So Peter and Olivia met when they were kids. Bet that has some of you scratching your heads, huh?

Last Friday, Fox's sci-fi uber-coolness Fringe kicked back to 1985 — land of Walter's sideburns and cortexiphan treatments — to show us how young Olivia (called Olive by Dr. Bishop) star-crossed paths with new-to-this-'verse Peter just as she was tapping into her abilities to travel between worlds. Turns out both kids were in tough spots: He was all pissed that his "parents" were trying to sell him on the lie that he hadn't been snatched from another dimension, and she was desperate to avoid the abuse of her stepfather. Before you can say, "young love," the two youngin's are connecting on that kind of level that causes snow to start magically falling and, in Olivia's case, accidentally crossing over to the red universe and cluing Walternate into the possible location of his missing son.

It was awesome! And not just because a certain Watercooler writer also had that Battlestar Galactica boardgame young Petey was eyeing up in the toy store. The scene where Olive spilled the beans to the man she thought was her protector was a chilling mind-bender that only got cooler up multiple viewings. And once you'd figure out that she had indeed just met Walternate, the realization of what that meant (this was the germ of the idea that has inspired the man to devote his life to ending our universe) solved a huge piece of this puzzle.

However, there were a few questions that came out of the hour we'd like to pose to you...

- Was that betamax video of Olive mentally torching her classroom the same one we saw last season? Thought there was a bed in the background of the first one.

- If Walter's old lab assistant Carla died in a fire, who thinks it was one started by Olive?

- How come Peter didn't remember meeting Olivia? We know she blocked out the cortexiphan stuff from last season's "Jacksonville" episode.

- Do we think maybe Olivia has an untapped ability to turn things she imagines into a reality? That snow sort of just happened, you know?

- How come Walter never mentioned that these two met 26 years ago?

- How much do we love Orla Brady as Elizabeth Bishop?

Akiva Goldsman Tells A 'Winter's Tale'

Fringe's consulting producer(and writer) Akiva Goldsman will start directing the shooting of a movie form of 'Winter's Tale' in 2012.

Akiva Goldsman Tells A ‘Winter’s Tale'

To many, Akiva Goldsman is akin to a cinematic antichrist, for having written such screen duds as Lost in Space and Batman and Robin. To others however, he is an Oscar winning screenwriter (Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind) whose films, as a writer, have grossed an average of $122 million at the US box office. Factor in that he’s also a successful producer and you can see why Hollywood likes doing business with the man.

Goldsman is now set to expanding his resume even more by making his feature film directing debut with a big screen adaptation of Mark Helprin’s 1983 fantasy novel, Winter’s Tale.
Winter’s Tale (which Goldsman will also write) has a budget set at a substantial $75 million and it is due to start shooting in 2012, once the writer has finished working …

Fringe Books: What Young Olivia Was Reading in "Subject 13"

The book that young Olivia is reading in "Subject 13" is called Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin.

Wikipedia has some interesting things to say about the book:

The title Winter's Tale is a reference to the similarly named Shakespeare play. In that play, as in this book, a major character disappears for years, only to return after a long and unexplained absence, unharmed, transformed, and redeemed.[Peter?]

Winter's Tale is a 1983 novel by Mark Helprin. It takes place in a mythic New York City, markedly different than our own.[Alternate Universe?]

The most interesting part of the book is name of the main character Peter Lake!

Win Tickets to see John Noble in Paris

The French Fringe website SerieFringe.com is having a contest to give away two tickets to the Sci-Fi Convention in Paris on April 16 and 17th.

One of the tickets is a "Premium Ticket" (135€ value), which includes meeting John noble, plus you'll get an autograph and photo taken with him.

The other "Weekend Ticket" (50€ value) only gets you access to the convention, but you can buy tickets to get an autograph or a photo for 20€ each .


Of course transportation is not included, unless you live in Paris, or are willing to travel there on your own dime, there's not much point in entering. But we know we have some French Fringe fans out there, so to them we say "bonne chance"!

FYI, the contest site is only in French (you can read the site in English through Google Translator here), but the Sci-Fi Convention website is available in French or English.

