Fringe Observiews 5.02 In Absentia

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 5 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…

4.12 Welcome To Westfield

OLIVIA: “What's she like? The other Olivia. I'm just curious.”
PETER: “I don't know, she's, uh -- she's driven. She's very, very stubborn. She doesn't like to lose. But she sees the best in people, even when they don't see it themselves.”

And just to eliminate any confusion of which Olivia I’m talking about I’ll quote Nina from
4.16 Nothing As It Seems.

NINA: “I suppose every version of you is stubborn.”

And this came to mind as well from 2.19 Brown Betty.

FICTIONAL PETER: “So what made you wanna be a detective?”
FICTIONAL OLIVIA: “I don't know. Uh, I, uh... I guess that I just always knew what it was I was meant to do.”
FICTIONAL PETER: “And what's that?”
FICTIONAL OLIVIA: “To care for people.”

Yep, that’s Olivia and Etta recognized all of that too… at least at the end.

Fringenuity Projects: Operation Ambergram

Some of you may remember last summer's Blue Moon Awards: an unprecedented fan response to yet another year of our beloved show going unrecognized for its brilliance in certain professional circles (coughEmmy'scough). In one of the first projects organized by Fringenuity members, a small group of fans commissioned their own awards and sent them to the cast and crew, recognizing them all for their extraordinary achievements in storytelling. Since this all happened before the birth of the social media campaigns, and long before the name "Fringenuity" was coined, the reach was rather small, and many people never heard about the project until after it had been completed.

But now there's a second chance.

Fringenuity is proud to announce a similar project, dubbed "Operation Ambergram". This time, the idea isn't so much to send "awards" as it is to send a parting thank you gift to everyone we can track down who had a hand in making our show over the last five years. Fringe Review/Analysis 5.02 - The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree(s)...

The continuous 13 episode story arc was promised to be full of rich emotional moments for our beloved odd little family unit, and the premiere provided plenty of those. In Absentia, provides these, but I experienced feelings all over the spectrum of human capability.

Once again, we are immersed in the Bishop family picnic in the park outing. However, this time the idyllic setting is taking place from the perspective of Olivia. Some details appear to be different; as Peter’s dream has them lying on a red blanket, but Olivia’s version is green. (Green, green, green, red, anyone?) She, too, notices the building literally disappear in the city landscape background, and makes a run for her daughter just as the Observers phase into the timeline. Peter’s voice, yelling for Etta is very prominent, even as Olivia awakens, disoriented, in a makeshift hospital. Peter has never really been one to flip out, but he is so distraught over their missing daughter, that Olivia bolts out of her gurney towards him, calling his name…

Observer Talk - In Absentia

I hope you were all paying attention to the weeks Fringe activities, there is much to discuss.

In the episode the most obvious usage of the observer language symbols was the face tattoos that Peter and Etta both had to wear.

Serve for Peter and Obey for Etta, milostansfield mentioned in the comments of last weeks Observer Talk that the type of tattoo is possibly a rank or hierarchy of some sort. Obey for civilians, Heed for ordinary guards, and Serve for full soldiers.

The Fringe Podcast Episode 504-In Absentia

In episode 504 of The Fringe Podcast we discuss Fringe season 5 episode titled, "In Absentia." Darrell uses information about Simon and the angel device to update his theory about the Observers and shapeshifters. Clint shares his musings on the motivation of the Observers and why they chose to invade at this specific moment in time.  In Absentia refers to the Fringe Team as they struggle to come to terms with a world that has arisen while they slumbered and is unlike any they could have foreseen.  A world of misery, oppression, and as we are shown in the Medical and Science Building - a world of horror.

For Peter and Olivia it is even more difficult as they try to reconcile emotionally and mentally not only the loss of their child daughter but her return as an adult.  An adult; forged and tempered to be hard because of the harsh reality she has grown up in.
