Where to begin? I should probably start with who I am (but I'll keep it short). I had a real blast blogging about another JJ Abrams project, Cloverfield. I enjoyed it so much that, for a time, it became all consuming. As Cloverfield began to wind down I came to the conclusion that my time was best spent all consumed (read: I find what I want to do when I all growed up). With that decided, the only thing left to do was to find a new project worthy of my obsession. That particular quest was short-lived since soon after I started looking I came across this Wired article about Fringe. I was intrigued, and as I dug deeper into the story, I discovered that Fringe was exactly what I was looking for. A show that's been described as a cross between X-Files, LOST and House, and with an overarching mythology to boot. Yeah, it was safe to say I'd found my new reason for being and the seed for fringetv was sown.

Lance Reddick, at this point, is best known as Col. Daniels on The Wire. Or, if you like commercials, as the black guy in the trying-way-too-hard-to-be-cool Cadillac commercials. In roughly a month's time, Lance Reddick will be best known for his recurring role on Lost's fourth season. The full details of his Lost character are unknown, but whatever Reddick has done with the role, J.J. Abrams and the Lost team liked what they saw. Abrams has cast Reddick in his new drama pilot Fringe, which is an X-Files style series about a team of agents who investigate paranormal activity. "Fringe" mixes elements of "The X-Files" and Paddy Chayefsky's "Altered States" with what Abrams calls "a slight 'Twilight Zone' vibe." It will focus on brilliant but possibly crazy research scientist Walter Bishop, his estranged son and a female FBI agent who brings them together. So the question is, which of those many elements tops your list for reasons to watch?
Episodes will explore self-contained mysteries of the paranormal, as well as the relationships between the three leads.
"So much of the story is relatable people in extraordinary situations," Abrams said. "The show is definitely a nod to 'Altered States' and 'Scanners' and that whole Michael Crichton/Robin Cook world of medicine and science."
There'll also be an overriding mythology that will come into play from time to time, as well as a healthy dose of humor.
"It does the stuff my favorite TV shows and movies do, which is to combine genres that shouldn't fit together," Abrams said. "It's definitely meant to scare the hell out of you, but it's also meant to make you laugh... It pushes all the buttons of things we loved from our childhood."
Driving the show will be the Walter Bishop character, a larger-than-life figure who bears some resemblance to the titular character in Fox's "House." In the pilot, he's in a mental hospital.
"Imagine that your father is Frankenstein mixed with Albert Einstein," Orci said. "He's someone who has the mental ability to solve so many problems but is so different that communicating with them is almost impossible." -- Variety

Televisionary: Televisionary Exclusive: First Look at FOX's "Fringe" Pilot Script
By Edward Email Post 3/28/2008 07:21:00 PM Categories: J.J. Abrams, Review, Script
So imagine my zeal when the script for Fringe, which has a thirteen-episode commitment from FOX, literally fell right into my lap. After all, this is a pilot script that reportedly has a $10 million budget and is already one of the highest anticipated entries for the 2008-09 season.
With Fringe, from Warner Bros. Television and Abrams' Bad Robot shingle, the dynamic duo of Kurtzman and Orci have created what can only be described as a millennial take on that seminal FOX series The X-Files, albeit with an added dose of humor and a taut mythology that serves as an undercurrent for this supernatural/crime procedural.
So what's Fringe's pilot script about? Good question. The teaser, in true Lost fashion, opens with ... read more.
IESB.net's Fringe Script Spoiler
By Edward Email Post 3/24/2008 05:58:00 PM Categories: J.J. Abrams, Review, Script
Back on February 4, 2008, IESB ran a script review by Sealcrab. Before he gets into outlining the story, he says:
Source: IESB.net
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Fringe is a miserable effort that I can’t imagine beginning to appeal to anyone. It sort of plays like an awful 80’s low-budget series that would have run for just a few episodes and whose real starring moment would have been being remembered fondly by nostalgic 20-somethings in a bar decades later and then quickly discarded. Except this one doesn’t quite have the charm of being low-budget or being from the 80’s. But it’s got awful. It’s got that in spades.Wow. He sounds angry. And it only gets better. From the looks of it though, he got his hands on the same script as The Other Girl, and she loved it. Go figure.
Let’s put aside the story for a second and let me just say that I have NEVER seen a script so riddled with spelling and punctuation problems. There are misspelled words every other page and every single adjective is preceded by the word ‘fucking’. Characters aren’t serious. They’re ‘fucking serious’ in ‘fucking laboratories’ with ‘fucking melting’ faces. Really.
This script fucking sucks.

Fringe Will Be 'Hard' Science Fiction
By Edward Email Post 3/21/2008 11:30:00 AM Categories: J.J. Abrams, Joshua Jackson
In a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, Fringe star Joshua Jackson said, among other things:
It's the science side of science fiction, so it takes the physical world that we live in and then sort of goes just past that edge. For those of you unfamiliar with the term Hard Science Fiction, it basically treats the science as interesting in and of itself--and therefore worthy of development--from consistency to plausibility--just as if it were one of the main protagonists of the story.
Fringe takes the world that we all live in and says, 'All right, so what you know about this cup you don't actually know, because if you look at it from over here, it's something entirely different.' And that will be the thrust of the show: that the physical world that we live in, without the addition of any magic or any supernatural, is far more than we all see it as being.
