Interview With Jasika Nicole
By JuliDG Email Post 7/29/2010 07:23:00 PM Categories: Jasika Nicole, Season 3, Spoiler
The always lovely Jasika Nicole spoke to USAWeekend about the third season of Fringe, and told us about what is comming for Astrid and Altstrid.
The Interview may contain mild spoilers...
Alternate worlds are going to be an even larger aspect of the Fox sci-fi series Fringe when the show returns for a third season on Sept. 23. That means playing a totally different character for most of the cast, including Jasika Nicole. She worried in the beginning about how long her role, a junior federal agent named Astrid Farnsworth, would hang around. “I still take the PDF file and I search for Astrid and I make sure she doesn’t die. You never know!” she says. But her patience has paid off over that slow build, getting to play both Astrid in our world and the very cold and enigmatic Astrid of the alternate universe. She talked at Comic-Con last week about the differences between those characters and what family member she looked to for inspiration for alterna-Astrid, so read below for her thoughts.
When the third season opens, Nicole says, the loyal and warm Astrid we’ve seen for a couple years now will have a closer bond than ever with Walter Bishop (John Noble), since he’s lost the support system he’s had because of the revelations to his son Peter (Joshua Jackson) and FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv). She also says we’ll get to see Astrid’s home this season. “Her apartment is like a hippie den, and she’s got like eight rugs on the floor and all these lamps and rich colors. I would never have known her apartment looked like that,” Nicole says, laughing.
This year, though, she has a whole other character to talk about with the alternate-universe Astrid. Viewers had a chance to meet her in her beret and combat boots briefly in the May season finale, but they’ll see a whole lot more starting in September. “She’s tricky but she’s really cool. She’s so guarded that it’s a little bit easy to play her because I don’t have to relate to anybody. It’s like performing monologues, which is an interesting thing to do in a television show,” Nicole says.
“It’s really just playing a completely different charter, almost in a different show. The alternate universe is so different — none of the characters she interacts with are the same. It’s like doing a regional theater show for summer stock where you’re doing seven different shows at the same time, and you’re rehearsing one show during the day and performing another one at night.”
Nicole’s favorite aspect of playing alterna-Astrid is that she doesn’t make eye contact with anyone, something only sharp-eyed viewers aw in the season finale. “She speaks toward them and she’ll look at them, but not when she’s speaking,” Nicole explains. “That’s really funny to play because people get uncomfortable when I’m doing that in a scene. She doesn’t really respond to their facial expressions or what they’re doing. She’s not interested in that. She’s only interested in relaying the information that she has for them.
“That was something my sister does that I always thought was really interest. She’s not quite as high functioning as Asperger’s, and that was one of the first things that we knew that something was up with her: She would talk to you looking at the side of you, and then she would look at you, and then when she’d start talking again, she would look away. We just thought it was a quirky thing, and come to find out that’s one of many, many different things that kids who have autism tend to get. I’m trying to not incorporate everything about my sister, but just things that I know really well to take from my own experience and put into alternate Astrid.”

Exclusive: Jasika Nicole Interview, Part 1
By Adam Morgan Email Post 4/25/2009 08:54:00 PM Categories: Exclusive, Interview, Jasika Nicole

The always charming and fun-loving Jasika Nicole, who plays too-cute lab assistant Astrid on Fringe, recently took the time to answer some of your very own submitted questions in an exclusive interview with FringeTelevision.com. Here's part one!
Adam Morgan
Adam Morgan
Lots of fans want Astrid to get more screen-time, to be developed more as a character, like Charlie was in Unleashed. Will we get to see more of Astrid in future episodes?
Jasika Nicole
I can't really say, 'cause I have no idea what the plans are for any of the characters beyond what we have shot in season 1. Astrid doesnt go through any life-changing transformations before the season ends, but she does get out of the lab again, which was exciting for both me and Astrid...I bet she gets lonely cooped up in that lab all the time, and even though she is learning a lot and certainly excited to be under Walter's wing (or have him under hers, depending on how you look at it), she probably has days where she just wants to be in the sunshine.
