Fringe Easter Egg In Bones?

      Email Post       4/22/2011 03:32:00 AM

In last night's episode of Bones, there were a few subtle nods to Fringe:
  • "Walter vs. FBI" was written on the chalkboard
  • A character named Walter, who is jokingly called Wally
  • Booths ring a bell

Fringe Easter Egg Roundup for "Os"

      Email Post       3/17/2011 03:10:00 AM

Here are some recurring "Easter egg" screen shots from the Fringe episode "Os":

The Observer can be spotted near the Massachusetts Metal Depository, observing the crime scene amongst the crowd. You can see him clearly walking up to the scene (with umbrella!) in this promotional photo.

Hidden Glyphs: I did not see any hidden glyphs in this episode. If you find any in the "Os" screenshots, let  us know!

Next Episode Clue: The Fringe episode "Subject 13" contained two posters of the periodic table of elements, the standard Mendeleev model, and the much newer Circular model (we won't mention the fact that both versions are too modern for 1985...). In either poster, you can see the symbol for Osmium - "Os", the titular element of the episode:
KRICK: I work in aeronautics. A few months ago, I was contracted to develop a new alloy for military aircraft-- A metal dense enough to keep pilots safe from ground fire, but still allow for flight. I wasn't having much success. And then I combined two elements. Rare elements.
WALTER: Osmium and lutetium.
KRICK: And that's when it happened. I'd combined two of the densest elements on earth, and somehow the result was a new molecule... A molecule lighter than air.

Jorge Garcia (Hurley from LOST) On Fringe

Jorge Garcia made a cameo appearance in the Fringe episode "Os", as a Massive Dynamic security guard. Although he had a short scene, he got to work with the amazing John Noble, and it looks like they had fun.

Here are also a couple of behind the scene photos from Jorge's blog Further Dispatches

More Easter Eggs for Fringe Episode "Subject 13"

      Email Post       3/05/2011 09:58:00 PM

Here are a couple of more Easter Eggs from the Fringe episode "Subject 13".

The first is the video above, comparing the puzzle Walter frustrates young Olivia with, to the puzzle seen in the Alias episode "The Indicator". As you can see the puzzles are very similar, due in no small part to the fact that Fringe executive producer Jeff Pinkner also wrote that episode of Alias.

The second is a comparison of the Olivia "explosion" in "Subject 13" to another fire "incident" that we saw in the Fringe episode "Jacksonville":

It's interesting to note that the fire does not come any where near young Nick. Either she unconsciously protected her Jacksonville experiment buddy, or he was immune to her powers because he was also a Cortexiphan kid.

The footage we see in "Jacksonville" is from a much younger Olivia than the one we see in "Subject 13"

UPDATE: A couple of more interesting facts to ponder:

"Subject 13" was the first episode not to star Anna Torv. In fact, the only regular cast member in the episode was John Noble - no Anna Torv or Joshua Jackson (although we did see young Olivia and Peter). Plus no Jasika Nicole, Lance Reddick, Blair Brown, or even Gene.

According to the Fringepedia "death count" page, "Subject 13" was the first episode where no one died.

Here are some recurring "Easter egg" screen shots from the Fringe episode Subject 13:

The Observer can be spotted walking in the Bishop Dynamics lobby, just as Walternate arrives.

Hidden Glyphs: If you want to count cartoon versions of the Fringe glyphs, then butterflies, seahorses and frogs can be found near the Jacksonville Family Daycare Center entrance. There are also some seahorses on the Bishop family's fridge.

ELIZABETH BISHOP: You know tulips don't usually grow in areas like this.

YOUNG PETER: Well, then what are they doing here?

ELIZABETH BISHOP: A professor who was working here missed them, so he imagined a tulip that would grow in this climate, and he invented it. He used his brain and his imagination to turn the world into what he wanted it to be. How would you change the world if you could, Peter? What would you wish for? YOUNG OLIVIA: Hi. How'd you find me?

YOUNG PETER: I guess tulips don't normally grow around here. [paper rustling]

YOUNG OLIVIA: But... how'd you know I'd come here?

YOUNG PETER: Because it's the only drawing that looked happy.

Next Episode Clue: As we mentioned in the last Easter egg roundup, the episode "6B" contained an abundance of tulips, which were in fact references to "Subject 13". In this episode, a very special field of white tulips is the location that young Peter visits twice. Once driving in the car with his mother, and once when he finds Olivia. The White Tulip was also a very important symbol for Walter Bishop:
"I, too, attempted the unimaginable, and I succeeded. I crossed into another universe, and took a son that wasn't mine. And since then, not a day has passed without me feeling the burden of that act. I'm going to tell you something that I have never told another soul. Until I took my son from the other side, I had never believed in God. But it occurred to me... that my actions had betrayed him and that everything that had happened to me since was God punishing me. So now I'm looking for a sign of forgiveness. I've asked God for a sign of forgiveness. A specific one, a white tulip.". - Walter Bishop (to Alistair Peck)  in White Tulip.

Fringe Books: What Young Olivia Was Reading in "Subject 13"

The book that young Olivia is reading in "Subject 13" is called Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin.

Wikipedia has some interesting things to say about the book:
The title Winter's Tale is a reference to the similarly named Shakespeare play. In that play, as in this book, a major character disappears for years, only to return after a long and unexplained absence, unharmed, transformed, and redeemed.[Peter?]
...
Winter's Tale is a 1983 novel by Mark Helprin. It takes place in a mythic New York City, markedly different than our own.[Alternate Universe?]
...
New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality.[Is this why it snowed in the tulip field?]
The most interesting part of the book is name of the main character Peter Lake!

FYI, the paperback edition has a different cover, but if you want the exact same book Olivia is reading, hardcover versions with the same cover are available in the Amazon used books section.

Fringe Retro Title Sequence Returns

      Email Post       2/25/2011 11:34:00 PM

The Fringe episode "Subject 13" is a flashback that takes place in 1985. To match the style of the era, location titles and the Fringe title sequence was given a new look. The same title sequence was also seen in the the Fringe episode "Peter".

The Tron-style graphics are complimented by retro "fringe science" subjects. While these subjects may have seemed "fringe" at the time of Back To The Future and Weird Science, every one (with maybe the exception of cold fusion) is now considered mainstream science.

One thing that seems to be missing from this old school sequence is the "Observers Are Here" quote.

Screenshots of every single frame from the title sequence are available at FringeFiles.com.
