Fringe Ratings & March Madness

The ratings for Fringe have been holding steady. Even after a one-week break, "Os" kept up the 1.5 rating steak alive.

Tonight however, Fringe faces new competition in the form of college basketball - specifically the second day of the second round of the NCAA Div 1 Championship Tournament, aka March Madness.Normally, networks show reruns during popular sporting events like this, but there were plenty of new episodes yesterday, and Fringe will be new tonight.

There are four games that start around 7:00 and could overlap the start of Fringe: Kansas vs. Boston U., North Carolina vs. Longsland, Purdue vs. St. Peter’s, Xavier vs. Marquette, and four other games that could start after those games end: UNL vs. Illinois, Washington vs. Georgia, Georgetown vs. VCU, Syracuse vs. Indiana St.

If you don't care about sports, or college basketball in particular, then carry on watching Fringe LIVE tonight! If you are watching the games, but also want to watch Fringe, the easiest solution, if you have a DVR, would be to watch the early game, watch Fringe when that ends (possibly even live), then watch the late game on delay. However, I know some sports fans will only watch games live. How are you going to handle this?

TVLine Exclusive: Anna Torv Shares Her Take On a Very Spocking Twist

TV Line has an exclusive interview with Anna Torv where she discusses the difficulty of playing a William Bell-inhabited Olivia:

Anna Torv herself was agog when she first learned of the twist – one that forced into her repertoire a third Fringe characterization. “This is not one I had been asking for!” the actress admits with a laugh. “I was in shock for the first day, and then I think I hyperventilated, and then I called John Noble to say, ‘Can you please help me?’”

Torv’s reasons for turning to Walter’s portrayer were twofold. “When you are about to do something you’re kind of freaked out about, you want to be able to look up and know there’s a safe place to go to – and it’s there in John’s eyes,” she explains. And because Noble was in most of Leonard Nimoy’s scenes as “Belly,” Torv says, “I wanted to know what that relationship was like.”

Because she is Australian and already affecting an American accent for her portrayal of Olivia/”Bolivia,” Torv studied tapes of Nimoy’s Fringe work as well as consulted with the show’s dialect coach. Ultimately, though, she had to just jump in with both feet. “I’m no good at doing voices, mimicking people, so once I realized, ‘S—t, I can’t do this,’ you just take a deep breath and go for it.”

Bell’s most unexpected and equally unorthodox “return” promises to have a significant impact on the “machine” storyline that has Peter fretting over his fate as well as that of this universe. As Torv notes, the late genius “has a lot of information that we don’t have, so he’s an awesome resource for the team. And for Walter to have someone to work with is another [advantage].” Or could it be a liability…?

She also touches on the topic of Peter:

And as one might imagine, Olivia’s “possession” puts a pin in her nascent romance with Peter. “Well, yeah,” Torv confirms with a laugh. “I don’t think Peter is going to want to go to bed with William Bell!”

In other words, it’s business as usual for that oft-interrupted relationship. “Every time they sort of get it together,” Torv says, “something gets in the way.”

Torv also discusses the introduction of the Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) in the Blue universe, and how she will handle future twists. You can read the rest of the article at TVLine.com.

Here is a new commercial for the Fringe episode "Stowaway", which airs tonight at 9/8c on FOX.

Tentative Season Three DVD Set Release Date

The DVD On Demand website is reporting that the Season 3 DVD set of Fringe may be available on September 6th, although they state this is early information and may be subject to change.

The website also reports Season 3 will be available in DVD and BluRay format for $59.98 and $69.97, respectively.

'Fringe' execs 'positive about renewal'

The executive producers of Fringe have claimed that they are feeling positive about the show's chances of renewal.

Jeff Pinkner told The Daily Beast that Fox continues to support the sci-fi drama, despite moving it to an unpopular Friday night slot.

"Creatively, Fox has been unbelievably supportive," he insisted. "We have exceeded their expectations on Friday nights."

He added: "Having said that, who knows what the future brings? But, all the signs we're getting are incredibly positive… that we have several seasons of storytelling left."

Co-producer Joel Wyman also suggested that he and Pinkner had never expected Fringe to appeal to a mass audience.

"We knew when we set out that this would not be a massive, popular appeal show, because it's a show that requires you to sit forward and not sit back while you're watching," he suggested. "It's a show that demands attention and thought and rewards it."

