Nothing is what it appeared to be in this episode, and—as with last week—I’m not sure we have all the answers yet, either. Our Theme of the Week is distraction, but it’s distraction used for deception: not just the characters deceiving each other, but also the writers deceiving us.

Fringe Poll: Alternate Olivia's Nickname?

Theirlivia and Ourlivia

When the subject of 'alternate universes' came up at the end of Season 1, the question of what should we call the people on the other side was risen. For Olivia, the name Alt-livia was used early on, but it seems that in the scripts she is officially referred to as Bolivia (i.e. B-Olivia vs. our A-Olivia). While popular with the writers, it doesn't appear to be much of a fan favorite, especially to 'shippers' who were already referring to the Peter B(ishop) and Olivia relationship with the same name.

However another nickname has become popular - Fauxlivia - as in fake Oliva. But who are we to say that the alternate Olivia is any less real than our Olivia (Theirlivia/Ourlivia?).

I personally prefer the nickname Altlivia, and use it here most of the time. Which nickname do you prefer?

Review Of Fringe 302 'The Box'

If I had been asked to name this episode, I would have entitled it 'Distraction,' because all of the Fringe-related characters were quite distracted, with at least one thing apiece, in 302 except for Astrid, who seemed to be able to pretty much stay on task.

Walter was distracted by, of course, the strained post-reveal relationship he now finds himself in with Peter. Astrid told us Walter has not explained his side of the 'Peter' story to his surrogate son since they returned from 'Over There,' and she demanded he do so immediately, which was very Astrid. As if that wasn't enough distraction, Walter Bishop was distracted by the posthumous reading and revelation of his best friend, William Bell's will. It was quite telling that he did not respond to Peter's asking of what he received, but instead revealed the information instead (twice) to Astrid.

Fringe Easter Eggs: Glyphs in The Box

The Glyphs code in the Fringe episode The Box spelled out ALERT, which combined with last weeks clue spells out "Amber Alert", and seen on this bus in Olivia.

Fringe Episode 302: The Box

The story alternates to the Fringe Team “over here” where they investigate a mystifying case that people are discovered in a trance-like state that ultimately leads to their death. The unlikely suspect: a mysterious box. As Peter and Walter collaborate to study its properties, alternate Olivia presses on and turns up the heat on an unsuspecting Peter. Meanwhile, key information about the future is revealed when Walter and Nina meet at Massive Dynamic for the emotional reading of the last will and testament of William Bell

“You can’t just keep running.”

The Season Two finale left us with Peter and Walter back Over Here, accompanied by a woman alternately called Boliva, Oliviate, or Fauxlivia. Our Olivia (now with auburn hair) is stuck Over There as a pawn in Walternate game/war/vendetta. This episode’s focus on Over There, and on Olivia’s experiences, was exactly as creepy, disorienting, and disturbing as it should have been.

Five reasons we love Fringe's alternate universe

Season three of Fringe returns in just over a week – Eric Stoltz in Back To The Future, anyone?
With Fringe’s third season beginning on 23 September in the United States, we felt compelled to remind you why the series’ alternate universe – which will be featured bi-weekly in the first half of the season – is such an interesting contrast to our own:

1. I’m seeing double!

There’s something extremely fun about the fact that several of the characters have doubles, most notably B-Olivia and Walternate, while Charlie lingers on in the alternative universe. Mainly, though, I just enjoyed this daft – but, undeniably cool – showdown between our Olivia Dunham and her sassier, fringe-bearing alternate:




2. The historical differences

JFK is still alive? Nixon’s head is on coins? The White House was destroyed, but the World Trade Center still stands? Every time a single one of these details was mentioned in the latter half of Fringe’s second season, I couldn’t help but get a little more invested in the story. Hopefully, the producers will have more of these ideas in store for us when the third season begins.

