Rough-Edged Reset

Neither Here, Nor There

Fringe is back for a fourth season, stoked with a full head of story telling steam. Thanks to the mind breaking removal of Peter from not just a timeline, but existence itself, at the climatic end of Season 3.  Fox fanned those flames even higher with an excellent off season promotional campaign that peaked just before the Season 4 premiere creating a buzz with the slogan, ‘Where is Peter Bishop?’

And the Fringe showrunners continue to demonstrate they are not afraid to break with convention. We are treated to our initial glimpse of a Captain Kirk - Tholian Webbing style, Peter Bishop in the very first scene.

Fringe 401 Review: Neither Here Nor There

“I know what it’s like to have a hole in my life. It’s been there as long as I can remember.”

I always get nervous returning to a show after a long hiatus. Especially a show like Fringe, which produces precisely the type of massive theorizing that I am so resistant to, post-Lost. Will I be pilloried if I don’t spend paragraphs meditating on the significance of the yellow/amber/orange credits? Will I miss a massive “clue,” get it all wrong, and have a bizarre idiosyncratic reaction that no one else can agree with or even understand?

Fringe Science: Parallel Universes, White Tulips, And Mad Scientists

Taken from the Smart Pop website 'About' page:

'Smart Pop Books - On the best in Pop Culture Television, Books, And Film'

'Smart Pop books is a line of smart, fresh funny essays on the best of pop culture tv, books, and film, with particular focus on science fiction and fantasy television and literature.'

From the back cover of Smart Pop's Fringe Science book:

'Fringe has always been more than the sum of its parts-but its parts, too, are worth a closer look.  The show combines a surfeit of mad science, some old school sci-fi flair, and a dash of strawberry-milkshake whimsy to create the challenging, fascinating Pattern that keeps us coming back season after season and universe after universe.'

FRINGE: Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman on the Season Premiere and What’s to Come
September 24, 2011 by Marisa Roffman

Now that both coasts have seen the FRINGE season premiere, what did you guys think?

There was some major groundwork laid for what could be coming up this season, an act of rebellion, a new enemy and some pretty new credits for the show.

As you may have suspected, I had a few questions after I viewed the episode, so I grilled FRINGE executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman to see what they were willing to share…

The Observer makes the choice to once again go against what he’s been told to do in regards to the Bishops. How will that play out and what will the consequences be for him going forward?
Jeff Pinkner: Well obviously we can’t tell you that!

You could tease…
JP: You picked the [right] word. As [J.H. Wyman] alluded earlier, a lot of our storytelling lives in consequences, so there certainly will be some.

In the Fringe episode "Neither Here Nor There", Peter can be seen three times:
  • In the bridge room after the Olivias exchange case files
  • In the lab just before Lincoln shows up
  • In Walter's "bedroom", in the TV screen
