Fringe Discuss: Is This Peter's Olivia, or not?

      Email Post       2/29/2012 09:16:00 AM

Not Penny's Boat

It's the first Wednesday during our new little winter hiatus, and a great time for a new installment
of Fringe Discuss, where we throw out a question to get your feedback.

There's been a lot of internet chatter since the last scene of episode 4.04, titled "Subject 9," when
Peter addresses his relief at Olivia Dunham's arrival to his hospital room and Olivia ends the episode
by asking Peter "Who are you?"

We learn that the current Olivia says she's only known Peter for 3 months, yet she has so many memories in 'The End Of All Things" of our Olivia in the Old Timeline.

When Peter has the opportunity in "The End Of All Things" to share consciousness with September, September asks Peter to do something for him, but Peter answers:

PETER: I'm not doing anything till you tell me where to find Olivia--

THE OBSERVER: For that, you have only to go home.

If you've watched 4.14 you know Peter takes that literally and goes back to his house, and that event leads him back to Olivia and Nina being held captive by David Robert Jones.

So this week's question is: The current Olivia Dunham we've seen in episode 4.14, is this Peter's Olivia, or not?

Please feel free to post your thoughts and theories below.
Remember, SPOILERS ARE NOT PERMITTED HERE. If you wish to post and/or discuss spoilers
please click on the "Fringe Spoilers" tab at the top of the page.

We look forward to reading all your theories on this one!

Is this Olivia "Peter's Olivia"?

“Maybe you could tell me a story.”

Once upon a time, I was friends with a good storyteller. A good storyteller, but a bad ender. Whether it was the time he and a gang of bikers rescued an abused young woman, or the one about the guy, the banana, and the French bulldog, each of his stories ended the same way: “So that happened.”

Introducing "Fringenuity"-How We Can Help Get A Season 5

      Email Post       2/24/2012 01:36:00 PM

You may have noticed a lot of posts here at Fringe Television since Fringe started airing again in January, regarding Fringe Twitter and GetGlue weekly campaigns.

How did these get started, and what purpose do they serve?

I had the pleasure of asking some of the folks from "Fringenuity" those questions:

Q: What is "Fringenuity," and how did you get started?

Annie:

Fringenuity is the term we came up with to describe this sort of Fringe fan “hive mind” (*giggle*) that exists on Twitter. Fringe is such an exceptional show – its fans are exceptional people. They're smart, motivated, and extremely passionate, and they've spent the last couple of years evolving into this community that feels like a giant international family. Part of the bond is that many of us have worked to promote Fringe for a long time, but it was more loosely organized.

'Fringe' Producers Talk Olivia and Peter's New Connection, David Robert Jones and What's Next (Q&A)

'Fringe' Producers Talk Olivia and Peter's New Connection, David Robert Jones and What's Next (Q&A)

Executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman say episode 15 "is a culmination of all emotional roads" and tease that Olivia's (possible) death is "a major part" of where the season is going.

"Fringe"

[Warning: Some spoilers.]
[fringeobsessed note:even though it says "some spoilers" there's nothing here a Fringie who saw last week's "A Better Human Being" couldn't deduce. So if you saw episode 413, feel free to read on!]

Last week's Fringe ended with a surprising reveal, but in true fashion, only introduced more questions.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman revisited last week's game-changing episode, "A Better Human Being"; previewed Friday's pivotal hour; and answered (more like clarified) a few burning inquiries -- addressing the fates of Olivia, Peter and David Robert Jones' big move.

The Hollywood Reporter: There are some viewers who believed at the beginning that Fringe was in a completely new timeline, but in recent weeks, that theory has been debunked. Fair to say?
Jeff Pinkner: It's funny because we said that in the beginning. We said that we declared the truth both onscreen and in every interview but people were sort of unwilling to. It's a fascinating study in psychology in how people receive stories. They're just sort of unwilling to accept the answer on its face, partly because emotionally they didn't want to accept it and partly because they're trying to guess what the reversal is.
Joel Wyman: We're both such huge fans of television, we said never in a million years would we do the old, "Oh my gosh, i woke up and everything was a dream." Man, I would throw my remote at the TV screen too. So we would never do that.

