Will There Be A Fifth Season of Fringe?

The discussion about renewing Fringe for a fifth season kicked off this week at the Television Critics Association press tour, where J.J. Abrams and Fox's entertainment president Kevin Reilly were asked if the show would be back next season:

“I would like to have one more season to wrap things up,” show executive producer J.J. Abrams said after his panel promoting Alcatraz. “But then that’s what any producer would say.”


“I’m hopeful,” Abrams said. “There’s some stuff coming up this season that’s so great. Maybe it’s dumb optimism that the good work [of the Fringe showrunners Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman] will be rewarded. And if not on Fox,” he added, “maybe somewhere else.”

Moving a show to another network rarely happens, so what are Fringe's chances on Fox? Fox's entertainment president Kevin Reilly had this to say:


“Fringe has been a point of pride. I share the passion for the show the fans have. I love that Fox, after letting down genre fans over the years [came through with Fringe]. I love that fans stuck with it after it moved to Friday. It has vastly improved our Friday night."

However, the situation is not all milkshakes and red vines, as Reilly explained the problem:

"The hesitation in my voice is that it’s an expensive show. We lose a lot of money on the show. But with that rating on that night it’s almost impossible for us to make money on it. We’re not in the business of losing money."

While that doesn't sound very hopeful, Reilly added:

“Please don’t start the letter-writing campaign. I can’t take it. I hope we get some credit with the fans for seeing through a great show that they’ve enjoyed,” Reilly says. “I’m not now quietly doing the soft cancel here. I’m just telling you where it stands. I know (the producers and the studio) want to keep it going.” 

So where exactly does it stand?

"We need to figure out if there’s a [deal with studio Warner Bros. that] will make sense or will this be it." Reilly said.

According to MSNBC, fans can relax, because Warner Bros boss Peter Roth told then that talk of  cancellation is premature:

"We have no plans to give viewers closure this season because we expect the series to continue."

Fringe star Joshua Jackson agrees that the show should get a proper finish:

"The important thing to me is that our writers are given a chance to finish the show because it’s a serialized show.”

The head writers of the the show, executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman say that no matter what happens, the show will ultimately get a satisfying conclusion:

“The answer to that question is the same every year,” Pinkner started when asked if and when they’d need a heads up to wrap things up. “Worst case scenario, if this were the last aired season of Fringe — and as we’ve said before, there are other outlets where we could continue our stories, be they graphic novels or webisodes — we know what the end of this season is going to be, and it can function as a series finale.”

What's The Early Word On 4.08? Why, It's Grrrreat!

Are you as excited for this Friday as I am?

As the screener for 4.08 makes it way out to media outlets, reactions are showing up on the web.  So far I have come across three of them.  When the promo for 4.08 - "Back To Where You've Never Been" - aired way back in November of 2011, viewers could tell that the table setting of the first third of the season was complete and things were going to kick into the next gear.

One of the most recurring observations of the season was that many did not care about the characters from this new timeline.  Sounds very reminiscent of last season when the AltVerse characters were initially met with the same resistance.

With 4.08, looks like the show has, once again, engaged viewers with this latest new set of characters.

Fringe Rewatch 407: Wallflower

Join us during the fall/winter break every Friday for our Fringe Winter Rewatch.

Here is one of those standalone episode I miss most, besides the ones OVER THERE. As I was saying last week, we are still setting up for what is to come this season. What is Fringe without Nina Sharp and the part that Massive Dynamic plays in this story?

Migraines plague Olivia. How long has she been having them?

After a late night trip to the pharmacy, she spots Agent Lee sitting in an all night diner. He tells her what has been keeping him up at nights over coffee. "I used to believe just a few months ago that, I understood the world we lived in. I mean There were basic truths that I thought were... well... true. I used to sleep like a baby. Blissful ignorance." Blink. Blink. "You know, eventually it will just become your life." It was the same for her, but she doesn't really lose sleep over it like he does. I noticed Olivia never took her eyes off of him the whole time he talked.

Later we see Jack Zoephel hurrying home. He is scared by something. He tells his wife on the phone that he thinks someone is following him. Just as he opens the building door, Jack is rushed in by an invisible assailant. The police arrived less than 2 minutes later to find him dead. One of the officers start shooting at something in the same vein as Sue Storm from Fantastic Four.

Then you have Peter shopping for supplies under supervision and limited civilian interaction. He find these restrictions annoying.

Meanwhile, Fringe Division is called to the crime scene. The officer, who thinks he shot at the killer, tells the science team that he did not actually see anything, but was too afraid to admit that it could be a phantom. In a nod to the season 2 episode Dream Logic, (which apparently never happened in this universe) the victim was completely drained of pigment, prompting Walter to theorize that he may have been scared to death.