Fringe Retro Title Sequence Returns

The Fringe episode "Subject 13" is a flashback that takes place in 1985. To match the style of the era, location titles and the Fringe title sequence was given a new look. The same title sequence was also seen in the the Fringe episode "Peter".

The Tron-style graphics are complimented by retro "fringe science" subjects. While these subjects may have seemed "fringe" at the time of Back To The Future and Weird Science, every one (with maybe the exception of cold fusion) is now considered mainstream science.

One thing that seems to be missing from this old school sequence is the "Observers Are Here" quote.

Tonight’s Fringe is a do-not-miss, revelatory episode, crossing time and space and allowing us to see Olivia and Peter as children. The hour is crammed with references to previous episodes while adding a great deal of vivid detail to the series’ fundamental relationships between Walter, Olivia, Peter, and Walter’s wife, Elizabeth.

I don’t want to write anything more, lest I give something away about the episode called “Subject 13.” But how much more strongly can I say this? Don’t miss it!

Hardcore Fringe fans will agree that season 2′s “Peter” was hands up, down, and all-around one of the best hours of the series. The great news is that tonight’s follow-up episode, “Subject 13″ (which references the test subject number assigned to young Olivia), will rank right up there with it.

"Subject 13" showcases Torv, Noble and Jackson's performing abilities in ways sci-fi serial dramas rarely try. Next Episode Clue: In the last episode "Immortality", the license plate of the second victim is APT6B. In this episode, Alice Merchant lived in Apt 6B, which is also the title of the episode.

Review-'6B'

How do I love thee '6B'? Let me count the ways?

I can almost picture the writers' brainstorming meeting for this episode. Someone says it'll be a Valentine's week airing and there's discussion about what that means. Inevitably all the forms of love come into conversation and Shakespeare's name is bandied about. Or, knowing the genius of executive producers Jeff Pinkner and JH Wyman, this episode which came to be known as 6B was built into the story arc in rough form way back in Season 1.

That would definitely not surprise me.

'6B' is a bittersweet tale of love and loss, and I daresay, probably the heaviest dose of foreshadowing we've been given since 'Brown Betty' in Season 2. Having seen '6B' three times now(that's not much for me) I think this episode was brilliantly written. It's also a none too subtle reminder of where Fringe is right now and where it is headed. The blue universe has a new gigantic elephant in the room we can label the threat of holes, not soft spots as Olivia is corrected by Walter. No one's been giving too much thought as to the decay of our side, until now when the threat looms large and fresh in Brooklyn, a location very close to the first and huge vortex that formed in the East River Over There. I guess we should feel lucky, their vortex began in 1989, so the whole(pun intended) process is beginning more slowly on our side.

Fringe Now: Alternate Universe Articles - Smiley

The Fox "Fringe Now" website has a new "Alternate Universe Article", which shows a news article from the Red universe, on one of those ubiquitous tablet devices.

The article is titled "Smiley - The saber-toothed tiger has been genetically resurrected.":

The New San Diego Zoo is creating a habitat for "Smiley," the first genetically resurrected saber-toothed tiger. Smilodon fatalis, which thrived in the Pleistocene epoch over 12,000 years ago, will be available for public view later this year. The zoo hopes it will be joined by an American mastodon by 2014.

It's interesting to note that the zoo is in "new" San Diego, implying something happened to the old one. It was likely destroyed when half of California went missing.

Fringe Ratings 314: 6B

A little good news for Fringe fans: ratings for '6B' were UP last week! According to Entertainment Weekly:

Fringe averaged 4.1 million viewers and a 1.5 preliminary adults 18-49 rating, up one tenth — or 7% — from last week. That’s still a ways off from the hearty 1.9 rating the show posted its first two weeks in its new Friday time slot, but any increase is a positive sign. (Perhaps fans heard Joshua Jackson’s message that they better start watching on Fridays if they want the show to return).

Fox actually tied usual Friday leader CBS to win the night, helped by Fringe lead-in Kitchen Nightmares (3.9 million, 1.7) rising 13%. That’s helpful for Fringe too, the “who won the night” boast is valued by all networks.

