Fringe Review: Worlds Apart

“Every war has a cost.”

Now we know. No—that’s not right. Now we think we know Jones’s master plan, and we think we know his motives (basic megalomaniacal world destruction, with animal accompaniment). What matters more, however, is the damage he has caused. Not earthquake damage, although of course that is significant, but damage to the sense of community that has, for the past few episodes, been growing between the two worlds.

Fringe Renewed For Fifth Season!

The announcement was made by Fringe executive producer Joel Wyman (@JWFringe), and was accompanied by this Fringe Season 5 trailer!

UPDATE: Here is the official press release, after the break:

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign For 420,"Worlds Apart"-Worlds Apart

      Email Post       4/26/2012 11:35:00 PM

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign For 420, "Worlds Apart"-Worlds Apart
The last Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign, sponsored by Fringenuity on April 20th was quite successful.
Thanks to Fox Broadcasting's help, the entire episode aired with the Fringenuity hash tag "FightTheFuture" on the screen instead of #Fringe, for the fifth time in the show's history!

The group, Fringenuity, hosts the Friday night Twitter/GetGlue campaigns.
Fringe Television is proud to support Fringenuity's efforts to promote "Fringe" in as many social media venues as possible, and asks for your help.

**SEASON 5 UPDATE:As of this evening, FOX has officially picked up Fringe for a fifth season composed of 13 episodes!**

Tomorrow night we want to continue our social media domination and thank FOX, the show's sponsors, the executive producers, cast, and crew by trying to get the hash tag #WorldsApart to trend on Twitter starting at 8PM Eastern.
That's 1 hour before the new episode airs, and then again at 8PM Pacific time.

Why keep tweeting? Because we know that ratings isn't just about Nielsen boxes anymore. TV networks and their contractors pay attention to which TV shows are 'socially-active' and our show Fringe is very socially-active on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other venues.

Why continue this effort? Last Friday's event catapaulted Fringe in multiple social media platforms, and we would like to keep Fringe visible in these platforms in the weeks and months ahead.

Please consider joining in tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern and 8PM Pacific to support your favorite show by signing into Twitter and using the #WorldsApart hash tag.

If you are not familiar with Twitter, you can create an new account rather painlessly at http://www.twitter.com/.

For more information on this week's special Fringe Twitter event visit the Fringenuity website here.

You can also adopt a special icon from 69 different designs(!), and/or 3 lovely banners for this event by clicking here or here.

An important reminder: Please do not tweet with the #WorldsApart hash tag until 8PM Eastern, to increase the likelihood of trending! And volume helps, so tweet slowly, and tweet often after the start time Friday night! Also, retweet tweets that you like, that have the # hash tag.

Let's dominate Twitter Friday night, and make our hash tag and our show trend worldwide! Again!

***ButWait! There's more!***

Another social network platform that needs our attention on Friday nights is GetGlue.com.
If you are not familiar with getglue.com it is a very clever advertising site married to social networking.
GetGlue merges fans with their interests, and their interests' sponsors.

If you have a GetGlue account you can "check-in" to Fringe. The shows that get the most check-ins are highly visible to the networks and the show's sponsors.

It is recommended you start checking into GetGlue closer to the start time of Fringe to increase the chance of trending there. For the last several Friday nights we made Fringe the #1 checked in show on GetGlue!

Fringenuity is asking that this Friday, your first check-in to one of Fringe's sponsors on GetGlue, ie. Nissan Leaf, and thank them for supporting Fringe. Think it doesn't make a difference? Guess again.

For the last few weeks, due to our GetClue check-ins, the Nissan Leaf was one of the most checked-in sponsors on the site.

Let’s make it a combined effort to not only check-in to the show, but to also check-in to the show’s advertisers and comment, “Thank You for your support of Fringe! @FringeOnFox”

If you don’t have a GetGlue account, make one at http://www.getglue.com/.
You can post your check-ins to Twitter and/or Facebook.

The more activity, the better, as this may also get other Fringies involved in the GetGlue check-ins.

GetGlue also has convenient mobile phone aps for iphone, Android, and Blackberry.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Please, enjoy the new episode tomorrow night, and support high visibility of your show by tweeting on Twitter with the special hash tag, and checking into Fringe at GetGlue and thanking at least 1 of Friday night's many sponsors. Your efforts will not go unrewarded, and it is quite likely these actions helped us acquire a Season 5!

Fringedom, the time is now to thank FOX, the show's sponsors, and everyone affiliated with Fringe by watching "Worlds Apart" LIVE tomorrow night, and joining in this Twitter/GetGlue event!