Adam Morgan
Tell us one thing about Astrid that we don't know.
Jasika Nicole
She and Walter perform improv musical numbers for each other when Peter isn't around.
Adam Morgan
You've stated in other interviews that you believe Astrid could be a double-agent of some kind. What gave you that idea, and do you still believe it?
Jasika Nicole
Anything is possible with this show; just 'cause it hasn't happened in this season doesn't mean it isn't something that won't happen in the future. That's the great part about working on a television show where you don't know what the end is supposed to look like--so many things can happen (have to happen) in the middle, and as an actor you just have to be ready for everything. Sure, Astrid could still end up being someone working on the "other" side of the Pattern at some point. Either that, or she will have to bust through like a superhero when the main team's options have all been exhausted and save everyone's life. I think she has access to way too much information for her to not be integral in a life-or-death situation at some point. The question is, is she going to be rooting for the life or the death part? Can you tell you I'm putting feelers out for a spin-off already? Something like Farnsworth: The Fringe Chronicles.
Adam Morgan
What's been your favorite scene to shoot so far? How about your favorite episode?
Jasika Nicole
My favorite scene is the episode with the animal rights activists [Unleashed], when the worms bust out of a cadaver's chest after he has been impregnated by the monster. During the first take, my instinct was to catch myself mid-hurl, but on the next take I wasn't sure if it read for the camera so I didnt do it anymore. Then when I saw the episode weeks later, I was super excited to find that they had kept my hurl! Ha! It was a small victory for me; I usually play Astrid very safe, 'cause she is always so calm, collected and cool. But she has to have a breaking point, you know? Worms oozing out of a dead guy's chest? That seems as good a breaking point as any, and when the director was editing, I guess he agreed.
My favorite episode is the finale, which has not aired yet, but the script was so good and I am dying to see what its going to look like after the VFX.

What's the funniest thing that happened on set this season?
Jasika Nicole
No way I could come up with one funniest thing. We have a good time on set every single day without fail, so it's easier to pinpoint the least funny thing that happened on set. And that would be when our AD, Gary Rake, slipped on some ice during an outside shoot, passed out and broke his ankle in several places.
Adam Morgan
Is Lance Reddick really a gigglebox?
Jasika Nicole
Who told you that? I can't say I have ever seen him "giggle", but he is a beautiful man with a warm, comfortable kind of energy, so he's always smiling. Several weeks ago Lance and I were at the premiere party for the Gen Art Festival and they had the most amazing DJ there, and before long we were both out on the dance floor dancing to Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. He's got some nice moves, very graceful and lovely to watch. I wish I had more scenes with him so that I could challenge him to a dance fight on set. [Click here to watch Jasika and Lance dancing!]
Adam Morgan
We know Olivia was recruited by Broyles for specific reasons. Do you think Astrid has similarly unique qualifications for her position?
Jasika Nicole
She definitely brings something special to the team, because not only is Astrid qualified in regards to her skills, but she is also a very fast learner, and because these horrific things that are happening all the time are usually ticking time-bombs, quick thinking is certainly an asset. But I started thinking this week after I saw this last episode...what if Broyles knew about Olivia's special Cortexiphan powers even before she did, and thats why she is involved with the Fringe team in the first place? If that ends up being true, I dont think Astrid's connection is as similar as I initially thought. But at the same time, there must be a reason that Astrid has been entrusted with this powerful information by this powerful man. I wonder when I (we!) will figure that out?
Adam Morgan
Describe a typical day of shooting in the lab set for us. It sounds like you guys have a lot of fun!
Jasika Nicole
Animal trainers, buttons to push, knobs to pull, lots of fried food, John Noble dancing a jig, and brand new script pages.
Adam Morgan
What's the biggest difference between you and Astrid?