While most Thursday shows hit season lows the night before, several Friday programs posted gains along with Fringe.

Hopefully this means the message is hitting home - please watch Fringe live on Fridays if you can, or at least DVR it and watch as soon as possible. Joshua Jackson says:

We really need our Fringe fans to tune in and watch us on Fridays ... It is going to take the people that like the show to watch the show and .. show their support if they want to see us stick around for another season.”

UPDATE: The Live + 7 DVR ratings are in for "Concentrate and Ask Again", and Fringe topped all shows for "Post Airdate 18-49 Rating % Increase from DVR Viewing", bumping Fringe's 1.6 to a 2.5 — a 56% increase! Now if we could just get all those people to watch live...

Joshua Jackson: 'Start the campaign' to save ‘Fringe’

FoxFans wondering about the fate of Fringe are not alone. Star Joshua Jackson is watching the ratings along with the rest of us. “I’m a positive person in general, but we really need our Fringe fans to tune in and watch us on Fridays,” Jackson tells EW. “We did good when we first moved, but last week we did not have a good week, ratings wise. It is going to take the people that like the show to watch the show and start the campaign and show their support if they want to see us stick around for another season.”

Meanwhile, more data has come in about those ratings from last Friday: The episode’s adult demo climbed 57 percent over the next three days thanks to DVR playback. That’s a lot, and higher than the previous Friday’s Fringe DVR gain, suggesting that more fans are electing to watch the show over the weekend (not enough, however, to change the overall story — numbers still fell when comparing week to week). Still, the data reinforces Jackson’s point: Fans need to watch the show on Fridays.

As for what comes next on the show, Jackson gave us more reasons to tune in …
“Apparently I’m gonna be a dad,” he says. “And it is like the most extreme long-distance relationship, which I am pretty good at as it turns out in real life. My baby mama is in another universe. I think he has to find out, but I don’t know exactly how we’re gonna work that out yet. I have not see the finale script yet or anything. The whole other universe thing and the machine and the war of the two worlds is obviously the end of this season. But you would think they can’t just let the baby thing fall away.”

Jackson also noted the show has gotten “very Romeo and Juliet-ish in” the last couple of weeks but says the show “will go back to some straight Fringeiness very soon.”

“We have been exploring our feelings a lot lately,” he says. “I feel sort of bad for fans of the relationship. The Peter-Olivia supporters have been taken for quite a ride. He wants to be with her, and in his mind it was her. But in her mind, he should have been able to tell the difference. But we get back to some cold hard out-there science stuff soon enough.”

With Fringe's recent reveal that newly weaponized Peter Bishop will determine who wins the impending war between universes solely by choosing an Olivia to be with (it's a lot less stupid than that, but we're paraphrasing for brevity's sake), it seems to us that Peter shares some commonalities with another TV icon: the Bachelor. And since choosing an Olivia makes the foundation for the most dramatic inter-universe rose ceremony ever, we thought we'd run down each girl's pros and cons to help the guy decide.

How does Fox feel about Fringe’s performance on Friday so far? Quite enthusiastic.

“I’m so psyched about it,” says Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly. “It does go to show you the loyalty of the genre audience, when you get the right show. I’m so grateful to that audience, I’d like to shake their hands. We have a lot of passion for that show here.”

Now, this interview was just before last Friday’s second-in-row dip, but most other shows also fell that night and one rating does not a reputation make. As for Human Target ….
“We have some decisions to make about that,” Reilly says, “and Lie to Me as well. These shows are not being rejected. They’re doing a consistent and solid number. There are networks that would be happy to take those shows. We have to look at our shelf space.”

Translation: We’re going to decide about Human Target and Lie after we see our pilots for next fall. But keep in mind, Fox only programs two hours a night, so that’s a pretty crowded shelf….

Vote for Fringe To Be In Spoiler TV Banner

Spoiler TV is redesigning their banner, and they are letting fans decide which shows will make the cut. Anna Torv is in the current banner, so it would be great to keep Fringe there.