3. Movie titles

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I kind of want to see Superman Vs Batman and Indiana Jones And The Hex Of The Hydra, both of which are currently in theatres in the Fringe universe. This altogether neat touch is exactly why Fringe’s alternate universe is so cool – it works on multiple levels, from characterisation to the pop culture references.

4. The New York skyline

Zeppelins over New York in 2010? Love it. Fringe’s art direction went crazy in the second season, painting a picture of what an alternate universe should look like – close-to-home, but creatively inspired. I can’t wait to get a further glance at it over the course of the third year.

5. Fringe division is an army

Vans? They have Fringe vans? Broyles has a control room? Bloody hell! Fringe seems to have far more backing from the government on the other side, due to the fact that the entire world is falling apart over there (a result of Walter Bishop’s amoral dabbling with the universe). As a result, the division probably has its own stationery, and they’re obviously well known by the public.

Joshua Jackson Talks Olivia, Peter, and daddy issues plus induldges our inner 'Dawson's Creek' geek

We have a confession to make.

We love "Fringe's" Joshua Jackson. From "The Mighty Ducks" to that awful werewolf movie, our admiration has never faltered.

When Zap2it was invited on an exclusive visit to the "Fringe" set, we had no choice but to admit to Jackson that we still crack open our "Dawson's Creek" DVDs on an embarrassingly regular basis.

"Well, I apologize for the fifth season, but other than that, I think we're okay," he teases. We also had to ask him about his recent adventures at Pacey Con, the all-Pacey all the time alternative to Comic Con -- and we teased him a little bit about his unique creek wardrobe.

Once we got our fill of Capeside nostalgia, we jumped right into the "Fringe" universe. The show's September 23 premiere (on FOX at 9 p.m.) is aptly titled "Olivia."

"Season 3 so far has been the season of Olivia," says Jackson, who was working on Episode 5 at the time of the interview. "We have almost what amounts to two shows. We have the over there side, as they're dealing with their version of the Fringe incidents, and the over here side, where we're dealing with ours. I don't write the show, but I know there's inevitably going to be a crunch as we sort of figure out the Olivia question."

Because of the focus on Olivia (Anna Torv) and her alternate, Jackson has found himself with a little bit more time on his hands. "I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm probably the last man smiling on set. It's Friday, I've got two hours of work today, so while I don't get the cool thing of playing two versions of my own character, I do get the even cooler thing of doing eight days of Fringe and eight days off."

Though he's enjoyed spending time with girlfriend Diane Krueger -- and some of his high school buddies, since Vancouver is his hometown -- it doesn't mean Jackson hasn't put some thought into who Peter might have been in an alternate universe.

"I'd like him to be a healthy upstanding citizen," Joshua jokes. "I think if we did the alternate Peter what would've been cool would've been to do the version where the illness sort of crippled him, and instead of being the guy who ran away outside, he would've run away inside. He would sort of be the boy in the bubble. But we'll never know!"

As many fans would agree, Jackson's favorite part of the show is the interaction between Peter and Walter (John Noble). "As if one set of parents wasn't enough of a pain in the a**," he laughs. "We haven't really gotten into it yet, but I'm hoping we get into it heavily, because for me, that's the most interesting stuff that I get to do here. All the Sci-Fi is, fun but it's just big and out there. At the center of it all you have this kick-a** heroine, you know, this woman against all odds, who just is always driving, driving, driving. And then the backdrop to her investigations is this father son dynamic, which is unusual to put into a science fiction show."

Jackson has plenty to say about Peter and Olivia's love life, but he says he finds the ever-evolving relationship between Peter and Walter to be the most interesting part of the show. "It's just a ton of fun to me. There's an infinite amount of stuff to play, John Noble is phenomenal, and I got all of my romantic angsty bulls*** out of the way years ago."

Hey now. We liked that romantic angsty stuff, Pacey Witter.

"Some of it was bulls***," Jackson teases good-naturedly. "But it was glorious bulls***."

We'll take it.
