Shipper Nation: A Valentine's Day treat for 'Fringe' lovers and a salute to TV's most romantic, creative (and arguably strangest) fans-by Jeff Jensen

Shipper Nation: A Valentine's Day treat for 'Fringe' lovers and a salute to TV's most romantic, creative (and arguably strangest) fans
by Jeff Jensen
Last Friday, Fringe fans were treated to an instant-classic installment of the Fox sci-fi series, one that significantly advanced the season’s defining storyline: Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) — marooned in a new rendering of history in which he has not existed since he was a child – trying to return home to his own timeline. Yet for one particular, peculiar subset of loyal Fringe viewers, “Welcome to Westfield” was nothing short of an early Valentine’s Day gift. They’re the fans for whom the dream sequence spectacle of Peter and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) making love was a dream come true. They’re the fans that got goosebumps when Olivia planted a kiss on Peter, as if this “reboot” version of his ladylove had suddenly reverted back to the original iteration of her. They’re fans known as ‘shippers, and if you’re a Web-chatty TV watcher or pop culture aficionado who tends to fixate on romantic relationships in your favorite fiction or fantasize about the mere possibility of amorous activity between your favorite make-believe people, then you’re probably one of them.
In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, we explore how the shipper phenomenon — which began with The X-Files and until recently has been more associated with sci-fi and fantasy fandom — has gone mainstream and how shippers themselves can impact the creative process. An added bonus for Fringe fans: Exec producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman tell EW that an episode scheduled to air next month, entitled “A Short Story About Love,” will be a shipper milestone. “We’ve always said that no great love story is worth telling unless it’s a twisty, long road,” says Wyman of a season that has left some Peter/Olivia shippers frustrated because the story has essentially kept the pair — or at least, the versions of the characters who love each other — heartbreakingly apart. Adds Pinkner: “You have to have a setback before you have a victory, otherwise the storytelling becomes flat and boring.” Wyman adds that “A Short Story About Love” should be “the be-all and end-all in terms of people’s expectations of the Peter/Olivia relationship.”
Who are shippers? They’re people like Gillian Bromfield, a Fringe fan from the United Kingdom who’s been invested in the growing rapport between Olivia (her favorite character) and Peter since the pilot. She expresses her affection by producing music videos and posting shippy clips about the couple on her Fringe-dedicated YouTube channel. “The episode that took me headfirst into shipper territory was ‘The Cure.’ [The sixth episode from season 1.] The scene at the end when Olivia speaks to Peter outside the hotel just had me squealing with delight,” writes Bromfield in an e-mail interview. “What do I like about them as a couple? Well, I see them as two damaged people that come to respect and love each other, and the deeper the mythology of the show goes, the more it appears they were always destined to be together.”
Shipper Nation is a varied, dynamic, sometimes combative community whose members desire romance from — or project romance onto — almost any kind of pop culture pairing, from Stefan and Elena (or Damon and Elena) on The Vampire Diaries, to Liz and Jack on 30 Rock, to Simon and Paula on The X-Factor, to even Harry Potter and Little Red Riding Hood on Once Upon a Time. (Okay, we made that last one up, although “crossover” shipping — coupling characters from different fictions — is very common.)