The voting will be done via Twitter. In order to place you vote, you have to click the Fringe twitter link and let the link post EXACTLY what it says to Twitter. According to the rules, you can not add or delete anything from the tweet, or it will not be counted (along with 500 or so Lie To Me votes...)

Fringe Ratings 313: Immortality

The ratings for Fringe fell again last week, down to a series low rating of 1.4. The silver lining in this news however, is that all shows last Friday were down. So while it is never good for your rating to drop, it's not so much a reflection on Fringe, as it is TV watching in general on that night. With Valentine's Day on a Monday this year, I know a lot of people who celebrated on Fringe Friday or Saturday instead.

Fringe executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman also had this to say to Give Me My Remote about the low ratings this week:

J.H. Wyman: When CSI goes down 20% and every single show on the night goes down and they [all] had their lowest postings and FRINGE is one of those shows, you can’t single out FRINGE and say, “Oh no.” And we’ve been told, as long as we’re getting a 1.2 [in the important demo] or whatever, that’s okay for Friday nights, man!

When things go down across the board, the viewers need to understand that that’s okay. That’s when people can rationalize [the ratings decrease]. When they can’t rationalize it is when everything goes up or posts even and your show is going down. That’s the problem. Friday nights…traditionally, nothing has worked [on Fox]. But if we’re continuing with a 1.4, a 1.5 and the DVRs are going up and we’re still posting a 2.3 or 2.4 with the DVRs, that’s good.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox is still enthusiastic:

“I’m so psyched about it,” says Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly. “It does go to show you the loyalty of the genre audience, when you get the right show. I’m so grateful to that audience, I’d like to shake their hands. We have a lot of passion for that show here.”

Contrast that with his comments about some other low rated shows:

“We have some decisions to make about [Human Target],” Reilly says, “and Lie to Me as well. These shows are not being rejected. They’re doing a consistent and solid number. There are networks [FX?] that would be happy to take those shows. We have to look at our shelf space.”

Fox knows that Fringe has an amazing and loyal fan base, so if Fringe can hang on to a 1.2 to 1.4 everything should be fine. J.H. Wyman suggests the most important thing you can do to help Fringe:

If the viewer can, watch [Fringe] live. If they can’t, DVR it. That’s the message. That’s the only thing people will respond to over at Fox. They’re not going to say, “It’s critically acclaimed and the fans really like it but nobody’s watching it.”

If you DVR the show and can't watch it live, it is important to at least watch it within the first 24 hours, or viewing won't be included in the "Live + Same Day" ratings. Also, don't fast forward through those commercials. Advertisers don't like that ;)

While some will want to tell you that the sky is falling, I'll leave you with these words from Jeff Pinkner:

Our message to our fans would be please don’t fret, watch the show, don’t be anxious and enjoy the story.

Friday’s @FRINGEonFOX jumps +57% from its Live + Same Day A18-49 rating (1.4 > 2.2) #FRINGE

In English, that means the 1.4 rating is adjusted up to 2.2 when you add 3 days of DVR viewings. This is still a little lower than the previous week (2.3), but for what it's worth, it's "the biggest such increase on any broadcast net (% basis) this season."

The Fox "Fringe Now" website has a new "Alternate Universe Article", which shows a news article from the Red universe, on one of those ubiquitous iPad-type devices.

The article is titled "Chunnel - The British and Belgian governments unveil plans for a Chunnel.":

The British and Belgian governments unveil plans for a "Chunnel" connecting the two countries beneath the North Sea. The announcement follows the collapse of British negotiation with France in late 2009. The with stretch over 115 km and connect Ramsgate, England and Ostende, Belgium.

For comparison, the chunnel in our universe connecting the UK and France is 50 km. 

Also, it's nice to see there are typos in the other 'verse.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god—and that’s just my reaction to the crawly bugs, which gave me some really horrible nightmares. Everything else? I’m not even sure of what to say: so many developments, so many possibilities, so much dramatic tension.

After much speculation, the truth was revealed in Friday night's episode of Fringe: The other Olivia (Anna Torv) is pregnant with Peter's baby.