THR: Now that we know there are two Nina Sharps in our midst. Will the "how" be uncovered?
Pinkner: Without answering it directly, if it were a shape shifter, someone would have to die. So you can't have two Ninas if one of them is a shape shifter. It's part of the mystery, but at the same time, we've established that David Robert Jones can pretty much cross over pretty much at will now.

THR: Since Peter is certain this Olivia is his Olivia -- and then she disappeared -- what does this mean for the two of them?
Wyman: Another thing we've said is that no good decent life story is worth telling without a lot of different twists and turns in the road. Jeff and I are both romantics; we both believe in the notion of love and the strength of love. We've been saying since that since the beginning that we both believe Olivia and Peter are destined for each other. Episode 4x15 [airing March 23] is a culmination of all emotional roads and I think it'll be very satisfying for people who have been with the show since the beginning.

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 414, "TheEndOfAllThings"-LoveIsTheAnswer

      Email Post       2/23/2012 08:52:00 AM

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 414, "TheEndOfAllThings"-LoveIsTheAnswer

Last Friday's Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign, sponsored by Fringenuity, was quite successful.
Fringe Television is proud to support Fringenuity's efforts to promote "Fringe" in as many social media venues as possible, and asks for your help.

Thanks to the wonderful Ari Margolis, who linked last week's post to the official FRINGE Facebook page, there were more than 6000 views.
#BeABetterMan hit Worldwide trends within 12 minutes and stayed there through the start of the show, trending for a total of an hour if not more. Following closely on the heels of Worldwide trending, #BeABetterMan showed up on the US trending topics and stayed there for well over 40 minutes as it was picked up by and propagated by non-Fringies. And, the hash tag stayed fixed in trending topics for most of the next DAY in Vancouver!
Tomorrow night we want to continue our social media domination, and the Fringedom wants to try to get the hash tag #LoveIsTheAnswer to trend on Twitter starting at 8PM Eastern. Please note the start time to tweet is 1 hour LATER than previously, in an effort to increase our chances of trending. That's 1 hour before the new episode airs, and then again at 8PM Pacific time.

Why keep tweeting? Because we know that ratings isn't just about Nielsen boxes anymore. TV networks and their contractors pay attention to which TV shows are 'socially-active' and our show Fringe is very socially-active on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other venues.

Why continue this effort? Last Friday's event catapaulted Fringe in multiple social media platforms, and we need to keep Fringe visible in these platforms in the weeks ahead, especially with the ongoing FOX/Warner Brothers negotiaions for a Season 5.

Please consider joining in tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern and 8PM Pacific to support your favorite show by signing into Twitter and using the #LoveIsTheAnswer hash tag.

If you are not familiar with Twitter, you can create an new account rather painlessly at http://www.twitter.com/.

For more information on this week's special Fringe Twitter event click here(scroll down to "FRINGE February 24th – Love is the answer" post).

You can also adopt special icons, brandy new Twitter skins(Ooh!), and event wallpaper for this event by clicking here.

Just a reminder: Please do not tweet with the #LoveIsTheAnswer hash tag until 8PM Eastern, to increase the likelihood of trending! And volume helps, so tweet slowly, and tweet often after the start time Friday night!

Let's dominate Twitter Friday night, and make our hash tag and our show trend!

***ButWait! There's more!***

Another social network platform that needs our attention on Friday nights is GetGlue.com.
If you are not familiar with getglue.com it is a very clever advertising site married to social networking.
GetGlue merges fans with their interests, and their interests' sponsors.

If you have a GetGlue account you can "check-in" to Fringe. The shows that get the most check-ins are highly visible to the networks and the show's sponsors.

It is recommended you start checking into GetGlue closer to the start time of Fringe to increase the chance of trending there.