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 413, "A Better Human Being"-BeABetterMan
Last Friday's Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign, sponsored by Fringenuity, was quite successful.
Fringe Television is proud to support Fringenuity's efforts to promote "Fringe" in as many social media venues as possible, and asks for your help.
Thanks to the wonderful Ari Margolis who linked last week's post to the FringeOnFOX site,
there were 3 times as many Twitter Fringe participants! By the 15th minute of the event, the hash tag #BreakingOut reached the Worlwide trending topics, earning the #2 (non-promoted) spot and holding it for over 20 minutes.
Tomorrow night we want to continue our social media domination, and the Fringedom wants to try to get the hash tag #BeABetterMan to trend on Twitter starting at 8PM Eastern. Please note the start time to tweet is 1 hour LATER than previously, in an effort to increase our chances of trending. That's 1 hour before the new episode airs, and then again at 8PM Pacific time.
Why keep tweeting? Because we know that ratings isn't just about Nielsen boxes anymore. TV networks and their contractors pay attention to which TV shows are 'socially-active' and our show Fringe is very socially-active on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other venues.
Why continue this effort? Last Friday's event catapaulted Fringe in multiple social media platforms, and we need to keep Fringe visible in these platforms in the weeks ahead, especially with the ongoing FOX/Warner Brothers negotiaions for a Season 5.
Please consider joining in tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern and 8PM Pacific to support your favorite show by signing into Twitter and using the #BeABetterMan hash tag.
If you are not familiar with Twitter, you can create an new account rather painlessly at http://www.twitter.com/.
For more information on this week's special Fringe Twitter event click here.
You can also adopt special icons for this event by clicking here.
Just a reminder: Please do not tweet with the #BeABetterMan hash tag until 8PM Eastern, to increase the likelihood of trending! And volume helps, so tweet slowly, and tweet often after the start time Friday night!
Let's dominate Twitter Friday night, and make our hash tag and our show trend!
***ButWait! There's more!***
Another social network platform that needs our attention on Friday nights is GetGlue.com.
If you are not familiar with getglue.com it is a very clever advertising site married to social networking.
GetGlue merges fans with their interests, and their interests' sponsors.
If you have a GetGlue account you can "check-in" to Fringe. The shows that get the most check-ins are highly visible to the networks and the show's sponsors.
It is recommended you start checking into GetGlue closer to the start time of Fringe to increase the chance of trending there.
You can also look up Fringe's sponsors on GetGlue, check-in to them, ie. Nissan Leaf, Sprint, etc., and thank them for supporting Fringe. Think it doesn't make a difference? Guess again.
Last week due to our GetClue check-ins, the Nissan Leaf was one of the most checked-in sponsors on the site.
Let’s make it a combined effort to not only check-in to the show, but to also check-in to the show’s advertisers and comment, “Thank You for your support of Fringe! @FringeOnFox”
If you don’t have a Getglue account, get one! You can post your check-ins to Twitter or Facebook.
The more activity, the better, as this may also get other Fringies involved in the GetGlue check-ins.
GetGlue also has convenient mobile phone aps for iphone, Android, and Blackberry.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Please, enjoy the new episode tomorrow night, and support high visibility of your show by tweeting on Twitter with the special hash tag, and checking into Fringe at getglue.com and thanking at least 1 of Friday night's many sponsors. Your efforts will not go unrewarded, and may help increase our chances of getting a Season 5.
Go FRINGE!

Fringe Observiews 4.12 Welcome to Westfield
By cortexifan Email Post 2/14/2012 09:39:00 AM Categories: Fringe, Observiews, Review, Season 4
Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.
Screen caps are taken from fringefiles.com. Dialog is from fringepedia.net/transcripts.
All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…
1.17 Bad Dreams
OLIVIA: “Gruesome.”
RACHEL: “Gruesome? That's a good word.”
… to describe this episode because it was gruesomely awesome.

Dorothy watches Miss Gulch ride her bicycle through the window of her bedroom after the tornado winds have blown it in.

Walter gazes at a bicycle in the window, just before the storm winds blow it in. Note that the bike is facing in the opposite direction of Miss Gulch's and Walter occupies the opposite half of the frame that Dorothy does.

Fringe Easter Egg: Next Episode Clue 412

Every episode of Fringe contains a hidden "next episode clue" that foreshadows something in the following episode. In the last Fringe episode "Making Angels", when the Kerry Watson leaves the liquor store (before she is killed by Neil Chung), there is a sign on the window for Quimby Irish Ale...
Fringe Review: Welcome to Westfield
By Josie Kafka Email Post 2/12/2012 04:42:00 PM Categories: Fringe review, Fringe. Season 4, Welcome to Westfield

“You folks lost?”
“Not that I’m aware of.”
This is an episode that could have gone either way: horribly disappointing or deeply satisfying. Standalones and trapped-in-a-town narratives can provide a welcome relief from an overarching mythology, or a frustrating sense that the writers are dragging their feet. Somehow, “Welcome to Westfield” didn’t have either of those results at all: the standalone elements were so evocative of so many other episodes, and the final surprise was so darn exciting that the relief I felt wasn’t at the break from the mythos, but at the sense that we are finally, finally getting somewhere.
Fringe Easter Eggs: Observer in "Welcome To Westfield"
By Dennis Email Post 2/11/2012 12:06:00 AM Categories: Easter Eggs, Fringe, Observer, Season 4
Observers make an appearance in every Fringe episode. In the Fringe episode "Welcome To Westfield", one can be spotted standing on the highway along with the stranded drivers, watching a plane crash.
You can see all of the other hidden appearances of Observers here.
Here is a close-up of the observer:
