Fringe Episode 220: Northwest Passage

Peter teams up with a local law enforcement official, Sheriff Mathis (guest star Martha Plimpton), on a serial murder investigation with ties to Newton (guest star Sebastian Roché). Meanwhile, Walter copes with the possibility of being sent back to St. Claire’s, and someone from the “other side” pays a visit.

  1. What is the name of the song that Peter was listening to from the cd at the end of the episode?

  4. You're all talking about that instead of geeking out about the reveal at the end of the episode???!!!! Hehe, I kid, I kid. :) But seriously, can't wait for the season finale.

  7. What did Newton say at the end of the episode, before 'Walternate' walked in? Sounded like "Mr. Secretary". Is that what he said?

  9. So I loved the episode, of course, but I don't think I understand exactly what Newton was up to. Why did it take them so long to confront Peter? Why couldn't they have nabbed him at the first motel, rather than just calling his phone?

  10. JimOnAWhim: Yes, he said "Mr. Secretary"

  11. OMFG when Walternate walked out I literally gasped out loud. This opens up a whole new WTF can of worms. I EFFING LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

  12. Why couldn't they have nabbed him at the first motel, rather than just calling his phone?

Because then they'd have nothing to do for the next 40 minutes, silly. :-)

In all seriousness: It probably had something to do with how they were tracking him down and how they traveled. Hopefully it gets explained by the end of the season.

  13. Great show, great ep. Love the fact that apparently "Walternate" is a Secretary. And apparently he controls Newton, and probably the shift changers army and all.

  14. THE END OF THE EPISODE WAS GAY IT RUIENED IT! how there is nothing really left to happen there will just be a gay family conflict. Walternates side has higher and better technology. This sends everything out of perportion and in my opinion totally ruined the show.

  15. James: You're ignorance is appalling, and your lack of grammtical skills certainly explains why you had a problem with this episode.

  16. Yeah, James, I'm not even going to consider your opinion when you leave a post like that.

  18. Mr. Secretary...
    As in Secretary of State....
Walternate is a political mogul now, with science behind him, and power unbridled in his hands.

What happened with the observer this episode?
    didnt see him.

  19. with reference to the bazookajoe comic strip in the show that peter picks up on the bridge.

    checkout http://www.topps.com/candy/brands/bazooka/index.htm

go to comics and scroll to 26/50

the punchline has been changed to "you can't get THERE from HERE" in the show

but you can get HERE from THERE ;)
... not sure what it means yet

theory: Walternate could be the Secretary of Defense...

  21. First, instead of Walternate I prefer Alter.
Second, was the farmer who came at Peter with the hammer working for the other side? I couldn't understand what he blurts out at the end

  22. Confused about the role of the farmer as well. I haven't watched this ep. a second time yet so bear with me. The implication seemed to be that the farmer guy was responsible for the deaths of the 2 girls because he says something like "I just wanted to be near the girls." And the sheriff says something to Peter about helping to catch a killer. So if Walternate & Co. weren't responsible for their deaths why was there a lab and their brain matter removed? Totally confused by that.

  23. Lacking further explanation, I'd have to write the brain-dissection element off as a "temporal" anomaly.

  24. Thank you SOO much for the song info - its been driving me nuts! And in my opinion this just keeps getting better & better. I'm a big fan of J.J. but this show is his best so far. Makes you think, creeps you out, makes you laugh, & makes you care about the characters all at once.... Can't wait for the finale!

  25. As Washingtonians we were really amused by this show because of the fictional county - Noyo County WA doesn't exist. It is apparently a stand-in for Skagit or Whatcom County, based on the (completely real!) names of nearby cities. I'm guessing it's because the show didn't want to/couldn't get permission of an actual county's sherrif's department to use their name and likeness. The detailed (and amusingly typical Western Washingtonian) county logo was a nice touch.

Another fun fact, the TV in the hotel lobby is tuned to Seattle's Fox affiliate Q13 and viewing that station's morning news show.