You can also look up Fringe's sponsors on GetGlue, check-in to them, ie. Nissan Leaf, Sprint, etc., and thank them for supporting Fringe. Think it doesn't make a difference? Guess again.
For the last few weeks, due to our GetClue check-ins, the Nissan Leaf was one of the most checked-in sponsors on the site.
Let’s make it a combined effort to not only check-in to the show, but to also check-in to the show’s advertisers and comment, “Thank You for your support of Fringe! @FringeOnFox”

If you don’t have a Getglue account, make one! You can post your check-ins to Twitter and/or Facebook.
The more activity, the better, as this may also get other Fringies involved in the GetGlue check-ins.

GetGlue also has convenient mobile phone aps for iphone, Android, and Blackberry.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Please, enjoy the new episode tomorrow night, and support high visibility of your show by tweeting on Twitter with the special hash tag, and checking into Fringe at getglue.com and thanking at least 1 of Friday night's many sponsors. Your efforts will not go unrewarded, and may help increase our chances of getting a Season 5.

Fandom, the time is now! If you want your Season 5, Watch "The End Of All Things" LIVE tomorrow night, and join in this Twitter/GetGlue event!
Make sure FOX Broadcasting and the Fringe sponsors know that you want another season of FRINGE!!

“I remember everything.”

There are two ways to approach this episode: as a vital part of the overarching mythology of Fringe and a turning point in the more controversial aspects of this season’s story that happens to have a freak-of-the-week, or as a freak-of-the-week that happens to contain a few short minutes of vitally important material. How satisfying you found this episode likely depends on your perspective.

'Fringe' to return for shorter fifth and final season?
Published Wednesday, Feb 22 2012, 12:23pm EST
By Morgan Jeffery
Fringe could be renewed for a fifth and final season, reports suggest.

It is possible that the sci-fi drama will return to Fox for a shorter run, composed of just 15 episodes, according to TVLine.

The current fourth season of Fringe has seen the show struggle in the ratings, with midseason premiere 'Back to Where You've Never Been' pulling in just 2.87m viewers.

Last week's (February 17) installment 'A Better Human Being' rose slightly to 3m.

Series star Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop) recently hinted that the series could continue "off network" if Fox declines to recommission it.

"I think there's a possibility that if people just watched the show on the day and date, and if the numbers came back, [renewal] is a possibility [on Fox]," he said. "[But] the TV landscape is a different place than it used to be, so [cancellation on Fox] might not be death."

Fringe continues on Fridays at 9/8c on Fox. Sky1 airs the show on Wednesdays at 10pm in the UK.

Fringe Observiews 4.13 A Better Human Being

      Email Post       2/21/2012 12:47:00 PM

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

Screen caps from this episode are taken from fringefiles.com. Dialog is from fringepedia.net/transcripts.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…

3.09 Marionette
WALTER: “Do you think possibly they replaced her with a robot?”

That line had been stuck in my head since 4.09 Enemy Of My Enemy and I’m not sure why. There is no evidence that Olivia has been replaced by a shapeshifter but…

Fringe Poll: Alt-Nina or Shape-Shifter Nina?

      Email Post       2/21/2012 10:43:00 AM

At the end of the Fringe episode "A Better Human Being", Nina is caught in a lie, then it is revealed that there is another Nina tied-up somewhere else with the abducted Olivia.

Since we already know that Alt Brandon in the new Red universe was revealed to be a shape shifter, it's possible that one of these Ninas is also a shape shifter - meaning that Massive Dynamic was compromised at very high levels in both universes.

Normally a shape-shifter kills their victim when they assume their identity, but we see that there is another, bound Nina still alive. This could mean either that these Next Generation shape-shifters don't need to kill their victims, or the scarier possibility that both Ninas are shape shifters!

However, there is another possibility, that they are both "real" Ninas, and the fake Nina (Nin-not?) is the Alt-Nina from the Red Universe.

I came up with seven possible combinations - what do you think is going on?

What do you think is going on with Massive Dynamic Nina and the tied-up Nina?