At Olivia's prompting, Astrid tells her that the job gets to her too. Astrid sees the company psychiatrist. Olivia realizes she doesn't really talk to anyone. "I'm starting to think that that's weird. That's just not normal, is it?" Back to the case at hand. Lincoln finds trace evidence of blood, proving their perpetrator is no ghost.

Somewhere in a makeshift lab, there is a shelf of personal items. Off to the side there is a tub of liquid. A perfectly normal looking young man emerges from it. Later on, he waits to board an elevator on the 14th floor. He only gets on when a woman he recognizes is there. As soon as she disembarks, the man begins to fade from view.

There have been 3 other bodies similar to the victim, found in the surrounding area over the past 2 weeks, but police never made the connection. Walter finds a mucus-like substance on the corpse. They are chromatophore cells found in octopi or chameleons, cells that allow certain creatures to blend into their backgrounds. Another mystery. The blood sample match that of a baby that was born in 1989. Baby boy Bryant was born with an unclassified genetic variant. He supposedly died 4 days later from complications from his genetic abnormality. What we see from the scene, in the records room, Lincoln taking care of Olivia.

An interview with the nurse, who signed off on his death, revealed that the baby was taken by a private insurance company Cyprox, Incorporated, which was a subsidiary of Kelvin Genetics. (See Season 1 Episode 16 Unleashed) And Kelvin Genetics was now Massive Dynamic.

At Massive Dynamic headquarters, Nina confirms that the boy had been taken for genetic experimentation. The nature of his abnormality allowed chromatophores to be implanted into his system, making him able to blend into his surroundings. While there were military applications, the experiments did allow him to live. It wasn't until a fire in the lab ten years ago, Nina and William Bell would not have learned about Eugene, the name the researchers called him, which was short for unknown genetic disorder. She assumed he had died then.

It did not escape Nina's notice that Olivia seemed to identify with the child's plight. Maybe it would have been better if he had died. "All his life he didn't have a proper name."

We then see Eugene has secretly entered the home of the woman from the elevator.

At the Bishop house, Lincoln brings plans for the machine responsible for the bridge, which Peter believes will be powerful enough to send him home. Peter is grateful for Lincoln's kindness. The scene also reveals how appealing Olivia is to Lincoln.

Back at the lab, Walter shows off his newly purchased octopus. Will the FBI never learn to give the man a budget? Olivia ponders whether Eugene is killing people to steal their pigment to make himself seen. It makes sense to Walter, who surmises that Eugene was using the chromatophores to absorb the victims' pigment. To overcome his condition, he would have to kill again. And he does. His next victim is Ned Ryerson, who we saw earlier on the elevator.

Walter demonstrates what he has learned about the experiment done to Eugene with a pair of lab mice. If Eugene succeeds in curing himself, he will surely die from the genetic abnormality he was born with. The good news is they should be able to find him with ultraviolet light.

In the massive manhunt, it is Eugene who finds Olivia first when she falls through the floor. "All my life... I've been watching them live theirs. Watching them... fall in love. To be looked upon by the right person... to connect... and to see in their eyes kindness. Happiness. And recognition. That's when you exist." He rejects her help and blends among the residents, however, the agents locate where he lived in the building. They find items he has collected from the residents he watched. It was never about being cured. "This was about being seen."

"I thought you weren't coming today. I see you everyday." Better late than never. Poor Eugene does not fade out, because he succeeded in curing himself at the cost of his own life.

Olivia tells Nina that they've found Eugene Bryant's body. "All he wanted was to be like everyone else. But how could he? He could never be like anyone else. Not after what they did to him." Nina knows that Olivia is thinking about what was done to her. "Do you think the Cortexiphan trials stunted my emotions?"

"Life is an experiment you have to find out where you belong." Nina wasn't far off with that remark. "Find your own place in this world." She goes on to tell her, "When the time is right you will know." This just tells me that Olivia has not reached her potential and her innate abilities have yet to be activated.

Back at the Federal Building, Peter drops off new glasses for Lincoln and then Olivia considers stopping by the diner later for a possible rendezvous.

While Lincoln waits at the diner, Olivia is delayed indefinitely. She is incapacitated in her apartment. Once she is unconscious, 2 men enter with little difficulty. They tamper with her security system, to remove signs of them ever being there perhaps, and inject her with Cortexiphan. Then we see Nina Sharp as the one who probably let them in. She closes the door after they leave. The look on Nina's face look was like the one she had in the season 2 episode Brown Betty. They leave Olivia with no memory of the last 2 hours. Of course, all this might only give Olivia a nasty headache, because in this universe, I have a feeling that they don't really know what Cortexiphan does to her, without the proper stimulus.