Jasika Nicole
Astrid is smart in exactly all the ways I am not. And I would imagine that I am smart in all the ways she isn't; together we would make one completely awesome curly-headed person. She is my doppleganger who didn't doodle in science class and made it through calculus with flying colors. But she's got nothing on my Show Choir awards and AP English skills.
Adam Morgan
How do you feel about the move to Vancouver?
Jasika Nicole
I'm not a native New Yorker, I moved here six years ago from Birmingham, Alabama. I don't want to leave because New York is where I am comfortable and where I've grown a lot, but I'm also very excited for the adventure of living in a new place and experiencing new things. I'm hoping Vancouver will turn me into an outdoorsy person. I'm also hoping that living there and not being concerened with the social obligations one has when they are in their favorite place with their favorite people, will give me much more time to write and draw.
Adam Morgan
How's Gene doing? Will you miss New York Gene when he's invariably replaced by a Vancouver Gene? And what's your favorite Gene memory?
Jasika Nicole
Gene, I'm sure, is fine, on a farm somewhere and enjoying her life like she does every other day...she only comes to set once in a while, so while her presence seems heavy in certain episodes, she only takes a day to film her work. We had one cow in Toronto, a different cow in New York, and now we will have a different one in Vancouver. The cows are all sweet, but so far they haven't really had any distinguishing characteristics for me, maybe cause I don't work with them all as closely as John does.

AE: Are you filming now in October?Clutch Magazine: Life on the Fringe: An Interview with Jasika Nicole
JN: Yes, we are starting Episode 9, I believe, this week, and of course we got picked up for the back nine episodes. So in January, we will finish our 22-episode season. We’re not even quite halfway through yet, which is really exciting. I can’t wait to find out what else is going to happen!
AE: Where do you film?
JN: We film in Long Island City in Queens, at Silvercup Studios East. It’s very close, which is wonderful. I didn’t have to move away from New York City.
C: So… Astrid Farnsworth? Really, that’s this sister’s name? You really don’t look like an Astrid. You should be wearing really tiny glasses or something.
JN: You know why that’s cool? It makes her name super memorable.
C: Despite the fact that Walter (John Noble as Dr. Walter Bishop) can never remember her name.
JN: Actually, I just made the connection that she has such an unusual name, yet Walter STILL can’t remember it. In rehearsal the other day, Walter called my character Afro. Which was great, but he said “NO, they’ll come knocking down my door and they’ll think I’m a racist!” [laughs] I think it would be awesome, considering I kind of have an afro.

Fringe: Jasika Nicole Hints at Astrid's Secrets
by Mickey O'Connor
Oct 21, 2008 07:16 AM ETWhen Jasika Nicole auditioned for J.J. Abrams' Fringe (Tuesdays, 9 pm/ET, Fox), she was told it was for a sci-fi series that incorporated humor. As FBI Special Agent Astrid Farnsworth, though, Nicole isn't exactly given a lot of the punchlines, saddled as she is with doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the lab of mad scientist Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble). With a background in musical theater and a talent for drawing (check out her work, including an autobiographical comic, on her website), Jasika (it's pronounced jah-SEEK-uh) talks to us about being intimidated by Noble, why Astrid returned to work in the lab and her theory about the identity of the elusive William Bell.
TVGuide.com: What's a sensible gal like Astrid doing with this bunch of crazies?
Jasika Nicole: I think Astrid is really riveted by Olivia Dunham [who is played by Anna Torv]. I think for any woman starting out in her career, Agent Dunham is an exceptional role model. On Fringe, she is juxtaposed with the doctor, who is also brilliant, but was in an institution. I imagine that Astrid is trying to learn the balance of going after what you want in your career without having it be your whole life. Literally 15 minutes ago I was talking with Anna Torv about needing a scene to show that Astrid has a life outside of this lab.
TVGuide.com: So what's coming up for Astrid? Will she have a larger role in future episodes?
