I could understand the organism being alive but shouldn't the lead case---or rather coffin have prevented the entity from escaping? Why send it out into space? Do the Russians assume that the organism, being closer to the sun, getting higher levels of radiation---where they found it in space---is safer?

I do enjoy a good stand-alone episode but this one left an avid viewer like myself, feeling as though it came up short. Perhaps the stand-alone stories are the writer’s attempts at bringing in casual viewers without overwhelming the new audience. Maybe it’s the fact I’ve been following the show since the beginning, eagerly waiting to learn more about the shape-shifters, observers, the alternate reality, William Bell, Olivia’s ability, and Peter’s childhood. There’s still so much great story-telling and this show in its second season could easily attract new viewers.