Shipper Nation: A Valentine's Day treat for 'Fringe' lovers and a salute to TV's most romantic, creative (and arguably strangest) fans-by Jeff Jensen

      Email Post       2/17/2012 08:59:00 AM

Shipper Nation: A Valentine's Day treat for 'Fringe' lovers and a salute to TV's most romantic, creative (and arguably strangest) fans
by Jeff Jensen
Last Friday, Fringe fans were treated to an instant-classic installment of the Fox sci-fi series, one that significantly advanced the season’s defining storyline: Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) — marooned in a new rendering of history in which he has not existed since he was a child – trying to return home to his own timeline. Yet for one particular, peculiar subset of loyal Fringe viewers, “Welcome to Westfield” was nothing short of an early Valentine’s Day gift. They’re the fans for whom the dream sequence spectacle of Peter and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) making love was a dream come true. They’re the fans that got goosebumps when Olivia planted a kiss on Peter, as if this “reboot” version of his ladylove had suddenly reverted back to the original iteration of her. They’re fans known as ‘shippers, and if you’re a Web-chatty TV watcher or pop culture aficionado who tends to fixate on romantic relationships in your favorite fiction or fantasize about the mere possibility of amorous activity between your favorite make-believe people, then you’re probably one of them.

In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, we explore how the shipper phenomenon — which began with The X-Files and until recently has been more associated with sci-fi and fantasy fandom — has gone mainstream and how shippers themselves can impact the creative process. An added bonus for Fringe fans: Exec producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman tell EW that an episode scheduled to air next month, entitled “A Short Story About Love,” will be a shipper milestone. “We’ve always said that no great love story is worth telling unless it’s a twisty, long road,” says Wyman of a season that has left some Peter/Olivia shippers frustrated because the story has essentially kept the pair — or at least, the versions of the characters who love each other — heartbreakingly apart. Adds Pinkner: “You have to have a setback before you have a victory, otherwise the storytelling becomes flat and boring.” Wyman adds that “A Short Story About Love” should be “the be-all and end-all in terms of people’s expectations of the Peter/Olivia relationship.”

Who are shippers? They’re people like Gillian Bromfield, a Fringe fan from the United Kingdom who’s been invested in the growing rapport between Olivia (her favorite character) and Peter since the pilot. She expresses her affection by producing music videos and posting shippy clips about the couple on her Fringe-dedicated YouTube channel. “The episode that took me headfirst into shipper territory was ‘The Cure.’ [The sixth episode from season 1.] The scene at the end when Olivia speaks to Peter outside the hotel just had me squealing with delight,” writes Bromfield in an e-mail interview. “What do I like about them as a couple? Well, I see them as two damaged people that come to respect and love each other, and the deeper the mythology of the show goes, the more it appears they were always destined to be together.”

Shipper Nation is a varied, dynamic, sometimes combative community whose members desire romance from — or project romance onto — almost any kind of pop culture pairing, from Stefan and Elena (or Damon and Elena) on The Vampire Diaries, to Liz and Jack on 30 Rock, to Simon and Paula on The X-Factor, to even Harry Potter and Little Red Riding Hood on Once Upon a Time. (Okay, we made that last one up, although “crossover” shipping — coupling characters from different fictions — is very common.)

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 413, "A Better Human Being"-BeABetterMan

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 413, "A Better Human Being"-BeABetterMan

Last Friday's Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign, sponsored by Fringenuity, was quite successful.
Fringe Television is proud to support Fringenuity's efforts to promote "Fringe" in as many social media venues as possible, and asks for your help.
Thanks to the wonderful Ari Margolis who linked last week's post to the FringeOnFOX site,
there were 3 times as many Twitter Fringe participants! By the 15th minute of the event, the hash tag #BreakingOut reached the Worlwide trending topics, earning the #2 (non-promoted) spot and holding it for over 20 minutes.

Tomorrow night we want to continue our social media domination, and the Fringedom wants to try to get the hash tag #BeABetterMan  to trend on Twitter starting at 8PM Eastern.

