TVLine Exclusive: Anna Torv Shares Her Take On a Very Spocking Twist

      Email Post       3/18/2011 01:06:00 PM

TV Line has an exclusive interview with Anna Torv where she discusses the difficulty of playing a William Bell-inhabited Olivia:
Anna Torv herself was agog when she first learned of the twist – one that forced into her repertoire a third Fringe characterization. “This is not one I had been asking for!” the actress admits with a laugh. “I was in shock for the first day, and then I think I hyperventilated, and then I called John Noble to say, ‘Can you please help me?’”

Torv’s reasons for turning to Walter’s portrayer were twofold. “When you are about to do something you’re kind of freaked out about, you want to be able to look up and know there’s a safe place to go to – and it’s there in John’s eyes,” she explains. And because Noble was in most of Leonard Nimoy’s scenes as “Belly,” Torv says, “I wanted to know what that relationship was like.”

Because she is Australian and already affecting an American accent for her portrayal of Olivia/”Bolivia,” Torv studied tapes of Nimoy’s Fringe work as well as consulted with the show’s dialect coach. Ultimately, though, she had to just jump in with both feet. “I’m no good at doing voices, mimicking people, so once I realized, ‘S—t, I can’t do this,’ you just take a deep breath and go for it.”

Bell’s most unexpected and equally unorthodox “return” promises to have a significant impact on the “machine” storyline that has Peter fretting over his fate as well as that of this universe. As Torv notes, the late genius “has a lot of information that we don’t have, so he’s an awesome resource for the team. And for Walter to have someone to work with is another [advantage].” Or could it be a liability…?
She also touches on the topic of Peter:
And as one might imagine, Olivia’s “possession” puts a pin in her nascent romance with Peter. “Well, yeah,” Torv confirms with a laugh. “I don’t think Peter is going to want to go to bed with William Bell!”

In other words, it’s business as usual for that oft-interrupted relationship. “Every time they sort of get it together,” Torv says, “something gets in the way.”
Torv also discusses the introduction of the Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) in the Blue universe, and how she will handle future twists. You can read the rest of the article at TVLine.com.

Anna Torv Conference Call, Part 1
FringeTelevision had a chance recently to join the FOX conference call with Anna Torv. They were filming on-location, working on a hostage situation at a train station. She commented that there were a lot of cop cars and it was plenty noisy. She only had a few minutes before a knock on the door interrupted her call and she was brought back to the set to continue filming.

The first question Anna was asked about the acting challenges of playing two different characters---that are potentially the same character. She commented about the personal conflicts the characters have and will be faced with even more so when they get home.

The interview continued with a joke about how Anna must like having a great amount of job security in playing two Olivia’s.

Sad news in the Fringe family. Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham) has split with her husband, former Fringe co-star Mark Valley (John Scott). According to People magazine:
After a secret wedding over the holidays in 2008, Anna Torv and Mark Valley, who costarred on Fox's Fringe, have just as quietly ended their marriage, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The two tied the knot in a small ceremony in December 2008, and separated a few months ago.
Anna and Mark met on the set of Fringe and secretly married before the end of the first season, announcing their marriage to the cast and crew during the filming of the season finale.

Our best wishes go out to both Anna and Mark.

Fringe Anna Torv photos from Esquire: Woman We LoveFringe Anna Torv photos from Esquire: Woman We LoveFringe Anna Torv photos from Esquire: Woman We Love

Esquire magazine has selected Anna Torv for their upcoming "Women We Love" article - which is essentially a collection of random quotes and racy photos. The only quote even remotely Fringe related has to do with script dialogue:
Sometimes there will be a line in the script and I just can't imagine saying it. I'll ask an American and they'll say, "Oh, yeah. That's how we say it." We just say things differently in Australia — like torch. I'd ask, "Can I have the torch?" It seems to fall flat when I say, "Can I have the flashlight?"
The March 2010 issue of Esquire should be on shelves soon, but you can see more photos after the jump, or at Esquire.com.

Also, check out the Fox Anna Torv promotional photos from last season.