Jayne Nelson of SFX explains why Fringe Division is the best in its league…

It’s the show that plays fast and loose with the laws of physics, the laws of gravity and just about every other scientific law there is. Professor Brian Cox [think Bill Nye] would not approve . But if you take off your lab coat, put your feet up on the sofa and forget scientific accuracy, Fringe is one of the most brilliantly-imagined fantasy dramas to come along in ages – it even has parallel universes to choose from!

Here is the list of 20 things SFX loves about Fringe:

  2. Walter/Walternate

  4. There’s A Cow In It
  5. Peter Bishop

“Resistance must take place at any opportunity.”

This was a great episode, almost despite itself. An hour devoted to people we have never met, this close to what might be the final episode of the show ever? And yet it was touching, interesting, and extremely well done, just like all Fringe episodes are. But while “Letters of Transit” was a great episode, I’m still not sure that I’m on board with the direction this season has taken, or with the place of this episode in the master plan.

'Fringe': Josh Jackson and John Noble talk Season 5 and the Peter and Walter dynamic
By Carina Adly MacKenzie

April 13, 2012 4:36 PM ET

"Fringe" fans are used to seeing the dynamic between our favorite characters shift suddenly and dramatically -- and while it's always fun to explore new versions of old friends, we've found ourselves missing that old banter between Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Walter (John Noble) this season.

"We had to fight to get the old dynamic back," Noble told Zap2it when we caught up with him at the opening of Warner Bros' Television Out Of The Box exhibit at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills. "As characters, and as people, because Josh and I love playing it."

Now that Peter knows he's been home this entire time and that Walter and Olivia are his Walter and Olivia, Jackson tells us that Peter will continue to grow more comfortable with his father. "So far as Peter's concerned, these are all his people now. All of the barriers between Peter and Walter should then be removed," Jackson says. "Even though Walter has to come out of his shell, still, a little bit, there's no reason for that father-son love to not be there. It's not the central portion of our story toward the end of the season, but he and I love doing it, and it's a good portion of the story."

"The payoff is really there at the end of the season," Noble says, promising a more familiar relationship between father and son. "You do see that again."

Speaking of fathers and sons -- Jackson promises that fans are about to see the fall-out from the revelation that Peter had a son. "You're about to find out," he teases, with a very sly look on his face. (Seriously, just watch the video below.) You won't want to miss tonight's new episode at 9 p.m. EST on FOX.

Fans are anxiously awaiting news as to whether "Fringe" will be returning after this year for Season 5. "There are a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings out there, between us and FOX," Noble says. "I know that the FOX executives love the show. It's just a matter of business, and it's very close, because we're an expensive show."

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!

Question: As a Fringe fan, I have participated in the Twitter campaigns on Friday night as I watch the show, but I can not help wondering if these type of campaigns really make any difference. Many viewers seem to DVR Fringe or wait until it comes out on Netflix, and no fan campaign is going to change these viewing habits enough for the nightly ratings to drastically change. So do you think these campaigns work when there is little increase in ratings? — Mandy

Matt Roush: The networks take many factors into account these days when deciding the fate of a cult "bubble" show like Fringe. Social media (and the attention paid by more traditional media) are playing a role as well, but to spare you from my generalizing, let me steer you toward the best story I've read on this topic in a while, by my colleague Michael Schneider. Bottom line from my POV: It can't hurt to let your passion be known to the network and/or to advertisers in whatever form — although sending tchotchkes seems to be out of vogue — but fan campaigns have limited effect if the show doesn't somehow pull its weight or otherwise make sense economically. Still, with Fringe more than most shows in its situation, I wouldn't lose hope.

“No one can be certain exactly what they’re capable of.”

As I work my way though a complete Alias re-watch, and as I’m considering a Lost re-watch for this summer, I keep puzzling over the emphasis on parent/child relationships in JJ Abrams shows (even ones, like Fringe, that he’s not very involved in). One of the great strengths of Fringe—an area where it outshines Lost and even, a little bit, Alias—is its examination of parent/child conflicts from both sides of the relationship. FRINGE: Now That Olivia Remembers Peter and Her Timeline, Is Walter Next? Josh Jackson Weighs In
April 12, 2012 by Marisa Roffman

Most fans of FRINGE’s Peter and Olivia were thrilled when she finally remembered her life from our original timeline (and Peter got confirmation he had been home all along), but there has been one key thing that has been missing — Walter’s memories.

True, Walter and Peter had a lovely moment in “Nothing As It Seems,” but it’s still not the relationship we spent three seasons growing to love. So when I sat down with Josh Jackson (Peter) on the FRINGE set last week, I asked him whether his character would now be trying to get his father to remember his past now that Olivia has finally “returned” to the right state of mind.

