Fringe Season 1 DVD and Blu-Ray Out Today

      Email Post       9/08/2009 09:08:00 AM

The Fringe Season 1 Blu-ray & DVDs come out today. But, before you head off to your local video store, you may want to consider your "exclusive bonus" options.

Best Buy is featuring an exclusive mini-comic book.

UPDATE: The comic book is essentially a combination of the Fringe Preview Comic from ComicCon 08, some of the Fringe Preview Comic profiles (Charlie, John Scott, and Nina are missing...), and the first Bishop & Bell comic - "Like Minds".

Target is including a bonus DVD which includes the 30 minute Q&A session at PaleyFest 09. You can see a 5-minute preview of the video at the PaleyFest website

If you are planning to order from Amazon, you can order them here:
The DVD box set is very nicely packaged. The slip-cover features a lenticular design that changes between the faces and the symbols when you look at it from different angles. The actual DVDs are housed in a plastic case that allows you to flip throught the seven discs (eight with the bonus DVD). Each of the DVDs are adorned with one of the Fringe Symbols. There is also a 16 page episode guide booklet, with photos and brief summaries.

The Blu-ray is packaged identically to the DVD, with the exception that there are only 5 discs instead of 7. (you don't get the smoke, hand, or apple)

William Bell's New York Post Newspaper

      Email Post       9/05/2009 03:04:00 PM

The Season 1 finale of Fringe "There Is More Than One Of Everything" featured a look into the alternate reality where William Bell is living (hiding?). Bell's office, located in NYC's World Trade Center, suggests that events in this Earth Prime have played out a little differently than in our reality. The most powerful example in Bell's world: instead of the Twin Towers being destroyed on 9/11, it was the White House.

The newspaper shown on William Bell's desk hints at some other "roads not taken". Included in the Fringe Season 2 press kit was a 4-page replica of the newspaper from another world. Below are scans/photos of the entire paper. The "New York News" contains the following alternate realities. There are too many items to cover individually, but some of the more intersting ones are:
  • Former Pres. Kenedy to Address UN - John F. Kennedy is still alive, set to talk to UN about "ex-deceased citizens"
  • NTSB Withholds transcript from Flight 718 Black Box - Flight 718 was the plane that crashed in the Fringe episode The Transformation.
  • Kelvin Genetics Moves HQ to Manhattan - Kelvin Genetics is the company that Dr. Walter Bishop worked for with William Bell.
  • Weather Report - "No corrective action by NWS expected" - Weather can now be controlled by the government
  • Cartoon - Solar, Wind, and Oil made obsolete by Zero-Point Energy - an alternate energy source developed by Massive Dynamic.
  • Genetically Engineered pets
  • FDA approves facial landscaping - a facial reconstruction technique developed by Intrepus. David Esterbrook, the R&D officer at Intrepus is also mentioned. Intrepus and Esterbrook can be seen in the Fringe episode The Cure.
  • Star Trek is still the top movie at the box office :)
  • Daily Horoscopes - all seem to apply to Olivia Dunham...
  • Massive Dynamic Ad - There's no mention of the R.E.M. pod on the Massive Dynamic website...
  • Crossword Puzzle - If anyone wants to solve this and send in the answers, maybe there are some clues hidden in it?
  • Bar code - The bar code on the back page is 09172009 002 - as in 9/17/2009, Season 2

The Best Of the Fringe Tweet-Peat

      Email Post       9/04/2009 10:34:00 AM

Last night's Fringe Tweet-peat featured many insightful tweets from the shows cast (Joshua Jackson & John Noble) and crew (executive producers Jeff Pinkner & Joel Wyman). It was sort of like watching a DVD with the audio commentary turned on - not something you would want to do if it was your first time watching the show, but interesting and insightful if you have already seen the episode.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Last night's Tweet-peat was a ONE-TIME event! There WILL NOT be Twitter updates on future Fringe episodes.

However this Raison d'être got a little lost between the Twitter-gate controversy and some bad Twitter etiquette. (Twitter Tip: When you reply to someone on Twitter, it is often difficult or impossible to find out what the question was, so *please* incorporate the question into your answer! )

Here are some of the best questions, answers, and comments for those that missed show, or just couldn't handle it (contains some mild spoilers):
@lost815 Who was the #Observer talking to at the beginning of the arrival?
Jeff Pinkner: Well, his mother, of course! -- that answer will come in season two

@Primulablue Will there be more clues embedded in the show to figure out this season, such as last season's mysterious icons?
Joel Wyman: Yes, there will be many more clues embedded in the show this year. Keep a CLOSE eye.

@LiasonFan1 Can't wait for the new season. Can u give my Peter a little love life pretty please
Joel Wyman: Peter will FOR SURE have some romantic involvment this season. (But NO nudity, I'm afraid -- they would move us to cable!!!)

@FringeTV Does The Observer work for William Bell?
Jeff Pinkner: No, The Observer does not work for Wm Bell...

@jonxproductions If the Observer is "September" when will we meet "October"?
Jeff Pinkner: We will learn much more about The Observer in the coming season.

@Traciebee When does season 2 take place?
Joel Wyman: We pick up this season only a few hours after the season finale.

@pj179 So how many dimensions are you going to be working with. More than just 2?
Jeff Pinkner: According to string theory there are infinite universes... but we will only be dealing with 2!

@carihindman so will you get to go to the other dimension? Is that were ZFT is?
John Noble: We are still considering who will and when will they cross into the other dimension

Jeff Pinkner: Did you notice the books in the girl's apt? "Childhood's End." Clue?