As if the two universes couldn't be more complicated, the producers of the Fox series tell TVGuide.com exclusively that there will be much larger things to come. Will Walternate (John Noble) use Bolivia's baby to lure Peter (Joshua Jackson) back to the alternate universe? The sinister answer may surprise you.

TVGuide.com: Why make Bolivia pregnant? Was this your way of humanizing the other universe?J.H. Wyman: Yes. It's what the alternate universe is doing and who they are really is why they're human to us. There will be some much larger things to come, definitely.

TVGuide.com: It seems as though Walternate is going to use Bolivia's pregnancy to get Peter back to the alternate universe.
Jeff Pinkner: Well, actually, I'm not sure that's what's going to happen. It's implied that he's going to use the baby to get Peter back, but I think that the baby will provide Walternate with a means to his end, but it's not limited exclusively to getting Peter back.

TVGuide.com: Since the baby has the same DNA as Peter, does that mean it could be used to activate the machine?
Pinkner: That's a possibility. So, as Joel said, it has been our intent from the beginning to complicate the viewers' [main] interests. By exploring this alternate universe, we're trying to, over time, allow people to realize that they're not the bad guy. Walternate is the biggest victim in this entire saga. He had his son stolen from him.

TVGuide.com: Bolivia seems to really be in love with Peter, so how is he going to feel about Walternate's plans, whatever they might be?
Pinkner: Bolivia is just a citizen of that world who, heroically, like the fireman, is trying to put out the flames and is now involved in this much larger saga and genuinely fell for Peter. You'll definitely see repercussions of that line of thinking. All of this will drive the storytelling towards the back end of the season, for sure. She's also just discovered she's pregnant. There's a whole saga that goes on with that. It causes her to ask questions about herself.

TVGuide.com: Peter and Olivia's relationship is already so strained. Once this news comes out, will it cause a bigger break in their relationship?
Pinkner: This has been a year of self-actualization. People are starting to ask a lot of questions: what they stand for, what they're doing here, what their involvement is and what they're experiencing. I'm looking also at [them] going through changes that may bring their complex relationship to a whole other level. I can definitely assure you that it's not going to fall out in a way that you would expect.

TVGuide.com: Peter has become a machine in a lot of ways. Will this news bring back his humanity, or might it destroy him all together?
Pinkner: We were not trying to suggest that Peter was becoming a machine. The machine is clearly tapped into the darker side of his nature. This is a character who, because of Olivia and Bolivia,who he thought was Olivia, has become more vulnerable and more willing to allow somebody into his heart and to know him, both good and bad, since he was brought to our world. We were using that episode to show Olivia is actually getting through to him... we're trying to earn their relationship in a way that isn't like, "Oh, pretty TV actor, pretty TV actress, they belong together."

TVGuide.com: How Peter feels about a particular universe will effect which universe is saved by the machine. So, in learning about this pregnancy, should we all be really worried about the regular universe now?
Pinkner: There's always peril for this universe because it is going to start to break down like over there. I think that as the cards are being laid out for you, you're going to have certain assumptions, but our job is to make sure that we turn over some cards that you didn't even expect to see. So, right now, you may assume that, but it would just be an assumption.

TVGuide.com: Will Bolivia return to the normal universe?
Pinkner: Eventually, I think the characters will all meet up again. But, we're not, at this moment, prepared to say when or where.

TVGuide.com: Each season finale has had a big "what the heck just happened?" moment: showing us the Twin Towers, Olivias being switched... What can we look forward to this year?
Pinkner: There are always going to be big revelations, hopefully earned revelations that you're like, "Oh, my gosh. I never saw it coming and I'm so intrigued and compelled." It's going to be a big event, which will propel us into Season 4 and, hopefully, have you look at the show through a completely different prism and say, "Oh, wow, I never saw that coming."

The Glyphs code in the Fringe episode Immortality spelled out ROMAD. According to Urban Dictionary, ROMAD is an acronym for Radio Operator Maintainer And Driver, and a slang term describing a group that were tricked into a job no one else wanted to do.