The pair previously admitted that they are unconcerned about the show's ratings. The most recent episode attracted 3.76m viewers on Friday night.

Fringe continues on Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

Fringe Sneak Peek #2 317: "Stowaway"

Plus, Anna Torv gave them her opinion about her "new" role:

The actress — who has already been tasked this season with juggling the dual roles of Olivia and Fauxlivia — recently admitted to TVLine’s Matt Mitovich that adding a third personality to her repertoire “was not [a challenge] that I had been asking for!”

The fact that the new role involved channeling a sci-fi legend by the name of Leonard Nimoy made it all the more intimidating. “I was in shock for the first day,” Torv confesses. “I think I hyperventilated — and then I called John Noble [Walter] to say, ‘Can you please help me?’ I wanted to know what he thought, and what that [Walter/William] relationship was like. Plus, John is such a sweetheart, a lovely person to ask.”

Next Episode Clue: The Fringe episode "Subject 13" contained two posters of the periodic table of elements, the standard Mendeleev model, and the much newer Circular model (we won't mention the fact that both versions are too modern for 1985...). In either poster, you can see the symbol for Osmium - "Os", the titular element of the episode:

Fringe Discuss: Olivia Dunham Possesed By William Bell

Welcome to Wednesday, Fringe fans. It's time for our second installment of Fringe Discuss, where we take a look at one hot topic and have you weigh in on your thoughts.

This week's discussion topic:

Olivia Dunham is apparently now possesed by William Bell's conciousness. How do you feel about that? Is it a fun thing, or a bad thing? Is it consistent with things in this series, or too far out there?

There are some fans who have recently verbalized on the internet that they are upset by this development, and yet other fans think it's fun.

Please share your thoughts on this, and remember, it's healthy in Fringe to disagree.

How do you feel about the "Soul Magnet" story line?

Episode Review-'Os'

"What if I fail?"
"You won't fail, Walter."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because you can't."

This is a bridging episode between where Fringe was and where it's heading, and the stakes have never been higher for our favorite mad scientist, Walter Bishop.

Like many in the series so far this is mainly a relationship episode, mostly about that bittersweet relationship that can exist between a father and son.

I always loved Greek mythology as a kid, so in the fourth scene, Walter's immediate reference to Icarus' flying to close to the sun and falling to the earth made me smile. It also made me alert. It wasn't just the famous Daedalus and Icarus father and son story we were talking about here, but most likely the foreshadowing of another father losing a son.(Yikes!)In a quick recap, Daedalus the designing father and his son, Icarus, were trapped in a labyrinth on the island of Crete by an evil king(long story). Daedalus came up with the idea of crafting a set of wings out of feathers and wax with which he and his son could escape. Before they did, Daedalus warned Icarus not to get too close to the ocean lest his wings get wet and malfunction, and not to get too close to the sun, lest the wax of his wings melt and he fall into the sea. Unfortunately, Icarus got carried away by the magnificence of flight and flew too close to the sun. The wax holding his wings together melted, and Icarus plummeted into the sea and drowned. There's no hard proof yet but I can't shake the feeling that this is foreshadowing of the fate of Peter Bishop sometime in the future of the series, not exactly in the manner of this myth, but similarly none the less.

Fringe Now: Alternate Universe Articles - Darpa

The Sprint "Fringe Now" page of the Fox website has a new "Alternate Universe Article", which shows a news article from the Red universe, on one of those ubiquitous Motorola XOOM type devices.

The article is titled "DARPA - The agency is offering a reward for any information leading to the cloak's recovery.":

DARPA again requests help from all citizens. Any information regarding the misplaced experimental invisibility cloak should be directed to the Department of Defense citizen's hotline. The agency is offering a reward for any information leading to the cloak's recovery.

DARPA stands for the "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency", which is a real agency in this universe that is responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. It looks like in the Red-verse, they had already developed an invisibility cloak, while it is still in the research stages here in the Blue-verse.

The Fringe episode "Os" features a wheelchair rugby game. Arley McNeney, the communications coordinator of BC Wheelchair Sports, sent us this behind-the-scenes video from the game:

We were given permission to go behind the scenes during filming to make a video blog. We've got some sneak peeks of the wheelchair rugby storyline, an interview with the inventor of wheelchair rugby (who plays a coach in the episode) and even an interview with Alan Ruck. (Unfortunately, the audio is a little rough, but hopefully it's worth it).