Nicole: She's always doing a lot of lab work, always doing a lot of filing and interjecting at appropriate moments. Episode 107 [which airs on Nov. 11] is really intense. [SPOILER REMOVED]
TVGuide.com: Do you have a backstory for Astrid?
Nicole: So far I've learned that she's really, really smart, has a brain for science even though that isn't what she studied. [SPOILER REMOVED]
TVGuide.com: Tell me about working with John.
Nicole: John is the funniest guy. I thought he would be very serious, and I was intimidated when I first met him, and I'm pretty sure he made fun of me because, you know, he likes to keep the mood light. Seeing him work is fascinating; it's like taking a master class. I just like to sit back and watch how he processes information and take notes. He's able to do a scene a million different ways within the span of five minutes because he's so able to connect with the artistic vision everyone has for this show.
TVGuide.com: But why can't Dr. Bishop ever remember Astrid's name?
Nicole: I wonder if it just started out as one joke, and it just ended up being so charming and funny that they kept it going. It's hard for me not to laugh; John's reading on it is so funny. We have this running joke where we're always trying to think of new names for Astrid. We were rehearsing a scene the other day and he called me "Afro," and I died. I fell on the floor laughing. He's also called me "Aspirin" and "Ostrich."
TVGuide.com: And when he finally does pay attention to her, he attacks and sedates her. Why do you think Astrid came back to the lab?
Nicole: At first, it was discouraging that they didn't put anything in that told you why Astrid returned. But I think that it sets up something to happen later. [SPOILER REMOVED]
TVGuide.com: Personally, I think that Astrid is much more than she appears, that maybe she has some kind of special skill or power that's related to Dr. Bishop's work.
Nicole: I think that is very, very possible. The best theory I heard so far is that I am William Bell.
TVGuide.com: Wanna hear the best William Bell theory that I heard? That he's Blair Brown's prosthetic arm!
Nicole: [Laughs] That's beautiful. At night, it leaves her body and goes out and does bad things.

Jasika Nicole Online
By Edward Email Post 8/29/2008 11:17:00 AM Categories: Fringe, J.J. Abrams, Jasika Nicole
Jasika Nicole (Astrid Farnsworth) wasn't on the Fringe panel at Comic-Con, but in an interview posted today on MTV's Splash Page, Jasika reveals a few talents that suggest she would have felt right at home in a room full of geeks.
‘Fringe’ Star Jasika Nicole Does Online ‘Magic’ For Autobiographical Comic
Jasika Nicole does it. Amber Benson does it. And Jasika Nicole from the new J.J. Abrams television show “Fringe” does it — online. (They’re all actresses who write comics.)
“I like to write and I’m an illustrator and I have a blog,” Nicole said, “and I thought, ‘Maybe this is the link to put it all together.’”
Nicole’s autobiographical comic “High Yella Magic” can be found here, for now, until she re-does her website. She almost signed with a publisher once, but decided to stay independent after the publisher wanted to change “a lot of things,” she said, “and I wasn’t ready for that.”
“They were like, ‘You shouldn’t talk about this,’ or, ‘This should be your angle,’” she said. “It’s not about an angle. It’s about my experience.”One of the comics is a take on navigating the audition process when you’re not a “beauty queen” or a “tiny model.” (She makes goofs like having unmanicured toes when she shows up for a Dr. Sholl’s commercial, and chapped lips for a Chapstick ad). One is about how she exhibited a talent for drawing at the age of four, and upset her teachers because she was drawing her mother naked. Another is about having a younger sister who is autistic. “They’re not serious sob stories,” Nicole said. “They’re funny.”
Nicole counts Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic,” Mike Carey’s “Lucifer,” and Bill Willingham’s “Fables” as her inspiration to write, draw, pencil, and ink everything herself. She currently posts one new comic a week, but she has more in the wings.
“It’s nice to be able to have something I have complete creative control over,” she said, “as opposed to acting, where you’re just along for the ride and waiting to see what happens. I have so much fun doing it, and I’ll always be able to take out a piece of paper and a pencil and be able to draw something.”