Fringe Observiews 4.17 Everything In Its Place

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

Screen caps from this episode are taken from fringefiles.com. Dialog is from fringepedia.net/transcripts.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…

This is a plaque I have in my Fringe case and it is what I thought of and looked at when Alt-Lincoln said (4.17 Everything In Its Place):
“Maybe it's free will. I don't buy that we're all just defined by our circumstances. Maybe I just made a choice to become the man I wanted to be.”

Which Sci-Fi Series Would You Save: Alcatraz, Awake, Fringe or Sanctuary?

Which Sci-Fi Series Would You Save: Alcatraz, Awake, Fringe or Sanctuary?
By Michael Simpson, April 1, 2012 in Features

Is Sanctuary still open for business?

Last week Terra Nova became the latest sci-fi series to be confined to network television’s archives. Netflix passed on the opportunity to breathe life into the expensive dinosaur adventure that FOX dropped from its schedule after one season.

Recently we’ve also seen the first, and possibly last, season finale of Alcatraz, the latest promising fantasy mystery to walk the way of Lost. Even having J.J. Abrams’ name among the credits is no guarantee that it will return. Given its less than stellar ratings, this series may also be condemned to the inescapable prison of TV history with many questions unresolved.

It’s not alone. FOX loves Fringe but that might not be enough to save it from another season of viewing figures that don’t do justice to possibly the smartest sci-fi show on television. Meanwhile Awake hasn’t generated the kind of excitement that can earn a renewal even when ratings are in a slumber.

Fringe fans, voting is still open for this poll! Fringe is currently in the lead.

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign For 418, "The Consultant"-AcrossTheUniverse

      Email Post       4/12/2012 09:24:00 AM

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign For 418, "The Consultant"-AcrossTheUniverse
The last Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign, sponsored by Fringenuity on April 6th was quite successful.
Thanks to Fox Broadcasting's help, the entire episode aired with the Fringenuity hash tag "Face Yourself" on the screen instead of #Fringe, for the third time in the show's history!

There are lots of awesome statistics that emerged from this event, read more here.

The group, Fringenuity, hosts the Friday night Twitter/GetGlue campaigns.
Fringe Television is proud to support Fringenuity's efforts to promote "Fringe" in as many social media venues as possible, and asks for your help.

Tomorrow night we want to continue our social media domination, and the Fringedom wants to try to get the hash tag #AcrossTheUniverse to trend on Twitter starting at 8PM Eastern.

Last Friday's event catapaulted Fringe in multiple social media platforms, and we need to keep Fringe visible in these platforms in the weeks ahead, especially with the ongoing FOX/Warner Brothers negotiaions for a Season 5.

Please consider joining in tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern and 8PM Pacific to support your favorite show by signing into Twitter and using the #AcrossTheUniverse hash tag.

If you are not familiar with Twitter, you can create an new account rather painlessly at http://www.twitter.com/.

For more information on this week's special Fringe Twitter event visit the Fringenuity website here.

You can also adopt a special icon from 6(!) lovely sets, and/or 1 lovely banner for this event by clicking here.

An important reminder: Please do not tweet with the #AcrossTheUniverse hash tag until 8PM Eastern, to increase the likelihood of trending!

For the last 2 Friday nights we made Fringe the #1 checked in show on GetGlue!

You can also look up Fringe's sponsors on GetGlue, check-in to them, ie. Nissan Leaf, Sprint, etc., and thank them for supporting Fringe.

Your efforts will not go unrewarded, and may help increase our chances of getting a Season 5.

Fringedom, the time is now! If you want your Season 5, Watch "The Consultant" LIVE tomorrow night, and join in this Twitter/GetGlue event!

Make sure FOX Broadcasting and the Fringe sponsors know that you want another season of FRINGE!!

“That’s the difference between us.”

In “Neither Here Nor There,” Olivia said, “I know what it’s like to have a hole in my life. It’s been there as long as I can remember.” That hole is now fixed, as Olivia has rediscovered herself and Peter along with it. But without that hole, Olivia can no longer connect with Lincoln Tyrone Lee. They don’t share the same language of loneliness anymore, and Olivia doesn’t even remember that she used to speak it.

LA Times: Split-Screening Fringe

      Email Post       4/06/2012 11:11:00 AM

The LA Times has an interesting (albeit short) article about the television habits of tablet and smartphone users. According to Nielsen, 88% of them tap their devices during TV time at least once a month, 45% supplement the TV screen daily, and 25% do it several times a day.

There is also a specific shout out to Fringe:
Some shows invite smart-screen surfing to supplement their content. "Fringe" fans, for instance, know to check FringePedia while watching the show to decipher the code in the glyphs in the pre-commercial slate or figure out when they missed an Observer appearance in that episode.
Hopefully everyone here participates in the weekly Twitter and GetGlue campaigns organized by Fringenuity.

Don't forget you can find all the glyph codes and observer appearances here as well!

Do you use your tablet/smartphone/computer during Fringe?