Who says Fringe is fading? If your questions are any indication, intrigue about this mind-bending series is at an all-time high. And while I couldn’t get to all the great questions you sent in for Fringe EPs Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman, here’s a glimpse at what they had to say!


When will we know more about whether Fringe will have another season? – Princess D

Official word won’t come for a while. (Series get officially renewed and axed in May at Network Upfronts, but early word has trickled down prior to that event.) And while Wyman said they had been given “an objective, ratings-wise,” which the show has met, “you never know with these things.” “The truth is, we just tell the story we want,” he says. “Also, we’re huge fans of television and have invested many hours in shows — you’ve either been let down or loved the ending … We have a couple of ideas on how, if the worst thing ever happens, we would be able to leave the fans in a way we’d feel comfortable and something, as fans of TV, we’d appreciate.”



We’ve seen this new timeline where both Peters died as children. Could we ever glimpse another timeline where they both survived and grew up? I’d love to see Josh given the chance to play an alternate. — Larissa


Sorry, but you likely won’t get that chance. But there’s a good reason, explains Pinkner. “We can definitively say no. Peter is our point-of-view character in so far is that he is aware that there was another time line that existed before he was pulled out of it. And now he’s planted into a history where he died. But there is not another Peter out there somewhere.” Wyman adds: “It comes back to choices. We have an embarrassment of riches because we have so many choices we could investigate. Right now, the one where Peter didn’t exist is sort of best for us to contrast what we all know.”

Fringe Trailer isn't what it seems

Fringe Trailer isn’t what it seems

Fox has released a new Fringe trailer for the upcoming second half of season 4.

The trailer is in the form of rapid-fire clips from the season, some we’ve seen before, and some we haven’t. It looks like we’re going to be experiencing a lot more of the other universe going forward, which is fine, because this was something sorely lacking in the first half of the season. IMHO, I think it’s time we caught up with Walternate and Fauxlivia.

Interestingly enough, Fox is at least attempting to give the impression that the pace will pick up in the new episodes.

The season so far has been a bit slow, mostly focusing on Olivia and Lincoln, with a lot of character development for everyone. It feels like the beginning of a new show, full of the need to expose the audience slowly to the characters and places. They’re not explaining the basic premises, but it’s clear the writers feel we need a strong introduction to this new world - which leaves me to believe we’ll inevitably be stuck here. This is Peter’s new reality, and he will never get back ‘home’.

One Degree of Fringe: Michael Eklund Going To Alcatraz

Fringe's Michael Eklund and Smallville's Eric Johnson have been tapped to portray escaped prisoners on Fox's new drama Alcatraz, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.


J.J. Abrams' new sci-fi series centers on a cop (Sarah Jones) and a team of FBI agents who track down a group of missing Alcatraz prisoners and guards who have reappeared in the present day after disappearing 30 years earlier.

Michael Eklund won won Best Guest Performance in a Drama Series at The Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia Leo Awards in June 2011 for his portrayal of Milo Stanfield in episode 303, 'The Plateau.'

John Noble and Jasika Nicole To Appear At Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo

John Noble, also known as Denethor in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Jasika Nicole also known as Egypt in Take the Lead, have joined the Calgary Expo's already star-studded line-up.

Fringe, having been on the air since 2008, has become an incredibly successful television series, having been compared to such sci-fi hits as The X-Files and Altered States.

"Both John and Jasika have a lot to offer our convention," states Event Director Kandrix Foong. "Not only are they talented actors but they are both talented artists in their own right, which is something that the Calgary Expo has always worked to support from day one."

Priding itself on supporting the arts, the Calgary Expo strives to bring in local, national and international artists to showcase their work in Artist Alley. The Artist Alley section of the exhibition offers these talented individuals an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to both fans and fellow artists. The Calgary Expo will also be featuring panels and workshops that will include topics such as breaking into the arts industries, portfolio critiques and so much more.

The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo will be held April 27 – 29, 2012 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Ten Actresses To Watch in 2012

Our picks for the actresses who will take next year by storm.

 Jasika Nicole has very little to complain about as a cast member of the show "Fringe." However she may be getting lost in the sea of John Nobel, Anna Torv, and Joshua Jackson (he’s dreamy). Still, over the course of four seasons Nicole has only gotten better. And the writers of "Fringe" have noticed, pushing her to the forefront more and more as things progress. Her portrayal of both Astrid and red universe Astrid (who has at least some form of Autism) deserve more than subtle praise. It may have to wait until she moves on from "Fringe" (let that never happen), but Nicole will be everywhere in 2012.