Please consider joining in tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern and 8PM Pacific to support your favorite show by signing into Twitter and using the #BeABetterMan hash tag.

If you are not familiar with Twitter, you can create an new account rather painlessly at http://www.twitter.com/.

For more information on this week's special Fringe Twitter event click here.

You can also adopt special icons for this event by clicking here.

Just a reminder: Please do not tweet with the #BeABetterMan hash tag until 8PM Eastern, to increase the likelihood of trending!

Last week due to our GetClue check-ins, the Nissan Leaf was one of the most checked-in sponsors on the site.

Let’s make it a combined effort to not only check-in to the show, but to also check-in to the show’s advertisers and comment, “Thank You for your support of Fringe! @FringeOnFox”

If you don’t have a Getglue account, get one! You can post your check-ins to Twitter or Facebook.

Go FRINGE!

“You folks lost?”
“Not that I’m aware of.”

This is an episode that could have gone either way: horribly disappointing or deeply satisfying. Standalones and trapped-in-a-town narratives can provide a welcome relief from an overarching mythology, or a frustrating sense that the writers are dragging their feet. Somehow, “Welcome to Westfield” didn’t have either of those results at all: the standalone elements were so evocative of so many other episodes, and the final surprise was so darn exciting that the relief I felt wasn’t at the break from the mythos, but at the sense that we are finally, finally getting somewhere.

FRINGE: Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman Tease the ‘Mind-Bending’ ‘Welcome to Westfield,’ Olivia’s Fate, the Lincoln-Olivia-Peter Triangle, Their Fans and More

February 9, 2012 by Marisa Roffman

It’s hard to talk about Friday’s brand new episode of FRINGE, “Welcome to Westfield,” without spoiling too much, but at risk of over-hyping the hour, it’s safe to say it’s good. As in, canIhavethenextepisoderightnowplease?, good.

But again, at the risk of spoiling too much, I probably shouldn’t say much more.

Thankfully, FRINGE executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman were willing to tease a little bit about what viewers can expect from the hour, as well as just how dire September’s prediction for Olivia really was, Peter-Olivia-Lincoln, their awesome fans, and more…

The description for “Welcome to Westfield” — Peter, Olivia, and Walter get trapped together — is very interesting. Is it a bottle episode of sorts?
J.H. Wyman: No, no bottle episodes, but I think that one is going to go over really well. I really believe people are going to love that one.

Is there anything you can tease about it, specifically?
JW: It’s a fantastic episode, really mind-bending in the best FRINGE-ian kind of way. It’s going to answer a lot of mythological questions. It’s going to answer one very large mythological question, which we believe is of paramount importance, the answer to that question. It’s a big one as far as stakes are concerned.

Very interesting. You guys teased that answers are going to be coming in waves over the next few episodes. Is that going to come partially in the return of September?
Jeff Pinkner: September’s a piece of the puzzle, for sure.

Are we going to be finding out a little bit more about how he got shot and whether it was due to his actions in the season premiere?
JP: Without spoiling it, obviously the questions that are on your mind are the questions on everyone’s minds and we’re going to answer those questions and others and pose new ones. Hopefully like we always do.

Well, we did have his warning to Olivia that she had to die. Now, that sounds dire –
JP: It is!

But if you really think about it, everybody has to die eventually. Are we reading too much into this where he wants her to live forever, or is this a morbid thing where the message is, “You’re going to die soon.”
JW: The Observers, don’t forget, they’ve already experienced the future. It’s not an issue of him wanting her to live forever; he knows…there’s something tragic in the mail for her.
JP: It’s not like he’s saying, “Hey, you’ve got to age.”

That’s true. She just does not have the best luck. Everyone keeps wanting her dead or thinking she’s going to die.
JP: She’s a hero.

Yeah. Poor girl.
JW: She said as much [in last season's "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide"]: ” I saw the man who is going to kill me.” So these things might be connected.