Jeff Pinkner: "He is here" Makes you wonder who HE is. [William Bell?]

Jeff Pinkner: Look for more #Grayson in season two. He's gonna be VERRRRRY helpful. [Emmanuel Grayson, the Trekkie seen in The Road Not Taken]

John Noble: The alternate reality reveal is critical to the end of Season 1 and ALL of Season 2

@usefultheory Will we ever get an explanation for the short animation/graphics we see before commercials?
Jeff Pinkner: The graphics before commercials are a CODE. Can you break it? [The code has already been cracked]

Joshua Jackson:2 "We should come up with names for all the "alts". Alt-livia, Walter-nate, Alt-strid Farnsworth."
I love the idea on Alternate world nicknames for the characters. So, now we have:

Olivia: Alt-livia
Walter: Walter-nate
Astrid: Alt-strid
Charlie: Scarlie

We just need names for Peter, Nina, Broyles, and Gene. Any Ideas?

Fringe Season 2 Press Kit

      Email Post       9/04/2009 09:00:00 AM

Fringe Season 2 Press KitFox recently sent out Fringe Season 2 press kits to journalists et. al. The large black box which arrived a few days ago was wrapped in a mini-version of the Fringe Season 2 poster. Inside the box were the following items:
  • An introduction letter "signed" by J.J. Abrams, Jeff Pinkner, Joel Wyman, and Akiva Goldsman
  • A DVD of the Fringe Season 2 premiere episode - "A New Day In The Old Town"
  • A crystal cube featuring the faces of Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, and John Noble (?!?)
  • A four-page replica of the "New York Post" newspaper seen in William Bell's office in the S1 finale
  • A typed letter as seen in the Season 2 premiere episode (SPOILER ALERT!)
I can't really talk about the episode without getting all spoilery, but I will say WOW! Here are some photos/scans of some of the items in the box.

Fringe Crystal Cube

The newspaper has TONS of interesting content, which I'll post more about soon. The Season 2 "Spoiler" Letter is something that will be seen in the upcoming season premiere episode, so I have not posted it here, but you can see it over at our new site FringeSpoilers.com.

Also, You can also see photos of Fringe Season 1 Press kit here.

Fringe Tweet-Peat Review

      Email Post       9/03/2009 10:03:00 PM

Based on the fan reaction from tonight's Fringe "Tweet-peat", I would have to say it was an udder disaster. The tweet of the night comes in response to the question "What is your favorite episode?"
@TPaisley I can tell you my least favourite episode. The one where have the screen was covered by twitter.
LOL.

In all honesty, I thought it was an interesting experiment. Of course I've seen the episode several times, so the intrusion into the show didn't bother me at all. For those tuning into this episode, or the show for the very first time, I can see how it would be distracting. I think the level of outrage expressed in the comments is a little over the top, but such is the world of the anonymous internet. (FYI, FringeTelevision.com is a fan-site and is not officially connected to Fringe, Fox, or WB... i.e. it's not our fault! ;)

UPDATE: Joe Early, Fox's vice president of marketing and communications, noted that ... depending on how fans respond, the network might (or might not) add tweets to future repeats. "It would never be done, obviously, on an original episode," Early said.

Please don't worry! As far as I know, this was officially a one time event. Fox press releases only mentioned tonight's episode of Fringe, and tomorrow's episode of Glee. The Fringe season one finale next week should be Twitter-free, and certainly all of the new episodes will be as well.

If you would like to watch tonight's episode tweet-free, it is available for free online at Fox.com/FOD, Hulu.com/Fringe, or even in the Fringe Epsiodes section.

What did you think about the Fringe Tweet-peat?

Fringe Blu-Ray Reviews

      Email Post       8/31/2009 04:34:00 PM

Fringe Season 1 Blu-ray & DVD coversHigh Def Disc News has a very positive review of the "Fringe: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray", which will be released on September 8th, 2009.
VIDEO: translates very nice to Hi-Def ... The amount of detail present in close-ups is at times maybe worth considering 4.5 out of 5 video quality .. much better than the off-air broadcasts on FOX in what I believe is still 720p ... fans of the show that watched it when it aired on FOX are in for a treat here with a whole lot less compression.

AUDIO: the show actually pulls off some impressive (at times) surround sound, with Foley and other noises or background chatter, etc making good use of the rear channels as well as using the subwoofer to deliver bass when needed. The show is pretty intense at times thanks to it’s wonderful Score of original music done by Michael Giacchino (who also did the music for “LOST” among other things).

EXTRAS: Overall, wow, what can I say? There’s a great deal of very detailed, informative and lengthy supplemental material presented here that is sure to keep fans of the show like myself very busy... after you get done watching the season.
HDDN also has 1080p screenshots, and the list of special features:
  • Audio Commentaries - Episodes 1, 3, & 17
  • "The Massive Undertaking" - Behind The Scenes
  • "Dissected Files" - Deleted Scenes
  • "Deciphering the Scene" - Sidebars during the episode
  • "Evolution: The Genesis of Fringe"
  • "Behind the Real Science of Fringe"
  • "The Casting of Fringe"
  • "Robert Orci’s Production Diary"
  • "Fringe Visual Effects"
  • "Unusual Side Effects: Gag Reel"
  • "Gene the Cow"
  • "Fringe Pattern Analysis" (HD) is made up of dissected clips from episodes "The Ghost Network", "Power Hungry", "The Equation", "Safe", "The Transformation" & "Unleashed". This allows the viewer to take a closer look at these six select scenes from this season and then dissect each scene using notes, photos and diagrams.

Update: Here is a new review from Blu-ray.com