Would those two things still be connected in the new timeline?
JW: That’s what’s really interesting — fate and destiny and things like that, they cross timelines, they cross who knows, right?

Okay, then I have a super-nerdy question: If this man is destined to kill her, why did Walternate kill her in the future Peter saw?
JW: That’s another time.
JP: That future will never happen. What Peter did at the end of last season –
JW: Altered the course of it.
JP: — altered the course of events. Peter’s sacrifice, getting into the machine and ultimately disappearing from the timeline, was specifically to avoid that future.
JW: Don’t forget, there’s many different possibilities of the future, many different versions. So one of them, maybe Walternate kills her, in another one, maybe the guy from the Zeppelin kills her, in another one, she can get hit by a car, and in another one, she can miss that car, in other, she can pull a gun and shoot Walternate — there’s all kinds of different versions. It’s precarious.

Speaking of precarious, there’s this weird triangle forming with Peter, Olivia, and Lincoln. How is the triangle going to play out in the next batch of episodes?
JW: The struggle is being around someone that [looks like the person you love]…Peter knows what he’s destined for, and it’s not [this Olivia], and that’s difficult for him. She’s there and she’s serving as a painful reminder every time he sees her of what he’s missing and what’s waiting for him. Biologically and chemistry-wise, she’s the same girl, really, so it’s very difficult.

Him watching another person dealing with her on another level that might be construed as romantic is also hard. So, it’s there for a reason. You’re going to see — that’s what it’s designed for — to show us that, “Wow, I really want to be with her.” And ultimately, you just want him to get his Olivia back. And that’s the whole key. You will watch some painful moments and some beautiful moments and hopefully you’ll be down there with him with his struggle.

Fringe Twitter and GetGlue Campaign for 412, "Welcome To Westfield"-Breaking Out!

Last Friday's Fringe Twitter and GetGlue campaign was quite successful.

“Everything happens right now.”

Fringe’s best episodes always make me think of those paper chains we used to make in grade school, or to decorate a Christmas tree. Each slip of paper makes a closed circle that links to other loops, and the result is a chain that can make on larger circle. Interlocking, in other words, while still distinct.

Double Happiness
There was so many doubles even the props department added one in the background in the form of a lamp. Does that count as an inside joke?

Blu Mankuma portraying Astrid's dad. Wow! Sharp eyed viewers will remember his early role in The X-Files. He appeared in the Season 1 episode of that show, Ghost in the Machine. Ask if you are curious what other significance this has for me.

There's one interesting tie back to 3x23 The Day We Die. I don't know what he does now, but in one possible future, Astrid's father had been a preacher who would often quote, "When the world dies and a savior arrives to end the suffering and usher all the worthy into Heaven."

To be honest, I didn't pay as much attention to the case of the week until the M.I.T. professor mentioned lake house. Everything seems to stem from Reiden Lake doesn't it? Particularly interesting is that September was supposed to be there in 1985, when he did not save Peter.

I can't help but notice that all the cases of the week have been tied back to the overall myth, in season 4. The parallels were definitely strong in this episode. Neil, ruing that he was not his mother's favourite son, endeavours to find a reason to exist.

Alt-Astrid and Astrid's moments can be counted as best of the season.

Then there is Peter. He starts out the episode focused on going home. It wasn't long before he becomes involved with the case and growing ever closer to Olivia's side. He is becoming contradictory. Walter having heard Alt-Astrid's emotional investment argument, and Olivia trusting Peter more and more, will reinforce their bond, while it seems to align with that of the relationship of the old time line. If their paths continue as is, that should prove an interesting destiny.

I cannot believe the observers were oblivious to Peter's presence. Neil's ability would suggest they are all knowing. Looking forward to the next installment.

Additional Thoughts...

I love Bolivia and Walter together. I always knew he liked her, despite all the name calling. It's easy to see she turned up the sass just for him. It makes up for not seeing what must have happened between the two before.

Do you just love Mr. Farnsworth's apron?
